The Story

A display small enough for glasses, bright enough for sunlight

Augmented reality keeps stumbling on the same wall: the screens are too dim, too power-hungry, or too big. Lumiode, a fabless semiconductor company founded in 2012 as a spinout of Columbia University, spent more than a decade attacking that wall at the level of the wafer.

Most microdisplay makers build brightness by assembly - manufacturing an LED layer and a transistor backplane separately, then bonding the two wafers together. Lumiode took a harder route. Its engineers deposit a low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) thin-film-transistor backplane directly onto the LED epiwafer. The result is what the company calls a "truly-monolithic" micro-LED microdisplay: the pixels and the circuitry that drives them grow on one piece of silicon, with no bonding step in between.

The payoff is measured in nits, the unit of luminance. Lumiode has demonstrated prototypes reaching roughly one million nits, with a stated path toward more than ten million. For context, a bright smartphone tops out near one to two thousand. That headroom is exactly what a heads-up display or a pair of AR glasses needs to stay readable against a noon sky.

The company is deliberately small - about five people - and deliberately narrow. It does not run its own fab. It owns the process chemistry and the intellectual property, and it partners with manufacturers to put that process on a production line. In 2024, digital-signage firm STRATACACHE announced it was integrating Lumiode's backplane deposition technology into its emerging micro-LED facility in Eugene, Oregon.

That IP-first strategy shaped the ending. In December 2025, Taiwan's PlayNitride - one of the larger names in micro-LED - agreed to acquire Lumiode for two million dollars in cash, folding the New York company's monolithic playbook into its own. For a deep-tech team that raised roughly sixteen million dollars over its life, the exit was strategic rather than splashy: an acquirer paying for a process, not a product line.
