Perceptyx wants your employee survey to earn its keep

For years, companies have asked employees what is wrong. Perceptyx is building a business around the more awkward question: what happens on Monday morning after the answers arrive?

At nearly 50 hotels, HVMG faced a problem that would not appear on an executive dashboard: many frontline employees had no work laptop. A survey link sent to the wrong place is an invitation nobody receives. Before the hospitality company could learn anything useful about its workforce, it had to solve the rather unglamorous business of reaching it.

The story in four points
  • Perceptyx sells the whole feedback cycle: listening, analysis, action support and learning.
  • Its audience is the large employer: complicated workforces, multiple locations and managers who need help using the results.
  • Acquisitions supplied new tools: crowdsourcing, digital coaching and behavioral nudges.
  • The useful test is visible change: a completed survey is merely the beginning.

HVMG used QR codes posted at its properties, text messages and email. In Perceptyx’s account of the project, HR director Mandisa Brown also credits suggested actions built into the platform. The lesson is pleasingly practical. Ask through a channel people can use. Give the person receiving the answers something manageable to do.

Brown reported that properties with better participation or results also had stronger profitability and guest satisfaction. That is a reported association, rather than evidence that software alone produced the difference. Still, it explains why this market exists. Employers want employee feedback to become an operating decision, preferably before another good employee leaves.

01 / The expensive pause after asking

Perceptyx makes cloud software for employee experience: engagement surveys, lifecycle feedback, 360 assessments, crowdsourcing, analytics, coaching and learning. HR teams buy it; managers and employees supply much of the information and carry out the work it recommends. A manufacturer, hospital system or multinational retailer needs to hear from people with very different jobs, schedules and access to technology.

The awkward moment arrives after the results. A manager receives a report, recognizes a familiar problem and must decide what to change while still doing the rest of the job. A chart is patient. A team usually is not.

The company’s 2026 listening report gives this pause a shape. Its benchmark data show 71% of employees saying survey results are shared, 59% saying action plans are created, and 51% saying improvements followed. These are reported perceptions, not three measured stages through which the same group was tracked.

Results shared 71%
Plans created 59%
Improvements reported 51%
A twenty-point distance between hearing the results and feeling an improvement. Perceptyx benchmark data published in its 2026 report; an illustrative comparison of employee perceptions.

That difference is the company’s commercial argument. The current People Activation System places three product families on a shared data model. Discover gathers and interprets feedback. Activate helps people respond. Develop builds and assesses understanding. The names read like instructions, which is probably sensible in a business where everyone already has enough nouns.

02 / Sixteen years before the first outside cheque

In a 2025 retrospective, co-founder John Borland names the original quartet: himself, Jack Morehouse, Dave Belcher and Greg La Bonte. They founded Perceptyx in 2003 to help organizations listen to employees. This was an enterprise survey business long before the current enthusiasm for workplace AI.

When TCV invested in August 2019, Perceptyx said it had been profitable and entirely self-funded since inception, with client retention above 95%. The investment amount was undisclosed. Sixteen years of paying its own way is a useful detail: the company had already learned how to sell to institutions before outside capital arrived.

The economics today remain enterprise software economics. Buyers enter a sales conversation and configure products and services rather than picking a cheap survey from a public checkout page. In-house employee experience specialists can help design the listening strategy and interpret results. The price a buyer should assess includes the software, the chosen services and the internal time needed to act.

Culture Amp and Qualtrics occupy neighboring territory. Perceptyx’s particular pitch combines large-workforce listening, behavioral interventions and consulting expertise. That is a positioning choice, not a claim that competitors lack action tools. A sensible comparison asks how well each system handles a buyer’s actual workforce and the work that follows feedback.

03 / Buying the missing verbs

The 2021 acquisitions of Waggl and CultureIQ widened the listening apparatus. Waggl let employees suggest ideas and vote on them; CultureIQ brought a research-based approach to assessing culture. Asking the workforce for solutions creates a different conversation from asking it to score management.

In February 2022, Perceptyx bought Cultivate, whose opt-in digital coaching used leaders’ communication data to generate personalized insights. In August 2023, Humu followed, bringing science-based nudges. The announcement described a stubborn problem: already strained middle managers bore the burden of creating, executing and measuring post-survey plans.

This is the documented change in emphasis. Perceptyx kept buying ways to support the person expected to respond. Listening generated the signal; coaching and nudges addressed the human bottleneck.

“The challenge facing organizations is not a lack of more insights.”

John Borland · Activate launch, April 2024

Activate launched in April 2024, incorporating Humu’s technology. Today it suggests priorities and action plans, offers coaching conversations and delivers behavioral prompts through tools such as Teams, Slack and email. The premise is modest: a useful reminder at the right moment may make a planned behavior more likely to happen.

The company’s customer documentation adds a useful qualification: available features vary by deployment, and on-demand coaching is opt-in. A product family name does not mean every customer receives every feature. Procurement should get specific about who gets what.

04 / A hospital finds the leaders worth copying

At Norton Healthcare, expansion through acquisitions and new facilities in 2023 and 2024 created a need to reproduce effective leadership across a larger system. Its Culture Champions program used survey results, platform usage and leadership-rounding measures to identify people whose teams were doing well.

Norton selected 22 Employee Experience Culture Champions and nine Safety Culture Champions, then involved them in shaping initiatives. Teams led by Culture Champions recorded 90.5% favorable engagement. Their reported intent to leave was 22% lower than peers’. That last measure is a survey response about intention, not a counted reduction in departures.

Norton’s employee experience program made effective leaders advisers to the wider organization.

The example is valuable because its mechanism is visible. Find the leaders getting results, examine their habits, involve them and spread what works. Norton made leadership rounding a system-wide requirement for 2025. Perceptyx and other partners helped with measurement; the hospital supplied the management decisions. Neither side should quietly disappear from the explanation.

05 / The certificate has some explaining to do

Ross Wainwright became CEO in April 2025, with Borland remaining on the board. In September, the company announced a reimagined Discover and an AI agent suite. The movement toward action continued into the learning budget.

The current Develop launched on May 14, 2026. It turns content an organization already owns into adaptive, one-to-one learning conversations. AI agents deliver the material and evaluate comprehension against defined objectives during the exchange. Its proposed improvement is to give employers evidence of understanding beyond a course-completion record.

Feedback → action → capability → fresh feedback

On September 29, 2026, Perceptyx launched Anywhere. It combines connections through APIs and MCP, AI evaluation capabilities and workforce-specific modeling. Organizations can bring employee intelligence into AI systems they use or build. Further capabilities are planned through 2027, so the announcement describes an architecture still expanding.

That introduces a useful second question. After asking whether managers act on feedback, ask whether the AI interpreting it understands the employees. A polished summary can be a very confident misunderstanding.

06 / A method small enough to use

There is something readers can borrow without buying the platform. Choose one priority, agree two specific actions and schedule follow-up conversations. That focused approach appears in Perceptyx’s listening guidance. Add HVMG’s practical insistence on accessible channels, and Norton’s habit of learning from effective leaders already inside the organization.

The conditions matter. Managers need time and authority to change the thing employees identified. Employees need a credible reason to answer honestly. A nudge may help someone recognize a colleague; it cannot, by itself, supply an understaffed ward with another nurse. Better interpretation is useful only if someone can make a decision with it.

Perceptyx has built its business around the interval between an employee answering a question and noticing a difference. Its acquisitions and new products keep lengthening the list of things it can do in that interval. The employee’s test remains wonderfully short: did anything change?
