Wacom's battery-free pen quietly became the default input device for professional digital art - and the invisible layer inside other companies' screens. Here is how a Japanese firm turned one idea about a stylus into a category it still dominates.

There is a good chance you have never bought anything from Wacom, and an equally good chance that most of the digital drawings you admire were made on one of its tablets. That is the strange position this company occupies. It is not a household name. It is a professional-tools name - the sort of brand that lives on the desks of illustrators, animators, retouchers and product designers, and inside devices sold by companies far larger than itself.

Wacom Co., Ltd. was founded in Japan in 1983.
