Coupa makes the money leave smarter

Every company knows what it sold. Knowing what it bought is harder. Coupa built a business around closing that gap, one purchase request at a time.

A company can invent a medicine, run a laboratory and sell across continents, yet still struggle with the purchase order. Consider AstraZeneca. Before its procurement overhaul with KPMG and Coupa, the drugmaker operated eight instances of a purchasing platform. Employees wanted goods and services. Suppliers wanted to know where their invoices stood. Between them sat a process with too many moving parts.

THE STORY IN 30 SECONDS
  • Coupa connects sourcing, purchasing, invoices, expenses and payments in cloud software.
  • Its wager: people follow spending rules more often when buying is easier.
  • The useful lesson is practical: fix the route a purchase takes before adding more controls.

The trouble starts before the invoice

That is Coupa’s territory: the surprisingly consequential distance between wanting something and paying for it. Finance sees the eventual expense. Procurement negotiates the agreement. An employee places the order. If those activities happen in separate systems, a negotiated saving can evaporate before anyone notices. A cheaper contract is useful only if people actually buy against it.

Coupa puts those steps into a connected workflow. A request enters the system, moves through approval, becomes a purchase order and meets the supplier’s invoice. Its software also covers sourcing, contracts, supplier management, employee expenses and payments. Supply chain design tools extend the question from “What should we buy?” to “How should this network operate?”

The customer is usually an organization with enough purchasing complexity to need coordination across teams. Suppliers participate too, receiving orders and submitting invoices. Coupa’s expertise lives in the handoffs between these people.

A procurement veteran picks a fight with complexity

Dave Stephens and Noah Eisner founded Coupa in 2006 after working on procurement products at Oracle. In his original announcement, Stephens described enterprise software as “overly complicated, heavyweight, and yawn-inspiring.”

The original plan included open source software, available through download and SaaS. Today’s Coupa is a much broader commercial cloud platform.

Coupa’s distinction is its combination of connected applications and community transaction data. The pitch is that patterns across customers can improve benchmarks and decisions for an individual customer. SAP Ariba, Ivalua and Oracle offer competing procurement suites. Buyers are choosing between established ways of organizing spending, with integration and user adoption carrying real weight.

Eight systems. One buying habit.

At AstraZeneca, the change involved far more than installing another application. KPMG describes a readiness assessment, supplier analysis, data preparation and a standard global design that still accommodated local requirements. The work covered 11 key markets, 35,000 users and about $9 billion in spend.

The results make the case tangible. Reported spend compliance rose from about 50% to more than 98%. Fully digital transactions increased from 47.5% to 85%. Average requisition-to-order time fell from three days to one and a half. Those figures belong to a particular transformation, including its implementation partner and internal teams. They are evidence of what the combination achieved, rather than a promise attached to a software license.

The earlier failure was fragmentation and an awkward buying experience. The change was to simplify the operating design alongside the technology. That is the detail a reader can copy: agree on the process, clean supplier information and make the approved route convenient enough to become the ordinary route.

The $8 billion change of circumstances

Coupa’s own buying story contains a reversal. By late 2022, its board was confronting a weaker outlook. A transaction presentation filed with the SEC said new business in EMEA was down roughly 17% year to date and projected growth below market expectations. It also described outreach to 14 prospective acquirers.

That context explains the decision better than a victory lap would. Thoma Bravo completed an approximately $8 billion acquisition in February 2023, with a significant minority investment from an Abu Dhabi Investment Authority subsidiary. Shareholders received $81 a share, and Coupa left the public market. The figure was a transaction value, not today’s observable market capitalization.

For customers, the cost question is different. Coupa sells subscription software through negotiated orders. A sensible budget includes implementation, integrations, supplier onboarding and employee training alongside the subscription. The financial test is whether spending brought under control and administrative time recovered justify that whole commitment. Buying more modules does not answer it.

A NEW CHAPTER / 2023-2026The job was bigger than the shopping cart. Former CEO Leagh Turner led Coupa’s AI acquisition expansion. Mike Lipps became interim CEO in August 2026. Portrait: Coupa press image, 2023.

Now the request gets an agent

The next chapter adds AI to the same old coordination problem. In May 2026, Coupa acquired Tonkean, whose intake and orchestration technology connects requests with workflows across enterprise systems. It followed purchases of category management company Cirtuo, supplier discovery specialist Scoutbee and document processing company Rossum. The purchases address different pieces of the journey: choosing a strategy, finding a supplier, reading a document and moving work along.

An April 2026 five-year collaboration with AWS supports that direction. Coupa says its Navi agents use Amazon Bedrock to automate procurement work. The proposition is easier to understand when reduced to a task: help an employee submit a request, get the right approval and carry the relevant information into the next system.

By July 2026, Coupa reported a $10 trillion community dataset and more than 11 million buyers and suppliers. These are company-reported measures of platform scale. They should not be mistaken for annual revenue or the number of paying corporate customers.

Make the ordinary route the sensible one

Leadership changed again in August 2026, when Mike Lipps became interim CEO after Leagh Turner stepped away for personal reasons. The practical task for Coupa remains connecting an expanding collection of capabilities into something customers can operate.

Its culture offers a clue to the intended approach. Employees are called Coupanians; the company talks about a “Village.” Its values emphasize collaboration, belonging and accountability. The meaningful test comes when a finance team, supplier and employee need the same transaction to work.

For an organization with scattered purchasing, the lesson is to start with one recurring friction and measure the result. For a business with simple buying needs, a broad suite may demand more implementation than the problem warrants. And when supplier records are unreliable or teams reject the agreed process, automation can move confusion faster. Coupa’s opportunity rests on a modest human truth: an easier way to do the right thing has a better chance of being used.
