Thomas Bishop Wants the Humble Battery to Earn Its Keep

After building snowboards, headphones and connected hardware, the Paleblue founder chose a product people tend to notice only when it fails - and made reuse the convenient option.

The ordinary household battery enjoys a peculiar privilege: nobody expects it to improve. It lives in a drawer beside tape, mystery keys and instructions for appliances long gone. It performs its little shift inside a toy or a headlamp, expires at an inconvenient hour, and sends somebody back to the store. Thomas Bishop looked at this ritual and saw a product category that had mistaken familiarity for permanence.

His company, Paleblue, keeps the recognizable cylinders and rectangles but changes the choreography. Each battery contains a lithium-ion cell, onboard management electronics and a charging port. Plug in a cable, wait, return the battery to service. The radical gesture is almost offensively modest: do the same thing again.

Bishop did not arrive at that idea as a battery chemist emerging from a secluded laboratory. He came as a product builder who had spent years where an object’s promises meet factory tolerances, shipping deadlines and customers who do not care how hard the engineering was. His route ran through board sports, headphones and connected consumer hardware. The industries changed. The question stayed put: how do you make a technically complicated thing feel obvious in somebody’s hand?

A career built around belonging

Bishop’s education looks like three people negotiated a single transcript. At Middlebury College he studied physics, geology and English. At the University of Rochester he moved into materials science, mechanical engineering and precision optics manufacturing. Then came a practical Mandarin certificate at the Taipei Language Institute. Science supplied the questions, engineering supplied the constraints, language supplied access, and the English degree may have prepared him for the founder’s least avoidable factory: explaining what any of it means.

Snowboarding gave the learning somewhere to land. Bishop had taught the sport since he was twelve, competed, and worked in shops. He joined the industry through K2 and Burton, then moved into development and manufacturing. Asia became home for much of the next eleven years. Factory days could be long, but the geography offered compensation: he has recalled direct flights to Hokkaido and powder days in Japan. It is difficult to invent a more product-manager sentence than “all of the factory days” being made worthwhile by using the product in exceptional snow.

That closeness mattered. A snowboard is not merely a composite of materials. It belongs to a culture with sharp opinions about performance and credibility. Bishop has said he tries to work on things important to the community around him at each stage of life. Board sports gave him his first professional version of that community.

Music came next. Bishop knew Skullcandy’s founder and joined as the headphone company expanded, first establishing its Asian office and team. The scale grew quickly. Bishop remembers production reaching roughly 100,000 headphones a day. He later returned to Park City and ran the product organization from Utah.

The lesson was larger than volume. Headphones were becoming public objects. The iPod and smartphone had pulled music out of the house, which meant headphones needed fashion, mechanical design, electronics, acoustics and human factors to cooperate. Bishop had also worked on air and as a performance DJ, so the object sat at another useful intersection: manufacturing complexity on one side, a community he understood on the other.

The second charge is the product

After Skullcandy, Bishop joined the young hardware company Owlet in 2015 and led operations through its early scale. He describes that period as mission-led work and credits the experience with giving him confidence to start a company. By then, another small constituency had taken over his house: battery-hungry toys. As a new parent, he found himself feeding ever more cells into tracks, gadgets and the domestic carnival of blinking plastic.

Nearly everything else in modern electronics had become rechargeable. Household batteries remained arranged in alkaline battalions at the store. Bishop and his eventual co-founders, Steven Warren and David Kizer, saw both an engineering opening and a behavioral one. Lithium-ion cells had become smaller and more available. Charging electronics could fit inside standard battery forms. USB could remove the special dock that had made older rechargeables feel like a hobby.

The decisive moment came on reuse. Bishop has described charging the first batteries and putting them back to work. He had not travelled anywhere, purchased anything or thrown anything away. The first discharge proved that the battery functioned. The second charge proved that the routine could change.

This distinction explains Paleblue better than any sermon about waste. The company’s environmental case depends on repeated usefulness. A rechargeable battery left forgotten in the drawer has accomplished little. One that charges quickly, fits familiar devices and delivers predictable power can displace purchases without requiring the user to adopt a new identity.

Paleblue was founded in 2018, raised about $430,000 through crowdfunding in 2019 and shipped its first orders in early 2020. The lineup grew across AAA, AA, C, D, 9V and CR123A formats. Charging indicator lights made invisible progress visible. USB-C replaced the private kingdom of proprietary chargers. In a January 2026 interview, Bishop said the company had sold about 3.5 million batteries.

Mission has to survive the test bench

Bishop is careful about reducing battery performance to a single number. Capacity matters, but so do voltage behavior, device compatibility, charging time, safety systems, self-discharge, reliability and cost over repeated use. A battery is a compact negotiation among chemistry, electronics and whatever device waits at the other end.

This systems view now stretches beyond the camping lantern. Paleblue has worked with the Defense Innovation Unit and partners including South 8 Technologies, NanoGraf and Vigilant Engineering on a next-generation platform for demanding applications. The company also found a natural bridge back to music through Ernie Ball. Co-branded AA and 9V cells entered an ecosystem of wireless packs, active instruments, pedals and touring equipment where a dead battery is less a nuisance than a professional betrayal. NAMM included the line in its 2026 Add-Ons & Accessories Best in Show selections.

The partnership offers a tidy loop in Bishop’s own career. The former headphone executive returned to musicians with a different piece of backstage infrastructure. This time, the battery itself had become the performance product.

In July 2026, Paleblue launched the redesigned Voyager series. It introduced a discharge curve intended to behave more like alkaline cells so devices can read remaining power accurately and continue running without premature shutoff. Capacity increased across formats. USB-C remained. Bishop’s public standard for the update was plain: a reusable battery succeeds only if it works better than the disposable object it hopes to replace.

The useful humility of a small object

Founders are encouraged to describe their companies in planetary language. Paleblue’s name openly borrows that perspective, but Bishop’s preferred unit of ambition is smaller. He says he tends to think about company size in batteries sold and the disposables those products might replace. Revenue remains real; payroll has not yet accepted avoided alkaline cells as currency. Still, the metric keeps the mission attached to an object somebody can count.

It also resists the soft-focus version of sustainability. Durability has to endure years of charging. Electronics have to manage heat and output. Packaging has to travel and recycle. Manufacturing has to become more circular over time. Bishop has discussed the eventual possibility of production closer to customers in the Americas and Europe, paired with maturing lithium-ion recycling so recovered material can return to manufacturing. It is an aspiration rather than a finished loop, but it follows the same logic as the product: bring the thing back.

The broader lesson in Bishop’s career is not “follow your passion,” a phrase so polished by repetition that it can no longer grip a surface. His version is more useful: choose a community, learn its objects, and accept responsibility for the unromantic details. Snowboard bindings need materials and factory discipline. Headphones need acoustics, fashion and scale. Rechargeable batteries need the courage to be boring in exactly the right shape.

Paleblue’s argument fits comfortably in a closed hand. The future does not always arrive as a new object. Sometimes it is the old object, made accountable for what happens after the first use. Charge it. Put it back. Let it earn the space it occupies in the drawer.
