The oldest of the four, ToolWatch, started in 1991 as a tool-tracking application. That's the whole original idea: a database that knows which tools you own and where they are. It sounds almost quaint until you realize that a large electrical or mechanical contractor might own tens of thousands of individual assets - drills, meters, generators, ladders, boxes of consumables - each of which can wander off, get double-bought, sit idle, or vanish. The thing that turned ToolWatch into AlignOps was money with a plan behind it. In June 2021, The Riverside Company - a global private equity firm - made a strategic investment. The stated use of capital was not "grow the existing product." It was "buy complementary companies." And that is exactly what happened.
In 2022 came Safety Reports, a company founded in 2011 that had digitized jobsite safety inspections and OSHA compliance - taking the clipboard and turning it into a phone. In December 2023 came busybusy, a time-tracking app from 2010 with GPS-verified mobile clock-ins and payroll automation, which meant the platform now knew not just where the tools were, but where the people were. And FleetWatcher, dating to 2000, brought heavy-equipment telematics and paving/materials management - shaving idle time and trucking costs off the fleet.
By late 2024, the four were rebranded and unified under the AlignOps name. The pitch is deceptively simple: one login for the tools, the crews, the safety paperwork, and the fleet. Fewer systems that don't talk to each other. Fewer places for a fact to hide.
Construction is frequently described as one of the least-digitized major industries, and that description is usually delivered with a tone of opportunity - as if someone just needs to show up with an app. AlignOps is a reminder that the winners here aren't the ones with the flashiest demo. Running the combined company is Jay Martin, CEO, who came to AlignOps after serving as COO of aerial-imagery analytics firm EagleView and leading direct-to-consumer water-filtration company Aquasana - roughly 25 years in technology, much of it inside private-equity-owned businesses. The leadership bench spans product, operations, revenue, finance, engineering, and security, reflecting a company that is less scrappy upstart and more assembled operator.
The competitive neighborhood includes names like Procore, Trimble/Viewpoint, ServiceTitan, Fieldwire, Raken, and telematics players like Samsara - plus focused tool-tracking rivals such as ShareMyToolbox and GoCodes.
