At GoTo Foods, the company behind Cinnabon and Auntie Anne’s, a marketing question came down to furniture. Customers could scan QR codes at the register or at a table. Both placements seemed sensible. Only one gave people somewhere to sit.
Kochava’s case study says table placements produced stronger engagement for certain brands. The team adjusted its distribution. Across the SmartLinks-enhanced experience, in-app engagement rose 19.5% month over month in the May-June 2023 measurement period. That is a reported correlation, rather than proof that moving a sticker caused the increase. Still, the finding is wonderfully concrete: before spending more to reach customers, check where you have put the invitation.
- Kochava connects marketing touchpoints to installs, purchases, and engagement.
- SmartLinks makes links and QR codes measurable across app and web journeys.
- Its expansion into AI workflows brings a familiar question: what did the outcome cost?
The question that became a company
Kochava began in 2011 because app clients kept asking Charles Manning’s team which advertising actually brought people in. The team knew mobile and gaming. What clients lacked was a useful feedback loop between acquiring a user and discovering whether that person stayed, engaged, or spent money.
Manning had previously built PLAYXPERT, a gaming technology business whose technology was licensed to Razer. Kochava grew from the work that followed. Its initial expertise was attribution: matching a conversion to an earlier marketing interaction so a buyer could compare channels on common terms.
The company kept its engineering base in Sandpoint, Idaho. Its stated philosophy, “Life 2.0,” puts location choice alongside meaningful work. Downtown serves as the company’s campus; skiing and the lake supply part of the recruitment pitch. Advertising’s plumbing gets built somewhere people choose for the outdoors.

A click needs a destination
Consider the ordinary awkwardness of clicking an advertisement for something inside an app. A person who already has the app needs the right screen. Someone else needs an app store, then a route back to the original content. A broken handoff wastes the interest the advertisement created.
SmartLinks handles that routing while preserving measurement. Marketers can use links in paid campaigns, email, social posts, or physical QR codes. An install can then connect to later events, such as a purchase. GoTo Foods used that machinery to distinguish placements inside its restaurants.

Act
A simplified journey. Measurement depends on integration, permissions, and available signals.
The useful thing to copy is the experiment’s resolution. Give each placement an identifiable link, define the event that matters, and compare what follows. Counting scans alone could reward curiosity without purchases. A restaurant seeking repeat orders needs to follow the journey far enough to see repeat orders.
Free to start. Paid to look closer.
Kochava sells to advertisers, agencies, app businesses, and publishers. Its customer material ranges from restaurant portfolios to subscription apps and hotel franchises. The recurring problem is scattered evidence: each media partner has its own dashboard, while the customer crosses several channels.
Foresyte, a budgeting and lifestyle-planning app, started with Free App Analytics to consolidate campaign measurement, including TikTok and Apple Search Ads. It later moved to Foundation for more configurable attribution, longer retention, and more detailed reporting. Its case study reports subscription growth above 63% month over month and increased app installs over 60 days. These are customer-story results, with no guarantee another app will reproduce them.

The subscription ladder sells increasing access and control. Enterprise adds tools such as raw-data queries, custom data pipelines, and configurable fraud prevention. Marketing mix modeling carries separate, tailored pricing. Buyers should also account for engineering integration and the work of agreeing which events represent business value.
Credit is easier than causation
AppsFlyer, Adjust, Branch, and Singular occupy neighboring territory. Kochava’s pitch spans mobile, web, connected television, fraud prevention, and broader measurement methods. A useful comparison asks which channels and data exports a team needs, then tests those requirements against each product.
There is a deeper limitation. Attribution can assign credit to an interaction without establishing whether the customer would have converted anyway. Kochava’s 2023 acquisition of Machine Advertising added Always-on Incremental Measurement, or AIM. Modeling and incrementality methods address a different question: how much business did the marketing add?
This distinction matters when identifiers are unavailable or customer journeys are incomplete. More dashboard precision cannot repair missing permission or badly defined events. Nor does a successful restaurant placement automatically tell a travel app how its users behave.
The boundary around the dots
Kochava’s data-marketplace activities also brought regulatory scrutiny. In 2022, the Federal Trade Commission alleged that its location-data sales could expose visits to sensitive places. A stipulated injunction filed June 25, 2026 resolved the action involving Kochava and Collective Data Solutions. The defendants neither admitted nor denied the allegations.
The order restricts disclosure of sensitive location data, with a narrow exception requiring a direct consumer relationship, affirmative express consent, and a service the consumer requested. It also establishes supplier-assessment and sensitive-location controls. The commercial value of connecting dots does not erase the interests of the person those dots describe.
Now measure the machines
StationOne extends Kochava into AI workspaces and connected marketing workflows. In September 2026, it introduced workspaces for Adjust and AppsFlyer, plus connectors for those providers, Branch, and Singular. Its potential audience now includes teams using competing measurement products.
“Marketers don’t operate in a single-vendor world”Charles Manning · September 2026
On October 22, Kochava announced enterprise controls for routing tasks among models, allocating budgets, and reporting AI usage against business tasks. Audience processing can run through code instead of sending every record through a language model. The practical ambition is recognizable: help a team see what it is paying for, then change the decision. The restaurant table was an early, smaller version of that same question.
