Seven Companies In.
Still Building.

Jack Porter is running Cognizer, a Pleasanton-based startup that wants to make legal contracts as easy to query as a Google search. The pitch: upload your contracts, and a knowledge graph built on graph neural networks and large language models surfaces the answers in plain English - no lawyer required for the first pass.

It's a problem Porter has been circling for years. Before Cognizer, he ran RazorThink, an AI company that put him in rooms with enterprise teams who had mountains of unstructured data and no good way to extract intelligence from it. Before that, he built analytics platforms for pharmaceutical giants - Merck, GlaxoSmithKline - at a time when most enterprise software teams were still arguing about relational databases. He learned early that the harder problem isn't building the AI. It's building the AI that enterprise teams will actually trust.

Cognizer's Genius platform extracts over 1,000 contract terms and clauses with an average 97% accuracy rate. It reads PDFs, Word documents, and Google Docs, connects to existing document management systems, and organizes everything into what Cognizer calls a Contract Knowledge Graph - a semantic network that surfaces relationships between contracts, parties, clauses, and obligations that would take a paralegal team weeks to map manually.

The company spent two full years (2019-2021) building the NLP platform before taking an enterprise customer. That's a deliberate choice in an industry where everyone rushes to revenue. Porter has been through enough funding cycles to know the difference between product-market fit and product-market hope.

Pharma. Finance. Legal. AI Runs Through All of It.

Porter's career reads like a tour through every major wave of enterprise computing. He was building AI for pharma companies when machine learning was still an academic exercise. He was building social networks for pharmaceutical executives - Executive Mindshare - before LinkedIn existed. He ran an analytics firm (DecisionView Software) that was acquired by IMS Health in 2010, one of the largest health data companies in the world.

Between 2015 and 2017, he ran RazorThink, where he gave a four-part interview series to entrepreneur and VC Sramana Mitra that sketched out his thinking on artificial intelligence in enterprise settings. The conversations are worth reading for anyone trying to understand how his worldview shaped Cognizer: his conviction that AI needs to be domain-specific, his skepticism of one-size-fits-all models, and his belief that the real unlock is not the algorithm but the organizational structure around it.

When he founded Cognizer in 2018 with co-founder Soundararajan Velu, he picked contracts as the beachhead. Not because legal tech was crowded with venture money at the time, but because contracts are the connective tissue of every enterprise relationship - and nobody had built AI that could actually read them at scale.

The company maintains research labs in Bangalore and Hyderabad, India, where its data science team is led by Vineeth T M and research director Shikha Agrawal. The distributed model reflects Porter's long experience with global technology development.

What Makes Porter Different

His LinkedIn handle is @hightechexec - a callback to his tech blog that was popular enough to appear on MSNBC's Newsvine. That blog predates the era of thought leadership as a growth hack. Porter was writing about enterprise AI because he was thinking about it constantly, not because someone told him to build a content funnel.

He mentors founders on Briia.io, specializing in AI and "zero to scale" - the full arc from founding to growth. His availability as a mentor reflects something consistent across his career: he teaches. Multiple sources describe him as a "tireless teacher." For someone who has led companies serving pharmaceutical giants and built AI systems for banks like American Express and Discover Card, spending time with early-stage founders suggests a genuine orientation toward the craft of company building, not just the outcome of it.

His co-founder at Cognizer, Soundararajan Velu, brings the deep technical architecture. The pairing is classic Porter: he builds companies with strong technical counterparts, then focuses on vision, product, and customer alignment. The decision to site Cognizer's research labs in Bangalore and Hyderabad - while keeping headquarters in Pleasanton, California - reflects his long experience with global development teams.

What's distinctly his own is the bet he placed in 2018: that contracts, not chatbots or recommendation engines, were where enterprise AI could create irreplaceable value. The legal tech industry was not the most crowded space for VC money at the time. Porter saw the unstructured data problem - billions of pages of contract language sitting inert in document repositories - and built a company to make it legible. The Genius platform, launched in 2023, is the result of five years of careful engineering under that thesis.

Cognizer's philosophy - "Human-centered. AI-smart. Built for enterprise clarity." - is not marketing copy designed to sound warm. It's a direct statement of the design constraint Porter has imposed on the product: the human doesn't get replaced, they get amplified. In a moment when many AI companies are racing to automate the paralegal out of existence, Cognizer's positioning is more interesting. The contract knowledge graph doesn't tell lawyers what to think. It gives them things to think with.

Human-centered. AI-smart. Built for enterprise clarity.

Seven Things Worth Knowing

01

His LinkedIn handle "@hightechexec" comes from a tech blog popular enough to land on MSNBC's Newsvine platform. He picked the name before personal branding was a profession.

02

Cognizer spent two full years (2019-2021) building its NLP platform before onboarding a single enterprise customer. In a world of "move fast," Porter moved deliberately.

03

He worked on AI for Reliance Jio, India's largest telecom operator - a project measured in hundreds of millions of users, not thousands.

04

He has published 8 books on technology and entrepreneurship. That's a book for roughly every company he's led.

05

PharmaVoice named him one of the Top 100 Most Influential People in the pharmaceutical industry in 2007 - nearly two decades before AI in pharma became a funding category.

06

Cognizer's Genius platform doesn't just read contracts - it builds a semantic "contract family" network, mapping how one contract relates to and modifies others across an enterprise's entire portfolio.

07

He is a Venture Partner at The Entrepreneur Fund while simultaneously running Cognizer - because apparently leading one company is not enough to fill his calendar.
