The most important part of a Deako light switch is the part you almost never see. Behind the white paddle is a proprietary connector, hardwired once into an ordinary junction box. A builder can click in a plain rocker and finish the house. Months or years later, the homeowner can pull a blue tab, remove that control and push in a dimmer, motion sensor or $99.99 smart switch. No exposed wire. No breaker-panel scavenger hunt. No electrician standing in the kitchen while the dog conducts a security interview.
That small piece of sequencing explains the Seattle company's rise better than any app feature. Smart-home brands normally court the person who lives in the house. Deako courted the people who make the house: builders, purchasing managers, electricians and integrators. The base layer could be inexpensive and boring. The profitable intelligence could arrive later.
The original switchA builder wanted less technology
In 2014, electrical engineer Derek Richardson was replacing switches in his own house while talking with a neighbor who built and remodeled homes. Richardson found the work complicated and irritating. His neighbor supplied the more valuable observation: builders were steering buyers away from smart-home packages because installation cost, support and warranties created trouble. They did not necessarily want a smarter object. They wanted a straightforward one.
Richardson had been an early BlackBerry employee and spent 13 years at Cypress Semiconductor. He could see both halves of the problem: the electronics and the channel. Deako was founded in 2015. Richardson and early co-founder Alexander Strunkin went through Y Combinator in 2016, when the 15-person startup raised $1.8 million. Its customers, Richardson said then, were homebuilders and electricians - not homebuyers.
The personal lesson was less tidy. Richardson later said founding alone was a mistake, and that promoting an early employee into a partnership without a deep reserve of trust did not survive startup pressure. He eventually leaned on a lifelong friend. It is an unusually candid footnote to a hardware story: modularity may work better for switches than for founding relationships.

What Deako actually didInstall the option before selling the upgrade
A Deako Connector goes in during construction like a normal backplate. The home can ship with simple rockers that work without Wi-Fi, an account or an app. That matters. Builders can advertise future-ready lighting without filling every room with expensive electronics or inheriting a support ticket whenever a router changes. Homeowners can later choose smart controls only for the porch, kitchen and bedroom, while leaving a closet gloriously dumb.
This is a B2B2C hardware model with e-commerce attached. Builders and distributors create the installed base. Electricians and integrators reduce the friction of handoff. Homeowners become the repeat buyers. Deako's three-year D.R. Horton agreement, announced in late 2020, was the scale event: all newly built D.R. Horton homes were set to receive Deako hardware from February 2021, with simple switches throughout and one smart switch included.
The company now names Toll Brothers, Maronda Homes, Stone Martin, Crescent Homes and Home Creations among more than 50 builder relationships. It says roughly 10,000 new homes receive Deako lighting each month. In 2024, it reported that installations were associated with homes selling up to 20 days faster. That is a company claim, not a universal law, but it sharpens the builder pitch: a switch can be merchandising, not merely electrical trim.
The price of convenienceA hundred-dollar switch in a twenty-dollar world
The objection is printed on the price tag. Deako's 2026 catalog lists the Gen 2 Smart Switch at $99.99 and the Smart Dimmer from $109.99. A Simple Dimmer or motion sensor costs $59.99; the nightlight switch is $32.99; timers range from $59.99 to $74.99; a Smart Plug is $44.99. Connector and faceplate components begin around $11.99. A competing Wi-Fi switch can cost less than $20.
What the wall can cost, one location at a time
Deako answers with avoided labor. Its modules take roughly 30 seconds to two minutes to swap once a connector is present. A one-off electrician visit can bring a minimum charge that dwarfs the switch. That logic is strongest for a homeowner who already has Deako behind the wall and wants to change only a few locations. It weakens during a whole-home renovation, when an electrician is already present and competing controls can be installed at the same time.
There is also lock-in. The connector accepts Deako controls, not a Leviton, Lutron or Kasa module. A homeowner can leave the ecosystem, but doing so means removing the connector and returning to standard wiring. Deako makes changing products inside its garden exceptionally easy. It does not make changing gardens easy.
