Consider the fuel receipt. It records a small, completed act: somebody filled a tank. For the person running a fleet, it opens a queue of questions. Which vehicle? Which driver? Was the purchase allowed? Where does the expense belong? The money has moved, but the work has barely started. That gap is a useful way into WEX Brasil Tech, a Brazilian engineering operation helping build the systems that make business payments manageable.
- Brazilian engineers support WEX’s global payment and benefits products.
- The work connects money movement with controls, records and reconciliation.
- A DIO partnership offered 11,310 free scholarships in a disclosed 2025 program.
The geography needs a moment. WEX Brasil Tech’s LinkedIn page lists Portland, Maine, the parent company’s headquarters. WEX’s own Brazil website describes a technology center in Salvador and remote colleagues across Brazil, working alongside teams overseas. The parent’s history begins in 1983; the Brazilian technology services entity was registered in 2020. Those dates describe different beginnings. Brazil’s role is engineering for a global portfolio.
Three pumps, then a bigger problem
Wright Express, the business that became WEX, began with a fleet fueling card accepted at three Portland locations. Its founders, Parker Poole III and William Richardson, had a connection to the city’s older fuel business. In 1986, a Getty Petroleum agreement extended acceptance to 2,200 stations in the Northeast. The original proposition traveled because fleets everywhere faced versions of the same administrative problem.
The company went public in 2005 and adopted the WEX name in 2012. Today its work falls into mobility, employee benefits and corporate payments. The common thread is practical: a payment becomes more useful when it arrives with enough information to explain itself. Brazilian engineers support the products behind those different transactions, rather than a single app for a single local market.

The payment has a second job
In fleets, WEX offers fuel cards, spending controls, tracking and reporting. A manager can use the information surrounding a purchase to investigate spending rather than collecting receipts and hoping the explanation turns up later. For employers and administrators, its benefits products handle enrollment, accounts and payments, including US health savings and flexible spending arrangements. These are specialized workflows, with rules a generic checkout button cannot settle.
Corporate payments make the connection especially visible. WEX offers virtual cards and accounts payable tools that bring payments into existing business processes. Through its developer interfaces, another company can issue virtual cards, process payments and receive transaction notifications. WEX advertises the APIs as free; that statement describes API access, not an assurance that the surrounding commercial payment service has no cost.
Booking.com offers a concrete example of the customer. It first became a WEX client in 2013, and a new long-term agreement took effect in April 2024. WEX is one of its preferred virtual-card providers. The relationship involves paying across currencies, borders and time zones. A traveler sees a reservation; behind it, businesses need a dependable way to settle their obligations and match the records.
11,310 invitations to learn
For a Brazilian developer, the most accessible doorway may be education. WEX and DIO’s End to End Engineering bootcamp covers .NET and C#, databases, quality assurance, Docker and AWS. Its description connects that curriculum to recruiting opportunities, including positions for people with disabilities. The course gives applicants a fairly concrete picture of the work: build, test, package and operate software.

WEX’s September 2025 transparency disclosure reported 11,310 free scholarships through the partnership. It also reported 3,191 women registered and 63 women graduated. Scholarships, completions and hires measure different things. Keeping them separate makes the program more useful to examine. The transferable idea is clear enough: teach the skills your teams use, then let candidates demonstrate them. Selection still happens; training is not an employment guarantee.
The team behind the waiting time
A January 2026 post by WEX’s Mel Betush describes another side of engineering. Teams with low delivery velocity could be stuck with manual regression testing and unstable environments. The account describes a DevEx effort using metrics alongside conversations with engineers, with plans to expand beyond pilots. It is a group-wide account, rather than a claim about one Brazilian team.
“They were burdened by toil.”

The useful management lesson is diagnostic. Before treating slow delivery as an individual shortcoming, look for work that repeatedly stops the whole team. Better tooling helps when the obstacle is testing or infrastructure. It has less room to help if engineers cannot raise concerns or challenge a deadline. WEX’s account explicitly connects team autonomy with the ability to improve quality.
The price of making it look simple
The business earns money in several ways. Parent WEX reports payment-processing revenue, account-servicing revenue, finance fees and other revenue. That makes it broader than a subscription software company. Its 2025 group revenue was $2.66 billion. In July 2026, it reported second-quarter revenue of $753.5 million, up 14.2% from a year earlier. These are parent-company results, not the Brazilian operation’s sales.
+14.2% year over year. 2025 rounded from the reported comparison.
The alternatives depend on the job. Corpay and U.S. Bank Voyager compete in mobility; HealthEquity and Alegeus compete in benefits. WEX’s position combines specialized software, payment infrastructure and distribution through partners. Buyers still have to ask whether the relevant network, integrations and terms fit their business. A small operation with simple expenses may need far less machinery. For companies whose receipts arrive by the thousand, the appeal is easier to understand: fewer transactions that require a person to play detective.
