Humanly Wants to Interview Everyone Before Breakfast

Applications arrive at machine speed. Humanly gives recruiting teams a way to answer at the same pace - then puts people back in charge when judgment matters.

Humanly is for the recruiter who opens a role on Monday and finds 600 applications waiting by Tuesday. It is for the restaurant operator hiring across 160 locations, the hospital trying to screen nurses between shifts, and the talent team whose calendar has become a game of Tetris played with real livelihoods. The platform handles the repetitive front half of hiring - outreach, questions, qualification, interviews, reminders and scheduling - so a human can arrive where judgment and persuasion actually count.

That distinction matters. AI hiring products are easy to describe badly. “A robot picks your staff” is both alarming and, in Humanly’s case, incomplete. Recruiters define the questions and criteria. The software conducts structured conversations by chat, phone, voice or video, records the answers, produces summaries and scores, and moves qualified people into the next step. A responsible team reviews the evidence and owns the decision. The useful part is not synthetic charisma. It is that the candidate who applies at 9:07 p.m. can get an answer at 9:08.

Why it exists: the pile got taller

Founder and CEO Prem Kumar came out of Microsoft CRM work and later met co-founder Andrew Gardner at employee-engagement company TINYpulse. Bryan Leptich joined as CTO. Their starting observation was borrowed from sales: no competent marketer would pay to attract a million prospects, then knowingly ignore nine out of ten. Yet high-volume recruiting did roughly that. The team began building in 2018, entered Y Combinator’s Winter 2020 batch, and initially focused on a conversational screen at the top of the funnel.

The original product has since swallowed much more of the hiring stack. Humanly now sells an AI Recruiter, AI Interviewer, AI Notetaker, Talent CRM and its own applicant tracking system. Acquisitions helped widen the map: Sprockets, Qualifi and HourWork joined in 2025, bringing frontline sourcing, phone screening and post-hire tools. Anthill followed in April 2026, adding communication, feedback and operational support for deskless workers. The destination is no longer “chatbot beside your ATS.” It is one operating layer from first hello through onboarding and retention.

LIVE-ishThe candidate gets a face, the recruiter gets their morning back, and nobody has to pretend 7:30 a.m. was a convenient phone-screen slot.

What actually happens after “Apply”

A candidate can enter through a job board, career site, imported list, old ATS record or Humanly’s advertised database of more than 600 million profiles. The AI Recruiter answers common questions, checks must-haves such as location, availability or certification, and can send nudges over SMS and email. Qualified applicants can move directly to scheduling or to a structured interview. The interview format can match the job: low-friction chat, a phone or voice screen, or video when communication and presentation are relevant.

On the other side, the recruiter sees transcripts, summaries, scores and a candidate record rather than a new inbox full of recordings. Humanly’s ATS adds jobs, stages, notes, job-board publishing, source reporting, drop-off analysis and location alerts. Teams keeping an established ATS can connect systems including Greenhouse, Workday, iCIMS, Lever, SmartRecruiters and SAP SuccessFactors. Greenhouse’s own support documentation says Humanly can send applications, screening answers, interview results, notes and scores back to the candidate profile. That writeback is a small detail with enormous practical value: automation that creates a second clerical job is not automation.

The score is a prompt to look, not permission to stop thinking

Humanly’s scoring interface is deliberately legible: evaluation areas, numeric ratings and written rationales. That is preferable to a mysterious overall match percentage, but buyers should still interrogate it. Ask who writes the rubric, whether weights can be changed, how an override is recorded, what evidence sits behind each score, and whether a candidate can request an alternative process. Then test accents, noisy rooms, assistive technology, non-linear work histories and awkward but capable interviewees. A system can be consistent and still consistently measure the wrong thing.

SHOW YOUR WORKGreen bars are cheerful. The paragraph underneath is where the grown-up conversation begins.

