In 2007, a workshop in Sharjah started laying up fiberglass hulls under the name Al Marakeb - Arabic for "the boats." Nearly two decades later, the boats matter less than what sits inside them. Marakeb Technologies now sells the thing that makes a vehicle drive, sail, or fly itself: a platform-agnostic autonomy stack that treats the vehicle as a shell and the intelligence as the product.
The company designs and manufactures autonomous systems and ground control stations for marine, ground, and aerial vehicles. Its customers span the military, civil defense, security, oil and gas, environmental, transportation, and health-and-safety sectors. The through-line is simple: take something that needs a human at the controls, and remove the human - safely, and without throwing away the vehicle the customer already owns.
That last point is the strategy. Rather than building purpose-made drones from scratch, Marakeb converts. Its patented MAP Pro kit can be installed on almost any aerial, ground, or marine platform to give it remote-operated and fully autonomous capability. Ninety-plus manned platforms have been converted this way, with more than 200 third-party sensors and weapons integrated across roughly ten countries. Integration, not invention, is the moat.
Mine-hunting, harbor patrol, environmental survey, force protection - many maritime and ground jobs are dull, dirty, or dangerous enough that navies and operators would rather not put a crew there. The conventional answer is a purpose-built unmanned vehicle, which is expensive and locks a buyer into one vendor's hardware.
Marakeb's answer is a conversion layer. Because MAP Pro is designed to be platform-agnostic, an operator can autonomise a vessel or vehicle they already trust, keep their existing sensors, and add or swap payloads as missions change. Marakeb frames the resulting unmanned platforms as "force multipliers" - one uncrewed unit doing the work of a crewed one, at lower cost and no risk to human life.

One kit, three domains. The same MAP Pro that pilots a naval USV can drive a ground vehicle or fly an aerial platform. Most competitors specialize in a single domain.
Built to lose GPS. MAP Pro provides autonomous navigation over predetermined waypoints even in GPS-denied environments - a defense-grade requirement, not a nice-to-have.
Integration depth. A decade of converting other people's platforms and wiring in other people's sensors is hard to copy quickly. That library of 200+ integrations is the real product.

Marakeb has stated an ambition to become the world's first mass producer of unmanned surface vessels, and it has sized the opportunity close to home: the company estimates the Middle East USV market could be worth as much as US$4 billion within five years. It competes with global unmanned-systems houses - names like L3Harris, Elbit Systems, and Sea Machines - while within the UAE, EDGE Group's ADASI is the nearest domestic alternative.
Its edge in that field is less about any single vehicle and more about being the autonomy supplier the platform makers call. That is why shipbuilders the size of Naval Group and Fincantieri have signed agreements with a company of roughly thirty people.
Marakeb makes money four ways: selling autonomy kits (MAP Pro, MAP Pilot), building and integrating complete unmanned platforms, developing naval systems under joint-development agreements, and providing sensor and weapon integration services. It is a B2B and B2G business - defense forces, government agencies, and industrial operators - not a consumer one.
The capital behind it is strategic rather than venture-typical. Tawazun's Strategic Development Fund (SDF) first took 30% of Marakeb in 2019, then raised its stake to 50% in a November 2021 round, citing the company's technology, R&D potential, and commitment to developing local Emirati talent.
