The Company That Turned Microsoft Teams Into a Full Contact Center

Contact Center with AI for Modern Customer Experiences

If you have ever called a hospital, bought a provincial lottery ticket, or waited on hold with your electric utility somewhere in Canada, there is a fair chance the software routing your call was written in an office park in Markham, Ontario. The company is ComputerTalk. It has been around since 1987, it has never raised a venture round, and most people in tech have never heard of it. Its founder still runs it.

That anonymity is a little unfair, because ComputerTalk has quietly won a technical distinction that its far larger competitors have not. Its flagship product, ice Contact Center, is the only platform certified across all three of the ways Microsoft lets outside vendors plug a contact center into Microsoft Teams - the models Microsoft calls Connect, Extend, and Unify. When Microsoft handed out its Unify certification for Teams Phone extensibility, ComputerTalk was one of five companies in the world to earn it.

01 / WHAT IT DOESThe switchboard, reinvented for the Teams era

A contact center is the machinery behind every "your call is important to us." It answers, it sorts, it routes, it records, it reports. ComputerTalk builds that machinery as software. ice handles interactions across voice, email, web chat, SMS, and social channels, and layers on the classic call-center plumbing - interactive voice response (IVR), automatic call distribution (ACD), skills-based routing, and real-time dashboards - on top.

The interesting design choice is where ice lives. Rather than asking a company to bolt a separate call-center app onto its Microsoft stack, ice can run inside Microsoft Teams, the app those employees already have open all day. Agents take customer calls in the same window they use to message a colleague. The company describes ice as both "Teams native" and "PBX-agnostic," which is a compact way of saying: use it with Teams, use it with your old phone system, or use it while you migrate from one to the other.

Bringing together e-mail, instant messaging, social media, voice communications, and web conferencing is a matter of productivity and competitiveness. Mandle Cheung, Founder & CEO

02 / THE CUSTOMERSWho is actually on the other end

ComputerTalk's customer roster reads like a list of institutions that cannot afford a dropped call: hospitals, credit unions, governments, utilities, and lotteries. Named clients include London Health Sciences Centre, BC Children's Hospital Foundation, Western Canada Lottery Corporation, Sunshine Coast Credit Union, Connexus Energy, the construction firm Aecon, real-estate investor QuadReal, and Newmarket-Tay Power. These are regulated, high-volume, low-tolerance-for-error environments - which is exactly the niche ComputerTalk has spent decades learning to serve.

03 / THE PROBLEMMigration without a leap of faith

Big organizations rarely rip out their phone systems in one weekend. They live for years in a messy middle state - some staff on Teams, some on Skype for Business, some still on an on-premises PBX bolted to the wall. Most contact-center vendors force a choice at the door. ice is built for the in-between: it can support agents on Teams, on Skype for Business, and on a legacy PBX at the same time, so a rollout can happen department by department rather than all at once.

Then there is the compliance problem. A hospital taking patient information or a credit union taking card payments cannot simply route calls through whatever software is cheapest. ice carries the certifications that make procurement officers comfortable - SOC 2, ISO 27001:2013, PCI DSS Level 1, PIPEDA, and HIPAA - and its icePay module lets a caller pay by card inside a live conversation without exposing the number to the agent.

ComputerTalk is the only vendor certified across all three models. Unify certification for Teams Phone extensibility has been earned by just five vendors worldwide.

04 / WHAT SETS IT APARTA twenty-year head start with one partner

Plenty of companies sell contact-center software. Genesys, Five9, and NICE are bigger names; Enghouse, Anywhere365, and Luware chase the same Teams-native corner. ComputerTalk's edge is not size - it is patience. The company became a Microsoft partner in 2005, back when Microsoft's real-time communications product was called Live Communications Server. It then followed that product through every rename and rebuild: OCS, Lync, Skype for Business, and finally Teams. Each migration deepened the integration work, and that accumulated depth is hard for a newer entrant to reproduce in a hurry.

The cloud model and the Microsoft technology platform allows us to quickly deliver powerful, flexible and security-enhanced PCI-compliant contact center services to customers of all sizes, across all industries and all levels of government. Mandle Cheung, Founder & CEO

05 / PRODUCTSOne platform, one prefix

ice is really a family of modules, and someone at ComputerTalk clearly enjoys a naming convention. The card-payment tool is icePay. The softphone is icePhone. The agent toolbar is iceBar. There are iceSurvey, iceCampaign (outbound dialing), iceJournal (recording and transcripts), iceMonitor, iceReporting, and iceDashboard. Even the speech attendant has a name - SayMyName. It is a small thing, but it keeps a sprawling product legible, which matters when you are selling to an IT department that has to explain it internally.

More recently the company folded artificial intelligence into the stack under iceAI Studio: virtual agents that handle routine calls, agent assist that suggests answers in real time, natural-language routing that sends a caller where they need to go based on what they say, automatic transcription and summarization, and a PII redactor that scrubs sensitive data out of recordings. ice also plugs into the systems companies already run - Salesforce, Microsoft Dynamics 365, ServiceNow, Power BI, and the speech-analytics platform Tethr.

06 / THE BUSINESSBootstrapped, and comfortable with it

ComputerTalk sells ice as a subscription - priced per agent - hosted in the cloud, run on-premises, or a hybrid of the two, alongside cloud hosting, custom development, and a reseller channel. There is no funding history to recount, because there is no funding. The company is privately held and has been founder-led since the Reagan administration. Third-party estimates put annual recurring revenue somewhere around the low eight figures, which for a bootstrapped, decades-old B2B software firm is less a headline than a quiet endorsement of the model.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, a provincial health system used ComputerTalk's iceAlert to deliver test results by SMS at scale, and a regional hospital group used it to automate screening for risk factors. The work made ComputerTalk a Microsoft Impact Awards finalist - the kind of recognition that comes from doing something useful under pressure rather than announcing something ambitious.

07 / THE MARKET FITBoring, durable, and hard to dislodge

The contact-center market is loud, and most of the noise comes from the top of it. ComputerTalk sits somewhere more interesting: the trusted, deeply-integrated option for regulated buyers who care more about a call never dropping than about a splashy product launch. Its four stated values - trustworthiness, innovation, friendliness, and collaboration - sound like the sort of thing a company puts on a wall, but they also happen to describe why a hospital procurement team signs a multi-year contract. In a category obsessed with disruption, ComputerTalk's advantage is that it has been reliably in the same place for thirty-eight years, getting slightly deeper into Microsoft's platform every year.
