JF & I Packaging has built a business by treating those choices as connected. The company began in Sri Lanka in 1978, when founder Neville Fernando set out to provide offset printing for fast-moving consumer goods. Nearly five decades later, the press is only one piece of a much larger machine.
JF&I now works across paper and board, corrugated cartons, PET and PP formats, and flexible packaging. One especially stealable idea is the company's “Bye Bye Adhesives” approach. Instead of gluing a multi-part structure, designers use tabs, slots and interlocking folds. The result can remove an input, make the pack easier to separate at the end of its life, and reduce assembly cost. It is a modest intervention, which is precisely why it matters. Sustainable packaging rarely arrives as a single miracle substrate. More often it comes from dozens of design decisions that each remove a little weight, waste or complexity.
02 / The methodSpeed lives before the production line
Manufacturing speed is often measured after a press starts running. JF&I also works on the time before that moment. Its Design Hub combines 3D modeling, calibrated digital printing and plotter-cut sampling so a customer can examine a physical structure before committing to mass production. An in-house testing facility keeps quality checks close to the factory rather than sending every question outside. Faster proofs and tests can shorten the loop between an idea, a correction and an approved run.

03 / The footprintFollowing the factories, not just the shoppers
JF&I's geography reveals its customer strategy. It operates five production facilities and three warehouses in Sri Lanka, with entities in the UAE, Kenya and Bangladesh. Sales also reach the United States and Europe. The pattern follows manufacturing corridors, particularly for apparel and consumer goods. A brand may be headquartered in New York or London while its garments are cut and sewn near Dhaka, Colombo or Nairobi. Producing the carton, label or outer closer to that work can reduce freight, lead time and coordination.
The expansion came in stages. The UAE plant opened in 2012. Kenya followed in 2018, with a larger 24,000-square-foot facility operating by 2021. Bangladesh operations began in 2022. This is not a marketplace model with idle suppliers bidding for orders. It is capital-intensive manufacturing: presses, converting equipment, trained operators, testing systems, warehouses and quality controls. Revenue figures are not public, but the commercial logic is clear. Win recurring packaging programs, keep specifications consistent, and become embedded in how customers launch and move products.

04 / The climate testSustainability that has to survive the factory
JF&I describes sustainability through the familiar three Rs: reduce, reuse and recycle. The more revealing claims concern operations. The company is FSC certified, promotes certified fiber to customers, uses low-volatile inks and adhesives, and says it turns its own production waste into recycled printable paper products. It describes itself as zero-landfill. Digital delivery for minor artwork changes and proofs can reduce the physical samples that would otherwise be printed and discarded.
Design connects those factory practices to the customer's bill of materials. Thinner or smaller is useful only when the pack still works, so rapid prototypes and tests are central to material reduction. Interlocking designs can remove adhesive. Flat-pack carriers can make storage and transport less wasteful. E-commerce concepts can use post-consumer, paper-based or FSC-approved materials. Supply planning can trim the distance packaging travels before it meets the product it protects.
Those measures do not make every format circular. The portfolio still includes plastics and flexible structures whose end-of-life options depend on composition and local collection systems. The credible point is narrower: JF&I has placed material choice, waste and logistics inside its design process rather than treating them only as a communications layer. The customer still has to choose among price, performance, appearance and recovery. JF&I gives that decision a prototype.
05 / The moatConsistency at the unglamorous edge
The alternatives are numerous. Sri Lanka has established printers and corrugated specialists, while international groups can serve multinationals across continents. JF&I's differentiation is the combination of substrates, local design and testing, a footprint aligned with regional manufacturing, and experience across very different end markets. That mix lets it solve around the package. A pure converter may quote the object. JF&I can also discuss the proofing delay, the pallet pattern, the customer's second factory and the waste created by an unnecessary component.
Print consistency is a useful example. In 2026 the company reported G7 calibration across its Sri Lankan and Kenyan operations, completed with Pressman India and JDC. For a customer splitting work between locations, color that travels accurately is not a decorative achievement. It protects a brand from receiving two shades of the same supposedly standard carton. The best industrial relationships are built on preventing such small, expensive surprises.
Recognition has followed: Presidential Export Awards in printing, stationery and packaging; multiple categories at the 2025 Sri Lanka Packaging Awards; and a manufacturing-sector management award in 2026. Awards are not the business model. They are evidence that a Sri Lankan supplier has learned to compete in a field where reliability is noticed mostly when it fails.
