The Plumber Who Became a Philosopher - How Nick Bonfiglio Keeps Building the Infrastructure Everyone Else Depends On

He was CTO of Lucasfilm when Star Wars was still being digitized. He helped Marketo scale to an Adobe acquisition. He sold his second company before most people could pronounce "product-led growth." Now he's three exits deep into a career spent building the invisible pipes that make SaaS companies run - and he's not done.

There is a class of founder who gets bored solving solved problems. Nick Bonfiglio is not that founder. He has been solving the same problem - how do you get enterprise data to be accurate, consistent, and actually useful - for nearly three decades, at four different companies, across at least three distinct technology eras. If that sounds like stubbornness, it is. The productive kind.

The specific problem that keeps pulling him back is deceptively simple to state: when a company runs on a dozen different software tools, why does customer data look different in every single one? Why does the Salesforce record disagree with the HubSpot record which disagrees with the Zendesk record? Why, after $200,000 in consultant fees and a six-month integration project, does your CFO still not trust the revenue number?

Bonfiglio first ran into this problem at Marketo, where he served as EVP of Global Product from 2009 to 2016. He owned product management, engineering, cloud operations, technical support, and security - essentially, the entire mechanism by which Marketo delivered value to customers. And what he watched, day after day, was revenue teams arguing over whose data was right instead of acting on any of it. Marketing said one thing. Sales said another. Nobody could agree on the source of truth.

"Until you have accurate, trusted data shared across people and systems, you'll have subjective data and biased views. That leads to bad decisions. Full stop."
- Nick Bonfiglio, CEO of Syncari

That frustration seeded what would eventually become Syncari. But first, there was a detour through the dawn of product-led growth.

In 2016, Bonfiglio left Marketo and co-founded Aptrinsic with Mickey Alon. The premise was elegant: SaaS companies were spending fortunes acquiring users through traditional marketing, then doing almost nothing with in-product behavioral data to retain them. Aptrinsic built the tooling to fix that - personalized in-product experiences driven by actual usage signals.

Two years later, Gainsight acquired Aptrinsic. The product lives on today as Gainsight PX. Bonfiglio had co-authored a book on product-led strategy - "Mastering Product Experience in SaaS" - before "PLG" became a standard VC term. He has a habit of naming things before the market does.

Published before "product-led growth" entered the VC lexicon, this book laid out how SaaS companies could use in-product behavioral data to personalize experiences at scale. It functioned as both a manifesto and a product roadmap for what Aptrinsic was building - and became required reading in PLG circles.

After the Gainsight exit, most founders take a breath. Maybe angel investing. Maybe an advisory role or two. Bonfiglio was back at it within months. In July 2019, he co-founded Syncari with Neelesh Shastry, whose engineering chops would backstop the technical ambition of what they were about to attempt: a platform that didn't just integrate data but synchronized it - bidirectionally, in real time, across every system in an enterprise stack.

The distinction matters. Integration moves data from point A to point B. Synchronization keeps every copy of a record consistent, everywhere, always. Syncari's patented multidirectional sync engine transforms and unifies data across your stack using real-time pipelines. When something changes in Salesforce, it propagates correctly to HubSpot, Marketo, Zendesk, and every other tool in the stack - with the business logic applied, not just the raw field value passed along.

The timing turned out to be either genius or stubborn luck, depending on your view of history. In 2019, the problem Syncari was solving was real but niche - a RevOps tooling problem. By 2023, with LLMs suddenly consuming enterprise data at scale, the problem became existential. If your AI agents are trained on or querying data that contradicts itself across systems, you don't have an AI problem. You have a data problem. Bonfiglio had been working on it for years.

The pivot - or rather, the reveal - came with the launch of Agentic MDM. Traditional master data management is a category as old as enterprise software: expensive, slow, often waterfall, and built for a world where data moves in batch processes overnight. Agentic MDM is something different: a continuously updated, governed, AI-ready data layer that AI agents can actually trust as a source of truth.

Bonfiglio's argument is not subtle. He says enterprises will not win the AI era by having the best models. They will win by having the cleanest, most trusted data underneath those models. He frames Syncari not as a data integration tool - a category already crowded with Fivetran, MuleSoft, and a dozen others - but as the governed data foundation that makes everything downstream reliable.

Fortune 1000 companies are listening. In September 2025, Syncari closed a $20 million Series B led by James Scapa, founder and former CEO of Altair, now General Partner at Escape Venture Investing. The round brought total funding to $45.3 million. Revenue grew from $930,000 in 2023 to $1.8 million in 2024, with enterprise momentum continuing to build.

The backstory that most people skip: before any of this, Bonfiglio was CTO of Lucasfilm in the late 1990s - the company responsible for the digital resurrection of the Star Wars universe. Working on the infrastructure that would eventually support Industrial Light and Magic's visual effects pipeline is a strange preparation for a career in enterprise B2B SaaS. But infrastructure is infrastructure, whether you're rendering lightsabers or synchronizing CRM records. You have to get the plumbing right before the magic happens.

"The enterprises winning the next decade will not be the ones with the most AI models. They will be the ones with the strongest, most governed data foundations underneath them."
- Nick Bonfiglio, Series B announcement, September 2025

What makes Bonfiglio unusual among enterprise software founders is that he operates with genuine patience about category timing. He built tools for RevOps before RevOps was a hiring category. He built product experience tooling before PLG was a VC thesis. He built multi-directional data sync before AI made data quality a boardroom conversation. Each time, the category eventually caught up.

He is, in a sense, the anti-hype founder. His thesis on AI data readiness does not involve a flashy demo or a chat interface. It involves unglamorous work: establishing schema-aware connectors, applying governance policies, detecting data trust issues and lineage violations before they propagate, building the elastic data model that lets enterprises add new systems without breaking the contracts between existing ones.

The Syncari platform now processes more than two trillion data operations - roughly 285,000 for every living person on Earth. That number does not appear in a press release headline. It appears in the quiet confidence of an engineer who knows what the pipes are carrying.

His career is not a straight line. It is more like a braid - three threads running in parallel, each reinforcing the others. The operator thread (Marketo, Lucasfilm, Ciena, CollabNet). The founder thread (Aptrinsic, Syncari). The thought-leader thread (the book, the category definitions, the public writing on RevOps and data governance). He does not treat any of these as separate. The book informed the product. The operator experience informed the go-to-market. The founding informed the writing.

If you ask him what he is actually building toward, he answers in systems language, not founder mythology. He wants Syncari to be the data backbone that Fortune 1000 companies rely on as they deploy AI agents across their operations - not the agent, not the model, but the substrate. The thing that makes the agents trustworthy. The thing that makes the data not lie.

It is a modest ambition, in the sense that it does not require anyone to believe in magic. It just requires the plumbing to work.
