Craig Dowley Markets Robots by Counting What Moves

After two decades turning technical products into measurable demand, Craig Dowley has arrived at Teradyne Robotics with a practical thesis: automation earns attention when it works in the messy world, and marketing earns trust when it can show the numbers.

A box has shifted. A pallet is damaged. The aisle that looked clean in the simulation now contains a human, a hand truck and the ordinary debris of a working warehouse. Craig Dowley likes this moment. It is where a polished robot demonstration collides with the place that must actually use the robot - and where his kind of marketing begins.

Dowley, the Chief Marketing Officer of Teradyne Robotics, walked the floor at MODEX in Atlanta in April 2026 and came away focused on variability. In his account of the show, the interesting machines were not the ones performing the neatest tricks. They were the systems that could recover when the environment stopped cooperating: a cobot that found a moved box, a pallet jack that fused LiDAR and vision, a mobile manipulator that moved among jobs without demanding fixed infrastructure.

His phrase for the old assumption was the “perfectly programmed grid.” His argument was that its era had ended. Real floors are cluttered, dimensions vary, and useful automation has to respond. It is an observation about robotics, but it also explains Dowley’s career. For more than two decades he has worked between intricate technology and measurable commercial behavior. He does not merely want an audience to understand a machine. He wants to know what happened after they understood it.

The measurement habit

Dowley’s path runs through a particular corridor of American technology: the engineering tools and factory systems that make other products possible. At SolidWorks, he worked around 3D design software. At MathWorks, home of MATLAB and Simulink, the subject was technical computing. Cognex brought machine vision. IPG Photonics brought fiber lasers and optical systems. Vimaan used computer vision to inspect warehouse inventory. Teradyne Robotics now puts collaborative arms and autonomous mobile robots on the floor.

The nouns changed. The operating question stayed stable: can marketing produce a result that sales can recognize?

On his LinkedIn profile, Dowley publishes a compact ledger of career performance. He says that during his years at Cognex, marketing-originated sales rose from $86 million in his first year to more than $375 million four years later, contributing to $1.2 billion in marketing-originated pipeline over five and a half years. He reports that return on marketing investment rose from $6.24 to $21.43 per dollar spent. At SolidWorks, he says inbound lead volume grew 40 percent in two years and sales-qualified leads rose 92 percent. At Vimaan, he says search generated more than 90 percent of sales-qualified leads.

Those are his figures, presented publicly as project results rather than audited company disclosures. Their precision still tells us something important. Dowley chooses to describe marketing through pipeline, bookings, leads and return, not impressions detached from a buying process. The scorecard is part of the worldview.

A marketer in the patent file

Two issued patents make that measurement habit tangible. Dowley is a named inventor on a 2011 patent for producing sales leads from the way people use an on-demand software trial. A second, issued in 2014, covers testing and error reporting for software-based marketing and sales. Both came out of the world of Dassault Systèmes SolidWorks.

This is an unusual corner for a marketing executive to occupy. The patents are not about a slogan or a campaign. They concern the machinery behind the buyer’s experience: what a trial reveals, how a system detects a problem, and how usage can become a commercial signal. Long before “product-led growth” hardened into startup vocabulary, Dowley’s name was attached to systems that connected the product encounter to the sales process.

The same instinct appeared in a different form in 2013, when Dowley joined a Gartner panel on content marketing as Cognex’s director of web marketing and brand. Asked about governance, he warned that control must not stifle innovation, real-time response or relevance. Measurement, in his version, does not mean bureaucratic stillness. A feedback system is useful because it lets the operator change course.

Learning the invisible factory

Dowley earned his bachelor’s degree at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Public biographies do not specify his field or graduation year. The clearer education came through the sequence of products he was asked to explain.

Engineering software is demanding material for a marketer. The user often knows more about the application than the person writing the campaign. A claim has to survive contact with engineers who can test it. Machine vision and photonics add a physical layer: optics, speed and reliability appear not as abstract features but as consequences on a production line. Warehouse computer vision adds people, inventory records and operational disorder.

