The human brain holds roughly 86 billion neurons and trillions of connections. For most of medicine's history, surgeons and neurologists planned around an average - a textbook brain. Omniscient Neurotechnology was built on a simpler, more stubborn idea: your brain is not average, and the map should be yours.
Founded in Sydney in 2019, Omniscient - stylized o8t - applies machine learning to standard MRI scans to reconstruct the brain's networks, the electrical connections that carry speech, movement and thought. The output is a connectome: a personalized, navigable map of how one particular brain is wired.
That work used to belong to elite research labs and expensive imaging protocols. Omniscient's bet was that the data hospitals already collect - a routine MRI - contains enough signal to build these maps, if the software is good enough. The company built two platforms to prove it.
The first, Quicktome, is for the operating room. It gives neurosurgeons a picture of the pathways they most want to avoid damaging, before the first incision. The second, Infinitome, is for researchers studying how diseases like Alzheimer's, epilepsy and schizophrenia rewire the brain over time.
The company is led by CEO Stephen Scheeler, a former Facebook Australia and New Zealand chief, alongside co-founders who bring the clinical and mathematical firepower. Together they have raised roughly US$124 million and pushed connectomics out of the journal and toward the bedside.
