Company / The specialist economy

GreenPoint Global makes the complicated work

A legal brief, a bank’s risk model and an online classroom have something in common: somebody has to make the machinery work. GreenPoint Global has built a business around that somebody.

The most revealing detail about GreenPoint Global sits near the end of its legal FAQ. Its attorneys can prepare a document down to the signature line. They do not file the action for the client’s law firm. In the space between a finished brief and a signature lies a surprisingly useful description of the company: specialist work, carefully assigned, with somebody still responsible for the handoff.

The quick read / 30 seconds
  • Legal support, financial risk, education, privacy and marine data share the portfolio.
  • The delivery model combines subject specialists with software and process support.
  • Buyers get defined capacity; responsibility still needs an owner.

Start there and GreenPoint becomes easier to understand. Its offerings extend from litigation research to banking systems and online lessons. A product catalogue makes that sound untidy. A working professional might see something familiar: a pile of important tasks that require more expertise, time or tooling than the permanent team can provide.

Five doors into the same problem

GreenPoint Law & Compliance supplies research, drafting, document review, transactional assistance and publishing services. Its customers include law firms, insurers and corporate legal departments. The range reaches from solo practitioners to large organizations. Legal recruitment adds another option: when the need is a person inside the organization, rather than an assignment outside it, GreenPoint can help find one.

GreenPoint Financial addresses risk, valuation and regulatory technology. Its Summit practice implements and maintains Finastra’s capital-markets software, including upgrades, test automation, curve construction and model documentation. This is work for institutions whose software must accommodate their instruments, data and operating requirements. Buying the system begins the job; configuration and validation follow.

Tomorrow’s Genius, marketed through TG Campus, brings together live teaching, a learning-management system, an interactive whiteboard, multilingual content and testing analytics. Privacy Global organizes consent, data inventories, privacy assessments and related governance work. GreenPoint’s division list also includes Farohar’s marine data services: population, migration, surveys and training. The list rewards a second look. A classroom and a ship’s maintenance records rarely occupy adjacent lines in a corporate directory.

Founder and chairman Sanjay Sharma has an unusually apt background for this collection. His published biography records seven years as a merchant marine officer, followed by a financial-services career that included risk management at RBC Capital Markets. That history gives the maritime and financial offerings a human connection. It does not make every division the product of one grand founding insight.

The upgrade that could wait

One GreenPoint Summit case study provides a better view of the actual work than a catalogue can. An unnamed global bank needed to process risk-free rates replacing LIBOR. Its existing Summit installation was version 6.1.7. A full upgrade could not fit the available time and conflicted with another project.

GreenPoint describes building an interim application that allowed the bank to retain that version. The work included new rate curves, configuration changes, testing and a cutover plan. New formulas and index modifications supplied the functionality the client required. According to the case study, the resulting system could support the transition without the upgrade.

Notice the decision being sold. The answer was shaped by the client’s calendar and existing system. The technical team needed enough financial knowledge to understand the new calculations and enough implementation experience to make them operate in place. That combination puts GreenPoint in the market between specialist consulting and software delivery.

Sanjay Sharma / Finastra announcement, May 2018

Finastra’s 2018 announcement named GreenPoint Financial among four early US adopters of its open platform. Sharma’s statement concerned a planned application, rather than an announced launch. The relationship is broader than that early plan: Finastra also identifies GreenPoint as an education partner, while ActiveViam lists GreenPoint Financial in its partner directory.

A classroom in the banking business

The education connection is the pleasing twist. Finastra says the companies develop financial-literacy courses, certifications and business coaching through Tomorrow’s Genius. Its 2022 ESG report describes jointly created material translated from English into Spanish and Swahili for micro, small and medium-sized business owners in the southern United States and Kenya.

Here the odd-looking portfolio starts earning its keep. The learning platform becomes a way to deliver financial knowledge. Multilingual content matters because a useful explanation must reach the person borrowing or running the business. The same partnership can involve banking software on one side and understanding banking on the other.

Buy the handoff, too

The legal division makes the commercial mechanics unusually clear. Clients provide a project overview, deliverable, budget and deadline. Attorneys are matched using factors including practice area, licensing and availability. Once assigned, the attorney communicates directly with the commissioning lawyer. GreenPoint describes reviewing work before submission.

The legal operation calls its approach a tri-shore model, drawing on teams in the United States, India and Israel. GreenPoint’s corporate materials describe a mix of lawyers, paralegals, financial analysts, process specialists and software developers. For buyers, the relevant comparison depends on the assignment. A contract attorney, an internal hire and a banking-system consultant solve different parts of the capacity problem.

Security is part of that purchase, too. GreenPoint lists ISO quality, information-security and privacy standards, alongside SOC assessments. Those claims belong in a buyer’s diligence alongside the proposed team and review process. A certification label cannot describe an individual project’s scope.

Billing is hourly, at a rate agreed during onboarding. A client supplies a budget cap or estimate; exceeding it requires permission. That arrangement gives the buyer a way to control scope while purchasing specialist capacity. It also explains why this business depends on coordination as much as talent: someone must turn a request into an assignment that can actually be delivered.

The arrangement has practical boundaries. GreenPoint’s remote legal support covers drafting, research and review. The commissioning firm keeps the client relationship and filing responsibility. A buyer needing courtroom representation needs a different engagement. An unresolved conflict of interest or unavailable specialist can also prevent an assignment from going ahead.

There is a process here that other teams can copy: name the deliverable, fix the budget, match the expertise and decide who reviews the result. GreenPoint’s varied businesses make that lesson visible across unusually different settings. The brief, the model and the lesson each need tools. They also need a person who knows when the work is ready to leave the room.
