Dandelion is now the largest home geothermal provider in the United States. It drills loops of pipe deep into the earth, where the temperature holds steady year round, then pairs them with a heat pump that moves warmth into the house in winter and pulls it out in summer. One all-electric system replaces both the furnace and the air conditioner. No combustion, no flame, no fumes. The earth does the heavy lifting; the homeowner mostly forgets it is there.

Solar panels look like the future. Heating a house does not. Yet a huge share of a home's carbon footprint comes from the unglamorous business of staying warm - furnaces burning gas, oil, or propane all winter long. Electrifying transportation got the headlines. Electrifying heat got the shrug.
Geothermal was the obvious answer and the impossible sell. It worked beautifully and cost a fortune. Drilling was slow, custom, and priced like minor surgery, which meant ground-source heat pumps stayed a luxury for people with both deep pockets and deep yards. The technology had existed for decades. The economics had not. That gap - clean heat that almost nobody could afford - is the single problem Dandelion was built to close.

Dandelion began inside X, Alphabet's lab for ideas that sound faintly ridiculous until they work. Kathy Hannun, a Stanford-trained product manager, and co-founder James Quazi spent years there asking a deceptively simple question: how do you electrify heat for the whole planet? Their answer was not a new physics. It was cheaper drilling. Make the hole in the ground fast and standardized instead of slow and bespoke, and the entire cost structure of geothermal collapses.
In 2017 they spun the company out of X - keeping the drilling patents themselves, with Google taking a stake in return. The following year Dandelion launched Dandelion Air, marketed as the first sub-$20,000 geothermal heat pump, financeable over twenty years. The bet was that geothermal's only real enemy was its price tag, and that a startup willing to obsess over drilling rigs and install logistics could finally win.
The team that gathered around the idea did not come from the heating trade. It came from the people who had already scaled hard climate products: alumni of Opower, Tesla, SolarCity, and Sungevity, who knew that the difference between a clever device and a real industry is usually boring operational discipline. Later the company brought in Dan Yates - an early investor and board member who had built and sold the home-energy company Opower - as CEO and chairman, with Hannun staying on as president. The founders were betting on execution, not invention.

Sell the comfort, hide the engineering
What a homeowner buys is simple: even temperatures, lower bills, and a basement that smells like nothing. What Dandelion actually delivers is a coordinated act of engineering - borefield design software, compact drilling rigs, ground loops, manifolds, and a proprietary heat pump, all installed end to end by one company instead of a relay race of subcontractors.
The pitch to homeowners is concrete. Cut heating and cooling bills by roughly 30 to 50 percent. Outlast a conventional HVAC system by about double. Drop the outdoor condenser entirely. Stay all-electric and ahead of tightening energy codes. For people who flinch at the upfront cost, Dandelion added financing and a leasing program - borrowing the playbook that made rooftop solar ordinary.

When the homebuilders show up
A climate idea is interesting. A climate idea that the people building thousand-home subdivisions want to standardize on is a business. Dandelion's Series C in September 2024 - $40 million led by Google Ventures, with Collaborative Fund, Breakthrough Energy Ventures, NGP, and homebuilder Lennar's venture arm LenX - was less a fundraise than a verdict. The money is aimed at two channels at once: getting heat pumps to installers and homeowners, and wiring geothermal into new construction at scale.
That second channel is the tell. Current and upcoming projects run from 1,000-plus single-family developments to multifamily buildings with hundreds of apartments. When a builder picks geothermal not for the brochure but because it pencils out cheaper than gas plus AC, the technology has stopped being a statement and started being infrastructure. Three thousand systems are already in the ground.
There is also the matter of timing. Federal incentives now cover a meaningful slice of a geothermal install, state and utility rebates stack on top, and tightening energy codes are slowly making gas hookups a liability rather than a default. Dandelion did not create that tailwind, but it spent years building the unglamorous machinery - drilling capacity, installer training, design software, financing - needed to ride it. A subsidy is only useful to a company that can actually show up and dig. Recognition has followed the work: an Inc. 5000 spot in 2023, a founder on Fast Company's most-creative list, and a cap table that reads like a who's-who of climate capital.
