Biotechnology loves a revelation: the result in a dish, the line on a chart, the molecule that behaves better than expected. Alan Walts has built his career around what happens next. For nearly four decades, he has worked the seam between an idea and the organization required to carry it - a place where chemistry meets budgets, scientists meet boards, and a promising experiment acquires deadlines.
His résumé is long enough to resemble an index. There is MIT, then 27 years at Genzyme, then Advent Life Sciences, followed by a procession of young companies and boardrooms: Aura, X4, Arrakis, PIC, Artax, Zikani, Eloxx, AlphaRose, Neuroelectrics, and now Aleta Biotherapeutics. But the list disguises the more interesting pattern. Walts has repeatedly taken on translation jobs. He has translated research for managers, strategy for scientists, risk for investors, and experience for first-time leaders.
That makes him a particular kind of biotech executive. He is not chiefly known for a single dramatic product launch or a charismatic manifesto. His public career is a record of connective work: choosing a company, assembling its early team, shaping its board, and giving technical ambition enough structure to proceed. It is patient work in an industry that talks breathlessly about speed.
I. The apprenticeshipA chemist learns the whole company
Walts earned his doctorate in chemistry at MIT in 1985, then remained for postdoctoral work in biochemistry with Christopher Walsh. The sequence matters. Chemistry gave him a language for making things; biochemistry pulled that language toward living systems. At Genzyme, where he would spend 27 years, the vocabulary expanded again.
His assignments crossed the usual corporate partitions. He led chemistry and biopolymer research. He served as president of Genzyme Pharmaceuticals. He worked in business and corporate development for the therapeutics unit, initiating deals and new business efforts that Genzyme says led to marketed products. In 1993, he completed Harvard Business School’s Program for Management Development. By the time he took charge of Genzyme Ventures, he had seen a biotechnology company from several angles: the bench, the operating plan, the transaction, and the investment committee.
Even his early patent record shows the practical range. Public filings name him as a Genzyme inventor on work involving water-insoluble derivatives of hyaluronic acid and phospholipid-saccharide conjugates. These are artifacts from a scientist’s chapter, before his name began appearing more often in director biographies than on laboratory inventions.
Running Genzyme Ventures completed the transition without quite severing the scientific root. Venture work rewards a peculiar double vision: seeing what a technology might become while remaining alert to the thousand ways it can fail. Walts was responsible for finding and closing investments and managing a portfolio of direct and fund positions. The molecule remained important, but so did the people, financing, governance, and sequence of decisions around it.
II. The second actBuilding the builder’s portfolio
Walts left Genzyme in 2013 and joined Advent Life Sciences as a Venture Partner. “Left” is slightly misleading. He carried Genzyme’s methods, relationships, and institutional memory into the next phase, while serving as an advisor to its former chairman and chief executive, Henri Termeer, until Termeer’s death in 2017.
At Advent, the recurring assignment was company formation. Walts co-founded X4 Pharmaceuticals and served on its board. He became executive chairman at Aura Biosciences. He co-founded Arrakis Therapeutics, initially serving as executive chairman and director. He took board leadership roles at PIC Therapeutics and Artax Biopharma. Later came Zikani, whose acquisition by Eloxx Pharmaceuticals brought him onto a public-company board.
An Arrakis origin story makes his contribution unusually tangible. The company’s founder, Michael Gilman, has recalled that Advent partner Raj Parekh connected him with Walts, who became “indispensable” in navigating the search for the first team members. On one occasion, a breakfast with a prospective scientific leader progressed to a dinner with Gilman and Walts. Soon after, the scientist joined as a consultant. Capital made the company possible. Deliberate courtship made it operational.

There is a useful correction here to the heroic version of entrepreneurship. A founder does not simply discover the right people by magnetism. Someone makes a list, checks reputations, reads the chemistry in a room, and knows when another conversation is warranted. Early teams have no harmless hires. Every person alters the company’s range and temperament.
Then the loop repeats: evidence changes the plan, the plan changes the financing, and the team changes with the work.
