Before Roadie was a device, it was an argument with an oud. Bassam Jalgha played the 12-string instrument in a university band in Beirut, and tuning it swallowed the time he wanted to spend making music. This was not a metaphorical founder problem. It was 12 literal strings, repeatedly drifting out of pitch, waiting for a human hand to twist 12 pegs.
Jalgha, a mechanical and mechatronics engineer, began automating the job in 2009. His early machine won first prize and $300,000 on the Qatar-based reality program Stars of Science. It also had a less glamorous attribute: it was clunky. A prize can prove that an idea is interesting. It cannot make an awkward prototype fit inside a guitar case.
So Jalgha called Hassane Slaibi, a former university bandmate, flute player and computer engineer with audio-processing experience. The pairing supplied the two halves the product needed. Jalgha could make a motor turn a peg. Slaibi could write software that listened as an ear would, estimated the pitch and told the motor when to stop. They spent roughly two years refining that loop, formed Band Industries in 2013 and joined the HAX hardware accelerator in Shenzhen, where suppliers, molds and circuit-board revisions were close enough to compress weeks into days.

The product is a closed loop
A conventional tuner reports a problem. The string is flat; please turn the peg. Roadie completes the physical task. Place its connector over a geared peg, pluck the string and an onboard motor tightens or loosens it until the software sees the target pitch. The distinction sounds small until a player is restringing a guitar, moving through alternate tunings or facing twice the normal number of strings.
The product line is a decade-long record of friction being removed. The original Roadie relied on a phone to hear the note. Roadie 2, released in 2017, put detection and a screen in the device, making core tuning standalone. Roadie Bass added the torque required by heavier strings. Roadie 3 brought a color display, faster winding, more than 150 tunings and a vibrating metronome. Roadie Coach pushed beyond maintenance into practice, combining a clip-on recorder with app-guided learning.
Roadie 4, launched in 2025 and now shipping, is the current synthesis. It sells for $139 on Roadie's U.S. shop, detects vibration to resist noisy rooms, can recognize the string being played, and uses a larger color screen, scroll wheel and redesigned connector. It also works as a motorized string winder and metronome. The companion iOS and Android app manages instrument profiles, custom tunings, settings and firmware, but the basic tuning act stays on the hardware.
The customer paid for the factory
The founders calculated that their first production run would cost about $60,000. They did not have to disguise that bill as a grand theory of disruption. In late 2013 they placed the device on Kickstarter with a $60,000 goal. It cleared the mark in four days and finished at $178,613 from 2,002 backers. People did not merely say an automatic tuner sounded useful. They left deposits.
That changed the company's mind about how a niche hardware product could be built. Crowdfunding became more than emergency capital; it became the research department, preorder desk and launch stage. Roadie 2 and Roadie Bass later drew $502,931 from 4,741 backers in 93 countries. Roadie 3 raised $378,902 from 3,547 Kickstarter backers in 2020. Roadie 4 returned in 2025 and collected $317,579 against a $10,000 goal from 2,317 backers.
Institutional money followed the evidence. Berytech Fund II invested $1.5 million in 2016. In June 2020, Cedar Mundi Ventures led a $2.8 million Series A with iSME, B&Y Venture Partners, Berytech Fund II and SOSV participating. The stated plan was to extend reach, products and proprietary technology. The consumer business now combines direct ecommerce with distribution through Amazon, Guitar Center, Thomann, Sweetwater and B&H.
This is not subscription software wearing a plastic hat. Revenue arrives mainly when a customer buys a device or accessory. That creates the old hardware burdens: inventory, warranties, components, freight and the unforgiving cost of a bad mold. It also produces an object whose value is obvious in a ten-second demonstration. The peg moves by itself. No funnel diagram required.
The costs were not only financial. The founding pair left conventional jobs, spent four months in China during the HAX program and learned that Shenzhen's speed did not necessarily mean cheap production. Labor and living expenses were rising even then. What the city offered was iteration: a redesigned part could become a physical sample in days. For a mechanism in which connector geometry, motor force and acoustic judgment must agree, fast learning was worth as much as low unit cost. The founders kept manufacturing there even after discovering that “made in China” was not a synonym for effortless margins.
What failed first
The first failure was usability. Jalgha's prize-winning prototype could establish the concept, but contemporary accounts describe it as clunky. Then the first commercial version imposed a phone between player and instrument. Roadie 2 removed that dependency. Bass strings demanded more torque, so Roadie Bass arrived. Later generations addressed speed, grip, display size, connector fit, background noise and navigation.
That list matters because it reveals Roadie's expertise. The company is not simply good at pitch detection, nor merely at compact motors. It works at the boundary where audio processing, mechanical control, industrial design and musician behavior collide. A perfectly accurate tuner that slips off the peg is a bad product. A strong motor that cannot hear through a rehearsal room is also a bad product. Roadie's accumulated advantage is coordinating the system.
The clever move was not asking musicians to imagine the future. It was watching where the current device made them pause.
The latest public reviews also keep the story honest. Many players praise the speed of changing tunings, the help with 12-string guitars and the convenience of restringing. Others find a dedicated automatic tuner expensive, awkward or occasionally in need of a final check against a strobe tuner. Interface criticism has not vanished. Neither has physics: old, stiff or unusual machine heads can make any motor's job harder.
The narrow wedge and the larger market
Roadie's core customers are players of instruments with geared pegs: acoustic and electric guitars, ukuleles, mandolins, banjos, bouzoukis and, with the right model, basses. The strongest cases are beginners anxious about breaking strings, musicians managing several instruments, players who move between alternate tunings, 12-string owners, teachers and guitar technicians. The company says thousands of beginners and professionals use its products; its campaign counts independently show a community of repeatable, global demand.
Its alternatives are everywhere. A phone app can identify a note for free. A Snark or D'Addario clip-on can live on the headstock. Boss and TC Electronic sell familiar pedal tuners; Peterson owns the precision-minded strobe end. A cheap power winder handles string changes. Roadie asks customers to pay more because it bundles detection and action. It sits between an indicator and a human guitar tech.
Roadie Coach shows the tempting path outward. Once a company owns space in the case and an app on the phone, maintenance can become practice, recording and education. Yet the automatic tuner remains the cleaner proposition. It solves a visible chore completely. Education is broader, more subjective and crowded with apps. The lesson for Roadie may be the same one that created it: begin where the pain is mechanical enough to measure.
What another founder can steal
First, choose a boring pain with a clock attached. Tuning is not glamorous, but every minute spent on it visibly delays the reward. Second, build the closed loop. Roadie did not stop at “your string is flat”; it turned the peg. Third, make customers cross the strongest possible validation line. A survey response is pleasant. A refundable pledge for an unfinished device is information.
Fourth, treat each product as a list of exposed assumptions. The phone requirement, motor torque, screen, grip and noise sensitivity all became legible only in use. Finally, keep the wedge narrow until distribution catches up. Roadie began with a peculiar oud problem, expanded across geared-peg instruments, and earned shelves at major music retailers before reaching toward education.
There is no need to pretend tuning is a civilization-scale crisis. Roadie's appeal is more modest and more useful. Two engineers found a repetitive nuisance inside their own rehearsal, learned enough manufacturing to put a motor in a musician's hand, and let buyers finance the next question. The little machine turns. The note settles. The music gets its minute back.
