Before a pair of shoes, a Wi-Fi extender, or a holiday gift gets a chance to impress anyone, its package has already done a remarkable amount of work. It has survived a factory line, a container, a warehouse, a truck and, perhaps, a delivery driver with an improvisational relationship to gravity. It has negotiated freight rates and retailer rules. Then, with almost comic timing, it is expected to look untouched and make the product inside feel inevitable.
L&E International lives inside that contradiction. The privately held company, founded in 1965 and headquartered in Garden City, New York, operates as part design studio, part engineering consultancy, part testing lab and part global production manager. Its public portfolio jumps from rigid presentation boxes and shopping bags to molded-fiber electronics cradles, corrugated shipping systems, dust bags, hang tags and the tissue paper that performs its brief role in an unboxing video.
The breadth is the point. A package rarely fails in only one dimension. A beautiful box can arrive crushed. A protective box can ship too much empty air. A fiber replacement can sound virtuous but require more material than the plastic it replaces. A clever prototype can become impossible to reproduce consistently in five countries. L&E tries to keep those decisions in the same room, even when the room is spread across North America, Europe and Asia.
01 / The offerA package with more than one job
The company's core offer starts with custom packaging design, but it moves quickly into structure, materials, prototyping, print control, testing, sourcing and production. For a brand manager, that can mean sharpening the shelf presence of a shoe box. For a packaging engineer, it can mean reducing movement around a fragile device. For procurement, it can mean placing production closer to an assembly line. For a sustainability team, it can mean comparing an existing format with a fiber-based alternative using life-cycle analysis software.
L&E markets the result through three practical outcomes: lower packaging and logistics cost, less product damage, and a stronger brand experience. These goals can pull against one another. Thick material feels reassuring but adds weight. Elaborate finishes look premium but complicate recycling. A snug package saves space but may transfer shock. The value of an integrated supplier is not that it makes the tension disappear. It can put a price, test result or production constraint beside the creative decision before a million units make the mistake expensive.

02 / The machineDesign, test, make, repeat
This is where L&E differs from a local box converter or a pure branding agency. Its teams can move from a concept and dieline to a prototype, put that prototype through an International Safe Transit Association procedure, revise it, manage color and prepress, source the materials, and coordinate manufacturing. The company operates ISTA-certified facilities in Beaverton, Oregon, and Noida, India. It also participates in Amazon's Packaging Support and Supplier network and describes itself as a certified supplier or packaging partner for Walmart and Target.
Retailer programs matter because compliance is not glamorous until a shipment misses a launch. Amazon's tests can simulate parcel handling; other ISTA protocols cover vibration, compression, drops, air shipment and unitized loads. L&E's public testing site makes a dry but important promise: if the design needs help after the test, its engineers are already there. The loop between failure and redesign is shorter.
In Portland, Oregon, the company recently began promoting an in-house prototyping operation called the Dream Factory. The name suggests Willy Wonka; the menu is more useful: mockups, short print runs, concepting, extended-gamut printing, design services and influencer kits. Rapid physical prototypes give creative and operations teams something to argue about with their hands. A screen rendering cannot tell you whether a tab feels cheap, a lid opens with too much resistance or an insert releases the product without a wrestling match.
03 / The customerBrands with scale and something breakable
L&E serves consumer electronics, footwear, apparel, luxury, retail, consumer goods and e-commerce. Its public work includes packaging tied to Verizon, adidas, Target, Crate & Barrel, Lowe's, Columbia, Payless, Fred Perry, L.A. Gear and Lululemon. The company says it works with Fortune 500 businesses and private-label programs. These are customers for whom packaging is not a side order. It is a repeated global operation with marketing consequences.
Consider electronics. The package has to immobilize an expensive object, survive parcel delivery, keep accessories orderly, present setup information and avoid looking like a protective bunker. L&E shows Verizon device boxes printed on certified black substrate with silkscreen ink and spot varnish. Underneath the finish sits a more prosaic challenge: minimizing weight and volume without inviting damage. In footwear, the structure may be less fragile, but display, stacking, tissue, tags and special launches add their own choreography.
For an adidas x Unisport F50 launch, L&E's portfolio shows a limited-edition, 3D-printed, time-release box. Packaging, in this case, did not merely reveal the product. It made waiting part of the product launch.
That example is theatrical, but the business model is grounded in repetition. L&E is paid through custom programs and ongoing production: design and engineering may begin the relationship, while sourcing, manufacturing, testing, quality control and supply-chain coordination carry it forward. In a 2018 industry profile, the company said it delivered more than one billion packaging units in a year. The figure is historical and company-reported, but it explains why an apparently tiny improvement earns attention.
04 / The material questionSustainability meets the drop test
Sustainable packaging attracts slogans because the underlying math is awkward. Paper is not automatically better. Recyclable does not mean recycled. A lighter package may reduce freight emissions but increase damage. L&E's answer is to combine material selection with structural optimization and logistics. Its menu includes molded fiber, kraft board, paper-based plastic replacements, recyclable formats, responsibly sourced paper and bio-based bags. Older product material says its Mozaic bags use 45 to 50 percent less petroleum-based plastic than traditional poly bags while retaining comparable strength.
The company also says its engineers use life-cycle analysis software to compare the package already in use with proposed alternatives. That creates a more credible conversation than changing colors to kraft brown and calling it a day. Material weight, shipping volume, recycled content, protection and end-of-life options can be considered together. The output can also help a client explain packaging decisions to customers and sustainability stakeholders.
The most direct gains may be the least photogenic. Remove unused internal space and more units fit on a pallet. Reduce weight and freight changes. Replace foam with a fitted fiber insert and disposal becomes easier where suitable recycling systems exist. Improve protection and fewer replacement products make the trip twice. None of these claims should be treated as automatic. They are hypotheses to be designed, tested and measured - which is precisely why the laboratory belongs next to the sustainability pitch.
05 / The positionThe useful middle of a fragmented market
The packaging market has giant paper producers, protective-packaging specialists, retail-trim suppliers, design agencies, independent laboratories and thousands of converters. A buyer can assemble those pieces independently. L&E competes by acting as the connective tissue. Its production teams work upstream while a package is still being designed; engineers check whether specifications fit the journey; print specialists manage artwork and prepress; regional operations can move supply closer to where products are assembled.
That positioning will not suit every customer. A small merchant ordering a standard mailer needs a catalog and a price, not a multinational engineering program. L&E makes more sense when the package is custom, the volume is meaningful, the brand is visible, the product can be damaged, or production crosses borders. Its closest alternatives include integrated firms such as r-pac, SML, Nefab and TransPak, larger material and packaging groups, and a hand-built stack of specialist vendors.
The company is now led by Ian Silverberg, son of founder Errol Silverberg. The initials honor Errol and Lynn Silverberg, giving an industrial supplier a surprisingly personal name. The second generation is expanding rapid prototyping, sustainable materials and multi-region coverage without abandoning the old premise. The package has to work.
That premise sounds modest. It is also a useful way to see the category. Packaging is where a product becomes a physical business: where design meets gravity, where sustainability meets a materials bill, and where a brand meets the person who has been waiting at the door. L&E's opportunity is to make those meetings less accidental.
