DelightChat Wants to Be the Gmail of Ecommerce Support

A two-person Shopify plugin grew into an omnichannel helpdesk built for lean D2C brands, betting that customer support on WhatsApp can be both powerful and simple. Founders Preetam Nath and Sankalp Jonna bootstrapped their way to real revenue before taking a single institutional check.

Most software gets heavier as it gets more capable. Add a feature, add a menu. Add an integration, add a settings tab. DelightChat's founders looked at that trade and decided they did not want it. Their pitch, written on their own about page, is almost stubborn in its simplicity: build something as powerful as Intercom or Freshdesk, but as easy to use as Gmail or WhatsApp. Two reference points that usually live at opposite ends of a spectrum, pulled into the same sentence.

DelightChat is an omnichannel customer support and WhatsApp marketing platform aimed squarely at small and mid-sized direct-to-consumer brands. It pulls conversations from WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook Messenger, email and live chat into one shared inbox, then adds the official WhatsApp Business API on top so a brand can run broadcasts, recover abandoned carts and confirm cash-on-delivery orders from the same screen the support team already lives in. The target customer is not the enterprise with a support org chart. It is the Shopify store run by three people who are drowning in DMs.

A plugin that got too popular to ignore

The story does not start with DelightChat. It starts with SuperLemon. Preetam Nath and Sankalp Jonna met in 2016 and spent the next few years trading startup ideas and helping each other ship. Neither came from a family of founders. In Sankalp's case, running a business was closer to taboo - family lore held that his great-grandfather had been cheated out of a travel business by a partner. Entrepreneurship was the road you were warned about, not the one you were pointed toward.

They built SuperLemon anyway: a WhatsApp plugin for Shopify stores. It worked. The app spread to more than 20,000 shops across 50-plus countries and became the highest-rated tool in its category, all run by a team of two, with Sankalp as the only engineer. That is a rare thing - a piece of software used on five continents and maintained by fewer people than most startups put in a single standup.

"World-class software that is powerful and in-depth, think Intercom or Freshdesk, yet simple to use, think Gmail or WhatsApp." — DelightChat, on the product it set out to build

But running SuperLemon showed them a bigger, uglier problem sitting underneath the plugin. Ecommerce brands did not just want a WhatsApp button. They wanted to actually handle the flood of customer conversations that button unleashed - across every channel, without paying enterprise prices for tools built for companies ten times their size. So the founders did the counterintuitive thing. They stepped back from a hit product to build the harder platform beneath it. DelightChat was born around 2020.

The unglamorous market nobody wanted

Here is the insight worth stealing. Most support software is priced and designed to punish small brands. Seat-based billing gets expensive the moment you grow. Setup assumes an IT team. Features assume a workflow the corner store does not have. The enterprise end of the market is crowded with well-funded names - Freshworks, Sprinklr, Intercom. The small end was underserved not because it was small, but because it was unglamorous.

DelightChat planted its flag there on purpose. Its own description of the mission is unusually specific: the best customer support tool for small and medium D2C and ecommerce brands running lean teams. Not "for everyone." Not "for teams of any size." For the store doing its first few thousand dollars in daily sales, run by people who answer support tickets between packing orders.

Revenue
BROADCASTS · CART RECOVERY

That focus shows up in the product decisions. The WhatsApp Business API is offered officially, green-tick verification included - a trust signal small brands usually cannot get on their own. Broadcasts go to segmented audiences. Abandoned carts trigger recovery messages. Cash-on-delivery orders get confirmed automatically, which in markets where COD fraud is real, quietly saves money. The through-line is that support stops being purely a cost center and starts pulling its weight as a revenue channel.

The numbers, and the patience behind them

DelightChat grew the boring way, which is to say the durable way. It crossed roughly $30,000 in monthly recurring revenue as a lean micro-SaaS before raising a rupee of institutional money. When the seed round did come, in 2021, it was small and led by Gemba Capital, with First Cheque and a handful of angels alongside - reported at under $100K. This is not a company that raised a big round and went looking for a problem. It found the problem, charged for the solution, and only then took outside capital.

By 2025, third-party trackers put DelightChat at around $1.8M in annual recurring revenue. Modest by venture standards, meaningful by the standard the founders actually care about: revenue that belongs to them and to their customers, not to a growth chart drawn for the next round. The 4.9-star rating across 200-plus reviews is the tell. Ratings like that do not come from marketing. They come from a small team answering support as if their names are on the door, because they are.

Where DelightChat sits among the alternatives
DelightChat
D2C-native, simple
WATI
WhatsApp-first
Chatwoot
open-source, technical
Freshworks
enterprise scale
Sprinklr
enterprise CXM

Bars indicate relative positioning by scale and audience, not market share. Longer = larger/more enterprise-oriented.

The competitive set is instructive. WATI goes deep on WhatsApp-only engagement. Chatwoot is open-source and courts technical teams who want to self-host. Freshworks and Sprinklr are aimed at big companies with big budgets. Olark and Acquire come at live chat from the web-widget side. Against all of them, DelightChat's advantage is not a longer feature list. It is knowing exactly who it is for - and refusing to be for anyone else.

Values you can actually see

Plenty of companies list values on a careers page. DelightChat's four - customer obsession, kindness, simplicity, education - are unusual mainly because you can point to where each one shows up in the product. Simplicity is the whole design thesis. Education is the steady stream of comparison guides and how-tos the company publishes, some of it openly pointing customers toward the right tool even when that tool is a competitor. Kindness and customer obsession are what a 4.9 rating looks like when you decode it.

The best support does not feel like a ticketing system. It feels like texting someone who happens to run the shop. — The idea DelightChat is built around

There is a third founder now, too. Bharath S Chordia joined Preetam and Sankalp as co-founder and head of sales, turning the original engineering duo into a small commercial team. The shape of the company still reflects its origins: lean, deliberate, allergic to bloat. It is the SuperLemon operating philosophy applied to a bigger surface area.

What you can take from it

Strip away the specifics and DelightChat is a playbook you can run. Find a marketplace with a partner program - here, Shopify. Ship something small and genuinely loved. Listen to the deeper pain your small thing exposes. Then build the platform underneath it, charge for it early, and let real revenue - not a pitch deck - tell you whether you are right. The founders did each step in public, and the steps are legible enough to copy.

The bigger lesson is about focus as a moat. In a category with better-funded competitors on every side, a two-person team carved out durable ground by serving the customer everyone else found too small to bother with, and by refusing to make the product heavier to chase the customer everyone else wanted. Whether "the Gmail of ecommerce support" is a slogan or a destination, the bet underneath it is clear: simple and powerful do not have to be opposites, and the brand that proves it gets to keep the small businesses as they grow up.