At Vimaan, where Dowley served as vice president of marketing, he wrote about the gap between a warehouse management system and the shelves it described. Software might maintain a record of where goods should be, but the building contains the evidence of where they are. Vimaan’s pitch used cameras and computer vision to reconcile those worlds. A 2024 MODEX innovation entry named Dowley as the contact for StorTRACK, a system whose customer reportedly cut a week-long cycle count to an hour and doubled inventory accuracy.

The Odense handoff

In September 2025, Teradyne Robotics appointed Dowley as CMO. The group sits above two recognizable automation brands: Universal Robots, which makes collaborative robot arms, and Mobile Industrial Robots, which builds autonomous mobile robots. His remit joined products that manipulate things with products that move them.

Dowley spent his first week at the group’s corporate headquarters in Odense, Denmark. In a post announcing the job, he described arriving at the center of the robotics operation, meeting the leadership team and preparing to work across the worldwide marketing and sales organization. The connections mattered. Jean-Pierre Hathout led the robotics group. Kevin Dumas led MiR. Justin Brown, a former Cognex colleague, served as chief commercial officer. Dowley’s new role reunited the measurement-minded marketer with a familiar sales partner inside a broader automation system.

The corporate task is easy to state and harder to execute: tell a coherent story across collaborative arms, autonomous mobility and AI-enabled automation while preserving the practical value of each product. A cobot bolted beside a machine tool and an autonomous pallet jack solve different problems. Together, they can also suggest a factory in which work moves between fixed stations and changing routes.

Against the clean demo

Dowley’s MODEX essay gives the clearest view of how he intends to tell that story. He was skeptical of the distance between humanoid-robot excitement and near-term operational return. He pointed instead to mobile cobots that combine a proven arm with a mobile base, and to pallet systems trained on real and synthetic images. Availability, deployability and return mattered more than resemblance to a person.

This is less a rejection of ambition than a demand for a shorter distance between promise and use. It also mirrors his professional vocabulary. A qualified lead is closer to a sale than a page view. A trial behavior is closer to product truth than an ad impression. A robot recovering from a crooked pallet is closer to customer value than a perfect loop under exhibition lights.

His style can be blunt. The opening of his LinkedIn biography reads, “While other marketers make excuses, I make things happen.” Colleagues describe the mechanism underneath that line in more collaborative terms. Recommendations on his profile emphasize his habit of joining marketing to sales execution, working across product and leadership teams, and turning data into action. The personality that emerges is direct, practical and impatient with ornamental metrics.

There is a broader idea hiding in Dowley’s progression from software trials to factory floors. Technical marketing is often described as translation, as though the marketer simply replaces hard words with easy ones. His record points to a more active craft. The marketer decides which evidence matters, builds a path for capturing it, and gives the organization a way to learn. The story and the instrument panel are part of the same system.

What the numbers are for

That helps explain why Dowley’s most useful lesson is not one of his large numbers. It is the sequence beneath them. Start with the real environment. Find the operational friction. Explain how the technology responds. Connect that response to an outcome a buyer values. Then watch what moves.

The loop leaves room for surprise. In a warehouse, the surprise may be a damaged pallet. In marketing, it may be a search query that exposes a concern the campaign did not anticipate. Dowley’s old Gartner advice applies to both: governance should not prevent a real-time response. The system earns its keep when it adapts.

Teradyne Robotics has given him a large version of that problem. Collaborative robots and mobile systems carry years of industrial engineering, but the category around physical AI is still being argued into shape. Buyers are asked to sort practical automation from theatrical possibility. Dowley’s job is to make the distinction visible without sanding away the technical detail.

Back on the trade-show floor, the clean demo remains tempting. It photographs well. It loops on schedule. But the moved box is more revealing. It gives the machine something real to solve and the marketer something honest to measure. Craig Dowley has built a career around that exchange: technology meets disorder, evidence comes back, and the next move gets a little smarter.
