Nippon Express moved the Mona Lisa. Now it moves the chip factory.

A painting and a semiconductor machine have something awkward in common: neither forgives a careless journey. Nippon Express has built a business around knowing what must never happen in transit.

In 1974, the Mona Lisa went to Japan. Nippon Express handled the transport. It is an excellent detail for a company brochure, but a more interesting detail for a purchasing manager. A painting cannot complain about humidity. A semiconductor machine cannot politely mention that the road is bumpy. Someone has to anticipate the objection before the cargo leaves.

THE STORY IN FOUR STOPS
  • Nippon Express coordinates freight, warehouses, customs and specialist handling.
  • Its art-transport experience illuminates its precision-cargo business.
  • NX Group’s acquisitions reveal the cost of expanding a network.
  • For shippers, the useful starting point is the cargo’s failure conditions.

A painting’s travel agent

The art business began in 1951. The Venus de Milo followed in 1964; the Mona Lisa, a decade later. Today, the group describes dedicated art vehicles with climate control and air suspension. The precautions sound rather lavish until you consider the alternative. A damaged crate is replaceable. Its contents may have quite different views on the matter.

That distinction explains much of Nippon Express. It moves ordinary commercial freight, certainly. It also organizes journeys for goods whose value depends on arriving under particular conditions: pharmaceutical products, precision equipment, factory machinery. The work includes choosing routes, arranging storage, managing customs and coordinating delivery. The truck is merely the most photogenic employee.

There is no lone founder with a garage in this story. Nippon Express was established in 1937 through the pooling of assets from Kokusai Tsu-un and six other companies. Its predecessor network dates to 1872. Reestablished as a private company and listed in 1950, it subsequently expanded overseas. International air forwarding began in 1957; a New York office opened in 1958.

“We carry out our mission; society responds with trust”The employee creed, reproduced in NX Group’s corporate philosophy

The words are solemn. The practical expression is less ceremonial: training, repeatable handling procedures and employees who understand a particular industry. The company started a nationwide driver and forklift operator contest in 2003. Competence occasionally gets a podium.

The expensive inch between systems

Consider a semiconductor factory. Before it can produce anything, equipment must reach the site. Materials must be stored and replenished. Finished goods must leave. A transport provider can win work at each stage, but the awkward moments occur where one stage meets another. A shipment arriving at the wrong time is still the wrong shipment, however magnificent its journey.

NX’s semiconductor offering connects equipment transport, factory operations and outbound distribution. It describes air-suspension vehicles, vibration-dampened pallets, specialist packaging and support around the clock. Warehouses near production sites can hold materials until needed. These are concrete mechanisms for controlling vibration, timing and inventory, rather than reasons to applaud the word “precision.”

Healthcare introduces a different constraint: temperature. The Narita Temperature Controlled HUB obtained IATA’s CEIV Pharma certification in February 2020. Clothing, automotive parts and household moves bring other requirements. Nippon Express’s customers therefore range from manufacturers and retailers to museums and relocating families. The broad menu matters because customers often need several services in sequence.

The business earns money through transport, forwarding, storage and related services. Customers buy a defined movement or a longer logistics relationship; the company offers tailored quotes. Its alternatives include DHL Global Forwarding, Kuehne+Nagel, DSV and CEVA. The sensible comparison is the actual lane and handling requirement. Nippon Express’s distinctive proposition combines its Japanese network with international forwarding and specialist cargo experience.

NX GROUP / FY2025¥2.575tn

Consolidated revenue. The parent group’s total, not the operating company’s standalone sales.

A network is bought; cooperation is earned

In January 2022, the group adopted a holding-company structure and the NX brand. Nippon Express Co., Ltd. remains an operating company beneath Nippon Express Holdings. The distinction matters: acquisitions and consolidated financial figures generally describe the wider group. cargo-partner joined that group in January 2024, expanding its European capabilities.

The earnings did not arrive as expected. At a December 2025 investor meeting, outside directors discussed a sluggish European economy, valuation concerns and limited experience integrating a forwarding company of that kind. They also described an uncomfortable measurement problem: reports of cooperation did not yet give them a clear numerical picture of the contribution to profits.

Their response was specific. The holding company was taking a larger role in integration previously entrusted to regional operations. Acquisition screening had become more selective. Director Tsukiko Tsukahara said, “we must estimate valuations more rigorously.” The lesson is portable: count the benefit of connecting two businesses before congratulating yourself for owning both.

An announced agreement to acquire all shares. These figures do not establish that the transaction has closed.

Expansion continued. The Metro agreement targets contract logistics capabilities in North America. On October 1, 2026, NX and Japan Airlines announced a weekly Boeing 747 freighter circuit linking Los Angeles, Narita, Taipei and Singapore. Its first departure was scheduled for October 3. The service targets growing demand for AI and semiconductor cargo, including oversized equipment.

Borrow the checklist, not the empire

One smaller example is especially useful. Nippon Express and sake maker Gekkeikan redesigned shipments from Kyoto to northeastern Japan using relay warehouses and ferries. Their work received an Ocean Cargo Modal Shift Award in 2020. Driver shortages and emissions concerns changed the transport problem; holding inventory near demand helped make a different route practical.

A shipper can copy the reasoning. Specify what the goods cannot tolerate, then compare routes, storage needs, delivery windows and total cost. Request the handling plan alongside the price. A ferry-based replenishment system needs predictable demand and suitable lead times. A specialist service earns its expense when the consequences of mishandling justify it; uncomplicated cargo may need a simpler arrangement.

Nippon Express’s most persuasive work makes the journey uneventful. The painting reaches the museum. The machine reaches the factory. Nobody admires the absence of vibration. They simply get on with what the shipment was for.