This is also regulated territory. Employers, not only vendors, remain responsible for employment decisions. In New York City, covered automated employment decision tools require a recent independent bias audit, public information about that audit, and candidate notice. Other jurisdictions have their own rules. Humanly says it maintains SOC 2 Type II compliance and offers transparency, recruiter control and audit-ready records. Those are inputs to governance, not a substitute for it.

DEMO HOMEWORK: bring one real requisition, five awkward candidate records, a duplicate applicant, an accommodation request and a consent withdrawal. Ask the salesperson to run them live.

The evidence is promising - and mostly vendor-shaped

Humanly reports up to eight-times-faster hiring, more than 20 recruiter hours saved per week, average candidate experience scores of 4.8 out of 5, and retention improvements in some deployments. The most concrete recent example is Novant Health: 427 recruiter hours saved in 30 days, more than 1,000 AI interviews per month and a 34-hour average interview turnaround. Older case-study headlines report Mutual of Omaha cutting time-to-screen from five days to five hours, and DK Security taking five days out of time-to-hire.

Independent user sentiment is positive but not a blank cheque. G2 listed 129 reviews and a 4.8 average when checked, with reviewers frequently praising responsiveness, candidate experience and reduced manual work. One enterprise talent leader called the platform a “meaningful improvement” to front-end screening and described the Humanly team as responsive and collaborative. Criticism includes previously contacted profiles resurfacing in sourcing results, implementation complexity around unusual workflows and the absence of public pricing. Reddit discussion is thinner and more skeptical, especially from candidates uneasy about AI interviews. That skepticism deserves product attention, not dismissal.

Who should shortlist it - and who should keep walking

Shortlist Humanly when volume is the pain. The sweet spot is recurring hourly or frontline recruitment across many roles or locations: healthcare, restaurants, retail, logistics, hospitality, security, manufacturing and field services. It also suits a centralized talent team that needs consistent questions, after-hours availability and clean ATS records. If five recruiters each conduct the same 20-minute screen 40 times a week, the arithmetic becomes persuasive quickly.

Keep walking if you hire ten highly specialized people a year, if every opening demands a bespoke portfolio discussion, or if your team cannot name the criteria it wants automated. A small employer may find the sales process, custom implementation and undisclosed price heavier than the problem. Humanly can accommodate skilled hiring, but its sharpest story is the busy conveyor belt, not the rarefied search for one marine-battery chemist.

Pricing: bring a spreadsheet and a stopwatch

Humanly does not publish standard tiers, per-seat rates or a free plan. Pricing is by custom quote. In May 2026 the company said it was evolving toward outcome-aligned options such as pay per candidate and pay per hire. That could make cost track value more closely, but it also makes comparison harder. Request a fully loaded three-year number: implementation, integrations, messaging, interview volume, data migration, support, overages, renewals and exit costs. Then divide by completed qualified screens, interviews booked and hires retained, not chatbot conversations.

The buying test is wonderfully unglamorous. Measure the current hours between application, first response, completed screen, scheduled interview and decision. Run a pilot in two comparable locations. Watch completion and no-show rates, recruiter time, candidate satisfaction, downstream performance and demographic pass-through. If the platform only makes the top of the funnel faster while managers remain slow, you have purchased a quicker traffic jam.

Our verdict

Humanly has grown into a credible high-volume recruiting system because its pieces connect. A conversation can become a structured interview, a score, an ATS note, a calendar event and later a re-engagement campaign without a recruiter carrying the data between tabs. The acquisitions and 2026 funding make the ambition larger still: a pool of already interviewed candidates, candidate coaching, outcome-based service and post-hire retention.

The tradeoff is equally clear. More of the hiring journey inside one automated layer means more workflow power, more sensitive data and more decisions that demand scrutiny. The right customer will treat Humanly as a tireless coordinator with excellent paperwork. The wrong customer will treat a colorful score as an oracle. Buy it for responsiveness and throughput. Keep people accountable for the judgment.
