Kite Aero tells its story from the ground, in front of a screen, where one pilot watches over a fleet. That is the company's central argument: in aerial logistics, the aircraft is the easy part. The hard part is the software, the approvals, and the tens of thousands of flight hours that convince a regulator to let those drones share the sky.
Kite Aerospace Pty Ltd - trading as Kite Aero - is an Australian company that came together in 2025 around a specific opportunity. Swoop Aero, a well-known Melbourne drone-logistics business that had built a medical-delivery network across remote regions, had gone into liquidation. Its aircraft, called Kite, and its operations software were valuable, proven, and suddenly available. Kite Aero acquired those assets and relaunched them, led by co-founder and CEO Philip van der Burg, who previously ran fellow Australian drone company Carbonix.
What Kite Aero bought was less a set of airframes than a track record. The platform it inherited had logged more than 40,000 autonomous flights and over 20,000 flight hours, and carried 16 international beyond-visual-line-of-sight (BVLOS) approvals - the regulatory permissions that allow a drone to fly beyond the operator's eyesight. Through its heritage humanitarian network, the platform had delivered more than a million critical medical supplies, vaccines and diagnostics across roughly 25 countries.
The company's stated mission is plain: "making access to the skies seamless." In practice that means moving goods to places conventional logistics struggles to reach - remote clinics, flood zones, communities where a truck simply can't go - and doing it reliably enough that health systems and governments can depend on it.
Kite Aero operates a drone transport network built on two things: the Kite aircraft, a long-range logistics drone designed for demanding, out-of-the-way environments; and AXIOM, a cloud-based software suite that plans, authorises and flies the missions.
AXIOM is underpinned by what the company calls a Digital Twin - a live software replica of the whole operation, mirroring every aircraft and mission in the cloud. The suite spans the full chain, from production through to delivery-network order management, and is designed to run an effectively unlimited fleet from anywhere with an internet connection.
The single most important number in the platform is a ratio. Through the Remote Pilot Station, one pilot can monitor and command up to 30 aircraft at once. Traditional drone operations assume one pilot per aircraft, which caps how large a network can grow. Change that ratio and the economics of the whole business change with it.
AXIOM's Operations Management System is built around what Kite Aero calls "predetermined outcomes" - the strategic decisions for a flight are made and programmed before the aircraft ever leaves the ground. The Flight Planner runs automated checks against aircraft limits, airspace, terrain and ground risk, and won't approve a route that breaches them.
It is a quiet reframe of what "autonomous" should mean. Rather than an aircraft improvising in the air, the system front-loads the judgement into planning and compliance, then lets the fleet execute.
