Three hundred websites. One year. A small marketing team. For the senior living provider that brought this assignment to SmartBug Media, the arithmetic was unpleasant. The original plan involved building sites individually. Then executives announced that every community needed to be online by year-end. The deadline changed the engineering question: why keep building the same machinery three hundred times?
- SmartBug connects marketing campaigns with CRM, sales, and customer service.
- Its acquisitions added e-commerce, paid media, and systems integration.
- The lesson: inspect the handoff before buying more traffic.
01 / The deadline that changed the design
SmartBug built a generator using HubSpot’s HubDB database, reusable templates, and a serverless function. Community details populated the pages automatically. The agency estimates that the approach avoided $300,000 in production costs and 6,000-9,000 hours of manual work. Core development took an estimated three to four months. Preparing the underlying community data was still time-intensive.
Those are estimated savings, not the project’s price. The distinction matters. A tool that creates pages quickly can require considerable preparation. The transferable idea is to separate the information that changes from the structure that repeats. That approach makes sense when hundreds of locations share a design; a collection of unrelated websites presents a different problem.
02 / An agency buys the missing pieces
SmartBug began with Ryan Malone in 2007. Its current business stretches from demand generation and content to web development, revenue operations, CRM migration, training, and customer success. HubSpot is the organizing platform: the place where a prospect’s details, a salesperson’s actions, and a service team’s records can become connected.
Expansion followed an intelligible sequence. American Discovery Capital made a growth equity investment in February 2020. SmartBug bought Worth eCommerce in 2021, adding e-commerce capabilities; Chair10 Marketing in May 2023, extending paid media; and Canadian agency Globalia in October 2023, adding systems integration and digital transformation expertise.
Read together, those purchases suggest a strategy: own more of the work between first contact and an established customer relationship. An agency can write an excellent campaign and still lose the result in a disconnected database. Buying technical depth gives SmartBug more ways to address that problem.

03 / Even the agency had a routing problem
Consider SmartBug’s own contact form. Sales prospects, journalists, and people pitching projects arrived through the same static experience. The form could not distinguish their intentions. Visitors encountered questions that did not necessarily apply to them. This was a small design decision with consequences for everyone downstream.
The team already used Typeform on smaller projects. It applied branching questions to the contact page and automated inquiry routing. Typeform’s April 2026 customer story reports 40% more form completions, 75% less form-building time, and a 24% reduction in sales follow-up time. These are vendor-published results from one implementation, rather than a forecast for every client.

For another marketing team, the experiment is refreshingly modest: identify the different reasons people contact you, ask relevant questions, and assign each inquiry an owner. Then measure completion and response time separately. A larger lead count tells you little if nobody follows up.
04 / The customer who needs time
SmartBug’s customers include manufacturers, software businesses, healthcare organizations, financial services firms, and education providers. Senior living makes its operational argument particularly clear. A family considering care is unlikely to behave like someone buying a replacement phone charger. The decision involves time, reassurance, and several people.
WesleyLife, an Iowa senior living provider, needed a way to maintain contact across that longer decision cycle. SmartBug implemented HubSpot Marketing Hub, built post-tour nurturing, and connected activity with the WelcomeHome CRM. Messages could reflect location and care needs. The published case study reports that lead-to-resident close time fell by more than 89 days in the first 12 months.
“Let’s just say our marketing stack had some... vintage charm.”Amy Hutchins, WesleyLife chief marketing officer
The result is useful because it concerns a business outcome beyond a website visit. It also illustrates the dependency: someone must maintain accurate lead status, useful content, and functioning integrations. Automated follow-up inherits the quality of those inputs.
05 / A broader business needs clearer names
In January 2026, SmartBug launched Point Success Media as the new brand for its digital advertising division. The announcement said the division managed advertising for more than 500 service businesses and was a preferred partner for more than ten franchise networks. Ownership, client contracts, and services were unchanged by the rebrand.
CEO Adam Bleibtreu described a business that had grown beyond its HubSpot identity. The new structure gave advertising its own signboard, alongside SmartBug’s marketing and CRM work and Globalia Digital’s technical services. This is a useful admission about growth: adding capabilities can make a company harder to explain.

06 / The bill includes participation
SmartBug sells professional services through scoped projects and ongoing retainers. Its published AI strategy playbook is priced at $5,000-$7,500; custom AI agent builds start at $1,500 per agent. Training is listed at $5,000-$10,000 or more. These are specific service prices, not a quote for a complete marketing program.
The agency’s readiness framework examines platform, process, people, and policy. It also recommends continued agent optimization. That puts an unglamorous requirement beside the AI offering: clean data and clear responsibility. A buyer should define one workflow and a measurable baseline before expanding the assignment.
There is an organizational bill, too. SmartBug asks clients to supply feedback on an agreed schedule and involve the agency in business planning. If approvals stall or the client cannot share operational context, the engagement loses the information needed to move forward.
07 / Distance requires maintenance
Malone built the company around remote work. Today its culture includes quarterly certification days, social stipends for colleagues to meet, and the company gathering called SmartBugapalooza. Those practices give a distributed team repeated opportunities to learn and build familiarity.
Bleibtreu became CEO in July 2025, while Malone remained chairman. HubSpot subsequently recognized SmartBug as its 2025 North American Partner of the Year. Within a market that includes fellow partners such as New Breed and Huble, SmartBug’s case rests on combining marketing execution with implementation depth. The practical buying question is specific: which connection in your business needs fixing first?
