By depositing low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) thin-film-transistor backplanes directly onto LED epiwafers - skipping the wafer-bonding step used by most rivals - Lumiode produces ultra-high-brightness, low-power, small-form-factor displays aimed at augmented reality, head-up displays and projection. Spun out of Columbia University in 2012 and led by co-founder and acting CEO Ioannis (John) Kymissis, the company raised roughly $16 million in venture funding before agreeing in December 2025 to be acquired by Taiwan's PlayNitride.
Crystal Sonic is a Phoenix, Arizona deep-tech startup that uses sound to cut semiconductor costs. Its patented Sonic Lift-off (SLO) technology acts as an 'acoustic scalpel,' peeling thin device layers off expensive wafers so the underlying substrate can be reused instead of ground into dust. Legacy manufacturing wastes 90% or more of substrate material, and substrates can account for up to half of a device's cost - Crystal Sonic wants to reclaim that. Spun out of an Arizona State University lab in 2018, the company has won backing from NASA, the Department of Energy, the NSF, and Lam Capital.
Jifei Ou is the founder and CEO of OPT Industries, a Medford, Massachusetts company that turned a decade of MIT Media Lab research into a new kind of factory. After nearly seven years spent learning to 3D-print fur, hair, and micro-textures no mold could produce, Ou built RAMP, described as the world's first roll-to-roll 3D printing system, which prints intricate microstructures by the mile. Rather than sell machines, OPT sells the products it makes on them - false eyelashes, beauty applicators, and diagnostic swabs that outperformed the gold standard during COVID. Ou raised $15M in Series A funding and is betting that reconnecting design and production can bring precision manufacturing back onshore.
Boston Micro Fabrication (BMF) builds 3D printers that work at a scale most machines can't reach - resolutions down to 2 microns with tolerances of about plus or minus 10 microns. Its microArch printers use a proprietary process called Projection Micro Stereolithography (PuSL) to make tiny, complex parts for medical devices, microfluidics, optics, connectors and semiconductor packaging. Founded in 2016 and headquartered in Maynard, Massachusetts, BMF has placed machines with more than 2,000 customers across roughly 35 countries.
John Kawola is a 3D printing industry veteran who has spent nearly three decades turning niche additive-manufacturing technologies into real businesses. He led Z Corporation through the dawn of full-color 3D printing, ran a farm-and-warehouse robotics company, built Ultimaker's North American footprint, and then took the helm of Boston Micro Fabrication (BMF), the company making 3D printers that resolve features down to two microns - smaller than a human hair. In 2025 he handed off the CEO role at BMF to become a strategic advisor.
Rui Jing Jiang is the Founder and CEO of Avisi Technologies, a Redwood City-based clinical-stage medical device company developing VisiPlate, the world's thinnest freestanding ophthalmic implant for treating glaucoma. Built on University of Pennsylvania nanotechnology, VisiPlate is a multichannel aqueous shunt composed of alumina and Parylene-C that is 20 times thinner than a human hair. Rui Jing co-founded the company in 2017 as a junior at Penn's Wharton School, won the $100,000 President's Innovation Prize in 2018, secured FDA Investigational Device Exemption approval in October 2025 for the US SAPPHIRE trial, and closed a $10.7M Series A in February 2026 to advance pivotal clinical development.