What failed firstThe plumbing showed through
The early product did not make every complexity disappear. Older systems used a separate Wi-Fi bridge, which Deako later retired in favor of smart switches that perform the bridge function. Multi-way circuits - one light controlled from two or more locations - required users to understand and manually program the arrangement. That is exactly the electrical homework a plug-and-play product promises to eliminate.
In July 2025, the second-generation Smart Switch and revised app addressed that friction. Magic Linking automatically identifies and configures multi-way controls, cutting setup steps roughly in half, while a Beacon LED bar provides a locator or status light. The hardware supports Bluetooth mesh and 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, and Deako publishes integrations with Alexa, Google Home, SmartThings, Alarm.com, Control4, Clare and Home Assistant.
The broader lesson is not “add AI.” It is remove the point where the user has to learn your internal architecture. A homeowner wants the hallway light to work from both ends. The topology is the manufacturer's problem.
The next wallFrom switches to a house that watches without cameras
In April 2026, Deako previewed Deako Intelligence, an expansion from lighting controls into a whole-home sensing platform. Proposed Intelligent Switches use millimeter-wave radar to detect presence, position and subtle movement without cameras. An intercom model adds a microphone and speaker. A local hub is designed to store household data, bridge compatible devices and build predictive routines.
The concepts are logical extensions of hardware already distributed room by room: lighting that activates before someone enters, audio that follows a person, an intercom message routed only to occupied rooms, and Parent Care alerts when an aging relative's normal pattern changes. Deako also announced a Josh.ai integration in February 2026, giving builders and custom integrators another control layer.
But Intelligence is early access, with pricing still unfinished. Follow-me audio needs compatible Wi-Fi speakers. Circadian lighting needs compatible tunable bulbs. Homes without Deako Connectors need electrical installation. Presence data may stay local, but trust has to be earned with clear controls and behavior people can predict. A good distribution advantage gives Deako the right to try. It does not guarantee that families want an ambient-care system in every room.

New construction, builder-standard installs, households upgrading a few rooms over time, and buyers who value fast swaps more than the lowest module price.
Where it bends
Rentals, homes without neutral wires, budget-first whole-home retrofits, unreliable Wi-Fi, and owners who prefer open hardware with many interchangeable brands.
The copyable playbookSteal the sequence, not the switch
Deako's defensible idea is not merely modular hardware. It is matching incentives across a chain in which the purchaser, installer and user are different people. Builders get a low-risk sales feature. Electricians get a repeatable installation. Integrators get fast upgrades. Homeowners get choice later. Deako gets a proprietary slot in the wall.
- Make the base layer useful. A product that becomes dead without software will scare conservative channel partners.
- Move adoption earlier. Get specified during construction, procurement or onboarding, before the end user faces a crowded market.
- Delay the expensive decision. Cheap infrastructure now can create optional, higher-value upgrades later.
- Sell operational calm. Fewer callbacks and truck rolls can matter more to a partner than another consumer feature.
- Name the lock-in honestly. Proprietary convenience works only while customers believe the future catalog will justify staying.
The model will not travel everywhere. It needs a physical moment when installation is unusually cheap, a base component affordable enough to become standard, a long-lived interface and upgrade products worth buying later. It also needs channel patience. Deako spent years raising capital, expanding manufacturing and persuading builders before the installed base became the story. By April 2026, it reported 17 granted patents, more than 32 million products shipped and a five-year revenue compound annual growth rate of 121 percent. The company ranked No. 182 on the 2024 Inc. 5000 and No. 1,351 a year later.
A light switch is touched, ignored and expected to last for decades. Deako's wager is that this boring permanence is an advantage: earn the wall once, then keep giving the square white object new jobs. The next test is whether a company that simplified electrical upgrades can make home intelligence feel equally uneventful. In a smart home, uneventful is often the highest compliment available.