III. The human networkAdvice is cheap. Introductions cost attention.
Walts’s most revealing public observation is about mentorship. He described Henri Termeer as an “aggregator” - someone who not only spoke with people, but made connections among them. It is an unshowy word for a consequential skill. Advice can be delivered and forgotten. A well-judged introduction changes the cast of the problem.
After Termeer died, people he had influenced began talking about how to continue the mentoring, guidance, and relationship-building he had practiced personally. The first idea was modest: an annual dinner. The inaugural Henri Termeer Legacy Dinner in May 2018 honored five fellows and gathered a network of 17 mentors. The response created an obligation. As Walts recalled, “The feedback was so positive, after the dinner, we felt we had to do this again. We had to find a way to continue more formally.”
Walts and Belinda Termeer established the Termeer Foundation in March 2019. Now known as the Termeer Institute, it connects emerging life-science leaders with experienced mentors. Walts serves as a co-founder, board member, treasurer, and mentor. The organization is an attempt to make a personal habit durable without sanding away what made it effective: judgment, generosity, and introductions specific enough to matter.

Networks are usually displayed as quantities: followers, contacts, names in a database. Walts’s version is qualitative. Does a scientist find an operator? Does a new chief executive get access to someone who has already made the expensive mistake? Does the connection lead to another room, another experiment, a company that survives its awkward first year? Aggregation is not collecting people. It is arranging them.
IV. The current experimentA bridge made of biology
In June 2025, Walts joined Aleta Biotherapeutics as Executive Chairman. The company and the Termeer Institute now identify him as Aleta’s CEO. It is a fitting assignment for an executive who has spent his career at interfaces. Aleta develops CAR T-cell engager proteins designed to make cancer cells easier for previously administered CAR T cells to recognize.
The mechanism can be described without a thicket of acronyms. Some tumor cells escape a therapy by losing or reducing the target that engineered immune cells have been trained to see. Aleta’s lead biologic, ALETA-001, binds to one marker on a cancer cell and displays another, increasing or restoring the signal recognized by CD19-directed CAR T cells. It is an off-the-shelf molecular bridge.
The program moved into a Phase I/II trial in February 2024 through a collaboration with Cancer Research UK’s Centre for Drug Development. In December 2025, Aleta and Cancer Research UK announced preliminary findings from the ongoing trial. They reported that the therapy had been tolerable at the tested doses and that four of six patients receiving the lowest doses showed robust CAR T-cell expansion, evidence consistent with the intended mechanism. These were early findings from an ongoing study, not a finished verdict. Additional United Kingdom sites were planned for 2026.
The work joins Walts’s older expertise with a new clinical-stage problem. Aleta needs the familiar things: clear strategy, careful financing, a board that understands the evidence, and a team able to respond when biology declines to follow the slide deck. His job is no longer to run a corporate venture fund or help a founder make the first hires. It is to hold a small company steady while its central proposition meets human data.
V. What compoundsThe long career, properly measured
A four-decade career invites scorekeeping. Count the patents, boards, financings, acquisitions, clinical milestones, and titles. They matter, but they explain less than the transitions between them. Walts began by making and studying molecules. He learned how a large biotechnology company organizes discovery. He learned transactions, general management, and venture portfolios. Then he applied that accumulated range to fragile new companies where no function can safely ignore the others.
He also helped preserve a culture. The Termeer Institute is not a monument in the stone-and-plaque sense. It is closer to a piece of social machinery: experienced people lending attention to leaders who are still learning how to carry scientific responsibility. The structure suits Walts. His public story contains few ornamental flourishes. It is full of rooms made more useful by who has been invited into them.
There is an elegant parallel between the company he now leads and the career that brought him there. Aleta’s technology is designed to create recognition across a biological gap. Walts’s professional specialty has been recognition across organizational gaps: seeing which science needs a company, which company needs a person, and which person needs a seasoned voice on the other side of the table.
The analogy has limits, as all tidy analogies do. Molecules obey forces more reliably than committees. Still, it points toward the durable lesson in Walts’s work. Biotech is built through interfaces. The scientific idea needs the operating plan. The founder needs the board. The junior leader needs the mentor. Progress rarely arrives alone; someone has to make the introductions.
