3dot14 and the customer after the click

A cheap install can be an expensive mistake. 3dot14 built its advertising business around what people do next - and the patient work of finding more people like them.

An app install is a peculiar purchase. An advertiser pays to put something on a stranger’s phone, then waits to discover whether the stranger will ever use it. The download looks reassuring on a dashboard. The business may still be waiting for its first useful act. This interval - between acquiring a user and acquiring a customer - is where 3dot14 has made its pitch.

The useful bits / 30 seconds
  • The job: buy advertising that brings valuable app users.
  • The machinery: Radian, creative testing and retargeting.
  • The discipline: measure the action after the install.

01 / The click had a problem

In 2013, Dinesh Kumar and Ashish Kumar encountered an awkward question while working with education company NIIT: why were clicks failing to lower acquisition costs? Their answer became 3.14 Digital, with NIIT as its first client. The early operation combined an in-house buying platform with lead validation and a call centre. It followed the enquiry further than the advertisement.

The company’s own history starts with email marketing, then records a move into mobile advertising in 2015. Radian arrived in 2019. Each step brought the company closer to the same commercial question: what did that advertising money actually produce?

02 / Teach the machine what matters

Today, 3dot14 sits between advertisers seeking customers and the inventory on which advertisements appear. Its demand-side platform, Radian, gives buyers a dashboard for launching campaigns, controlling budgets and examining results across more than 40 exchanges, according to the company. The self-serve option puts those controls inside the advertiser’s operation.

The sequence is revealing. Its acquisition service initially optimizes for installs to gather data, then moves toward events deeper inside the app. Its approach page describes an initial learning period of two to three weeks. Before the system can distinguish a promising customer, it needs examples of what promising looks like.

For a game, the meaningful action might be an in-app purchase. For a shopping app, it might be an order. Those are different instructions from asking for the largest possible number of downloads. The company describes models that estimate conversion probability and acquisition price, using behavior and engagement signals to decide which users merit a bid.

The practical implication is simple: the conversion event is part of the brief. An algorithm taught to celebrate installation has received a different assignment from one taught to find repeat purchasers. Choosing that assignment deserves as much care as choosing the advertisement.

03 / The advertisement is an experiment

The buying engine has a companion: 3dot14 Creative Studio. It supports variations in message, format and location, with A/B and multivariate testing. The formats include playable ads, video, interstitials, native placements and banners. A playable can let someone sample a game; a localized message can make the proposition legible in another market.

This is where the company’s combination of services and software becomes useful. The buyer can investigate both the audience and what that audience sees. A disappointing result could reflect the placement, the message or the people receiving it. Testing creates a way to separate those possibilities before increasing the budget.

Retargeting extends the experiment. Radian can use first-party data to reach shoppers who abandoned a cart or users who became inactive. Its retargeting offering connects acquisition with retention: the customer already encountered may deserve another message. Whether that message causes an extra purchase still matters more than whether the customer saw it.

Measurement is another piece of the machinery. The company lists AppsFlyer, Branch, Kochava, Adjust and Singular as mobile measurement partners. For a buyer, that makes the setup conversation consequential. Which purchase or subscription event will be passed back? When will it be counted? If two channels claim the same customer, how will the team judge the campaign? Agreeing on those questions gives the performance report a job beyond looking encouraging.

04 / Count rides, then ask about the bill

The homepage names Amazon, Lazada, Dream11 and Groww among its clients. Its campaign headlines report more than 350 daily events for Amazon and more than 1,500 daily rides for Gojek. These are company-reported campaign results. Their useful feature is the unit being counted: activity beyond simply seeing an ad. Buyers should still agree on the event definition and measurement window.

Monthly minimums advertised

Radian’s self-serve page offers no monthly or contractual minimums. A campaign still needs a budget.

Cost depends on the arrangement. The self-serve proposition lowers the commitment required to start. For advertising services, the company’s published terms place fees in the insertion order. That distinction gives a prospective customer something concrete to negotiate: the billable outcome, reporting, spending limits and campaign scope.

There is also the cost of learning. A short promotion may finish before the published learning phase does. Sparse purchase data gives a model fewer examples. These are practical implications of the process, rather than reported customer failures. A marketer needs enough time and usable feedback to judge the experiment. Better targeting cannot repair an app that customers consistently abandon.

The company’s stated culture favors fast experiments, accountability and partner relationships. Those principles fit the operational demands of campaign work: someone must notice a weak creative, investigate the result and change the next test. They also explain why a dashboard is only part of the purchase. Buyers should decide who will interpret it, who can change the campaign and how quickly the team can act when the numbers disappoint.

05 / A wider screen, the same question

The toolkit is widening. 3dot14 offers connected TV campaigns and DotContext, which describes analysing YouTube video frames and audio to match advertising with relevant content. An April 2026 DSP announcement also emphasized polygon-based targeting, allowing advertisers to define geographic zones. These features extend the choice of where a message appears.

Its position is a combination of programmatic buying, campaign services and creative experimentation. A buyer comparing it with direct platform buying or another DSP should examine the inventory, the measurement and the work required to run it. The useful habit to copy is available immediately: define a valuable action, follow the customer far enough to observe it, then decide which advertising deserves another rupee.
