The engineers at Skyways do not fly their aircraft so much as address them. There is no joystick in the loop, no pilot leaning over a controller on the ramp. A route is a set of coordinates and a flight plan, uploaded before takeoff. Then a fixed-wing drone lifts off vertically like a helicopter, tips forward into airplane flight, and carries its cargo across a state - navigating by onboard sensors, machine learning, and computer vision, deciding for itself what the wind and the airspace require. The company calls the result “Efficiency Elevated.” Its customers call it a way to move things to places people would rather not fly.
Founded in 2017 and hardened by nearly a decade of building real hardware, the Austin company has spent 2025 and 2026 stepping out of the long, unglamorous middle of a hardware startup and into a scale-up. In June 2025 it secured a $37 million contract from the U.S. Air Force's AFWERX innovation arm - one of the larger awards handed to an autonomous drone company - to move its flagship V3 aircraft from prototype to full-rate production. Two months later it flew a series of autonomous cargo missions between two military installations in North Dakota, in national airspace, under real FAA oversight. The thesis Skyways has been quietly testing for years is now getting an expensive, public trial.
01 / What They Actually DoCargo, not passengers - and cargo first
Skyways designs, builds, and operates long-range autonomous cargo aircraft: uncrewed vertical-takeoff-and-landing (VTOL) drones built for logistics rather than sightseeing. The aircraft are what the company calls “double-hybrid” - they take off like a helicopter, cruise like an airplane, and run on both electric and fuel power. That combination is the whole point. Vertical takeoff means no runway; fixed-wing cruise means real range; hybrid power means the aircraft can stay up long enough to matter.
To date the company reports building more than 20 aircraft and flying over 1,100 flights. That flight log is the pitch. Where many drone ventures sell a rendering and a roadmap, Skyways self-funds full-scale flying prototypes early, so a prospective customer can watch the aircraft do the job before signing anything.
02 / Who Buys ItThe military, the Navy, and an oil rig
Skyways did not aim its aircraft at your doorstep. Its customers are the U.S. Air Force, the U.S. Navy, the Department of Defense and allied forces, and - on the commercial side - an oil and gas operator using the drones to resupply offshore platforms. What those buyers share is a delivery problem where every trip is expensive, risky, or both: a forward base, a ship at sea, a rig fifty miles into the Gulf. The hardest, most costly deliveries turn out to be the best market, because that is where autonomy pays for itself fastest.
03 / The ProblemWhy $30,000 an hour is the whole argument
The clearest way to understand Skyways is to look at what it replaces. Moving cargo between ships at sea today often means a crewed helicopter, and by the company's figures a helicopter flight hour runs on the order of $30,000. A fully deployed autonomous fleet, Skyways argues, could do the same ship-to-ship resupply for roughly $100 a flight hour. When the gap between the old way and the new way is that wide, the interesting question stops being whether it happens and becomes when.
Cost is only half of it. The other half is risk. Autonomous cargo flights keep crews out of contested or remote airspace, and they scale in a way crewed aviation cannot - you cannot mass-produce pilots, but you can mass-produce aircraft.

The V3's range is the headline number. At more than a thousand miles on a single flight, it is enough to cross the entire mainland United States - Mexico to Canada - without stopping. For a logistics planner, that turns a chain of hops and handoffs into one leg.
05 / ProofProject ULTRA: 12 days in real airspace
In August 2025, Skyways ran what may be its most consequential demonstration yet. Under the Department of Defense's Project ULTRA, the company flew autonomous cargo missions between Grand Forks Air Force Base and Cavalier Space Force Station in North Dakota - about 60 miles per round trip. Over 12 days it completed roughly 20 flights and delivered around 230 pounds of cargo, all Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS), in national airspace, alongside crewed aircraft, under real FAA oversight.
One payload made the point sharper than the mileage did: temperature-controlled blood, held at about 4°C by proprietary onboard cooling. When an unplanned emergency landing came up mid-program, the autonomous system handled it. Flying in a demo is one thing; flying under real constraints, in shared airspace, with a delivery that fails if it gets warm, is the thing customers actually pay for.
06 / How It's DifferentFly it, then sell it
The autonomous-aviation field is crowded with names - Zipline and Wingcopter in delivery, Elroy Air and others in heavier cargo, plus a wave of defense-focused entrants. Skyways' differentiation is less a single feature than a sequence: build the full-scale aircraft, fly it on real missions, then sell it. Full autonomy - coordinates in, cargo delivered, no remote pilot in the decision loop - is the technical core. But the strategic edge is refusing to sell capability the aircraft cannot yet demonstrate.
That discipline shapes the business model too. Rather than chasing consumer volume, Skyways funds itself through government contracts and awards - the AFWERX deal, DoD programs like ULTRA, SBIR and OTA awards - layered with commercial resupply work. The stated goal is to become the military's “Program of Record” for unmanned aerial logistics: not a vendor on a pilot project, but the default platform.
07 / The MoneyFrom a $1M seed to $37M in defense dollars
Skyways started small. A roughly $1 million seed in 2017 - backed by Mayfield, Susa Ventures, NextView Ventures, OMERS Ventures, FJ Labs and others, alongside angels including Charlie Songhurst and Adrian Aoun - funded the early years of quietly building aircraft. Then, in June 2025, came the $37 million Air Force AFWERX contract and a separate $5 million debt facility from Leonid Capital Partners, earmarked to accelerate V3 production for the Department of Defense. Reported total funding sits around $54 million. Eight years of patient hardware, then a step change.

Skyways operates out of a 250,000-square-foot facility in North Austin's Tech Ridge, with flight testing moving to a site south of Elgin. Around 30 people work in Central Texas today, a number the company plans to roughly double over 2026. The founder's framing of the year ahead is refreshingly unglamorous: the hard, uncelebrated work of turning a hand-built prototype into a repeatable product.
That is the honest risk in the Skyways story. A drone that flies a thousand miles is an engineering achievement; building enough of them, reliably and affordably, is a manufacturing one - a different discipline, and the place hardware companies most often stall. The autonomy has been demonstrated. The airspace access has been demonstrated. What remains to be proven is the factory. If Skyways clears it, the drone maker that spent eight years being early may turn out, in 2027, to be exactly on time.
