The guest WiFi login is nobody's favorite piece of software. It arrives between a person and the thing they want, usually while they are balancing a shopping bag, a coffee or a train timetable. Cloud4Wi looked at that awkward little checkpoint and saw a company. If a connection could securely recognize a visitor, collect permission, remember a return and pass useful context into a retailer's existing systems, WiFi could stop behaving like plumbing and start behaving like a business channel.
That is the broad job of Cloud4Wi, an enterprise software business founded in Pisa in 2014 by Andrea Calcagno and Davide Quadrini and now headquartered in New York. Its cloud platform sits above compatible WiFi equipment. It handles branded guest onboarding, access policy, Passpoint and OpenRoaming, audience analytics, integrations and location-aware engagement. More recently, it has added multi-dwelling-unit WiFi, cloud network access control and an AI engine called Hedy.
The company's own scale numbers are large: more than 300 million mobile users connected across 70,000-plus locations in over 150 countries. The customer roll includes Prada Group, Guess, Campari Group, Carmila, Gruppo FS, Boisset Collection and Opera San José. They are not buying faster radio waves. They are buying a more controlled and useful moment around the connection.
The wedge was already in the ceiling
Cloud4Wi began as a spinout from WiTech, a Pisa wireless specialist. The original pitch mixed cloud management with a marketplace for advertising, games, geo-chat and digital coupons. The language was very 2014; the underlying observation has aged better. Public WiFi creates a small but meaningful exchange between a physical venue and the person standing inside it.
The company raised $4 million from United Ventures that year and pushed into the United States. In 2016 it presented Volare, a location analytics and marketing product aimed at retailers, restaurant chains and shopping centers. An $11.5 million Series B followed in October 2017, co-led by Opus Capital and United Ventures, bringing publicly announced funding to $15.5 million. The money was earmarked for product, sales, channel partners and machine-learning expertise.
Cloud4Wi's important architectural choice was to avoid demanding a wholesale equipment swap. The software works with supported networks from Cisco, Meraki, HPE Aruba, Ruckus and others. That makes “no rip-and-replace” more than a pleasant feature. It is a sales strategy. A buyer can preserve the expensive access points already mounted across hundreds of sites and add a common software layer above them.

What the product actually does
For a shopper, the visible piece may be a localized splash page asking for an email address and consent. Behind it, Cloud4Wi can check whether that person is already known, keep duplicate records out of the database, apply access rules and send new information into a CRM or marketing platform. Location events can then help a brand understand visits or trigger a timely message. Passpoint can install a secure profile so the device connects automatically next time. OpenRoaming extends that idea across a federation of participating networks.
There are now three formal product lines. Guest WiFi serves public-facing venues and marketing use cases. MDU WiFi automates resident and tenant onboarding, including private network access and move-in or move-out changes. Cloud NAC applies identity-based controls to employees, contractors, guests and devices. In July 2026, Cloud4Wi added a native Microsoft Entra ID integration, automated group-to-policy mapping and a cleaner sponsored-access flow.
Hedy, the AI layer, is meant to shorten the distance between a question and the platform's data. An operator can ask for the busiest venues, connection failures, opt-in trends or suspicious login activity in plain language and receive charts or exportable lists. It also searches product documentation. Cloud4Wi says sensitive configuration actions require explicit human approval. That boundary matters: a helpful report is one thing; an unsupervised change to network access is quite another.
The pilot that changed the rollout
Guess offers the most copyable implementation story. The retailer wanted seamless store connectivity, cleaner first-party profiles and a better view of in-store behavior. Rather than begin everywhere, it piloted Cloud4Wi in more than 90 European stores. The pilot revealed which onboarding elements worked; only then did the project move to the United States and expand globally.
The rollout used branded, localized WiFi pages and a consent-based subscription flow. The resulting email, phone and behavioral data moved into Guess's marketing stack. Existing subscribers could receive a different experience, limiting duplicates and making the interaction less clumsy. Cloud4Wi reports that the deployment reached roughly 700 stores, collecting more than 35,000 profiles a month and revealing more than one million real-time moments a year.

Boisset Collection exposes a different failure mode. Its physical Cisco network was not the first problem. The old guest-WiFi workflow could not automatically send data to the CRM and offered limited customization across the wine group's properties. Cisco and Cloud4Wi describe a replacement that preserved the existing hardware, introduced branded portals and offered a 10 percent discount in exchange for a phone number after an initial signup. In its first six months, the program onboarded more than 6,500 visitors, acquired 3,000 email addresses and reported a 7 percent purchase conversion among new contacts.
The quiet truce between IT and marketing
Cloud4Wi occupies a useful seam in the enterprise. Marketing wants consented identity, clean profiles and moments when a message might be welcome. IT wants consistent access, auditable policy, fewer tickets and no surprise hardware migration. A successful deployment gives both sides enough of what they want. That is also how Cloud4Wi differs from a basic captive-portal vendor, a standalone location-analytics tool or a traditional NAC appliance: it is trying to span all three jobs in one cloud layer.
That span creates competition from several directions. Purple, Aislelabs, GoZone WiFi, MyWiFi Networks and Beambox overlap in guest access and marketing. Cisco ISE, Aruba ClearPass and FortiNAC are established security alternatives. Hardware platforms increasingly bundle portals, analytics and policy features. Cloud4Wi's defense is breadth plus neutrality: support several hardware families, integrate with the systems customers already use, and make one deployment relevant to more than one budget owner.
The commercial model follows that enterprise shape. Cloud4Wi sells subscription software directly and through resellers, managed service providers and technology partners. Its partner program explicitly combines recurring SaaS, recurring services and an optional hardware sale. That channel matters because the installer or service provider already managing a venue's network can add Cloud4Wi without introducing another physical stack. It also lets the company reach many industries with the same product core: a winery wants better consented contacts, a station operator wants dependable public access, an apartment manager wants automatic resident provisioning and a corporate office wants identity-backed policies. The screens change; the connection, identity and orchestration machinery underneath can be reused.
Cloud4Wi does not publish a standard enterprise price. Contracts are quote-based, and the real implementation cost depends on location count, compatible hardware, integrations and services. The observable economic argument is avoided replacement cost: when the installed network is supported, the access points stay put.
The playbook - and its limits
There are five moves worth borrowing. Enter through a neglected but frequent workflow. Preserve the customer's sunk investment. Run a geographically bounded pilot. Offer people an intelligible value exchange for their data. Finally, automate the handoff into a system that can act on it. A beautiful login page that ends in a spreadsheet is merely prettier administrative work.
The pattern does not work everywhere. Passpoint and advanced onboarding require compatible network capabilities. A venue with little repeat traffic may not benefit from identity or loyalty features. Weak consent design can produce a large but unusable database. If the CRM is messy, no owner is responsible for follow-up, or the offer gives visitors no reason to share information, Cloud4Wi cannot manufacture a customer strategy. Network data also brings privacy and governance obligations that grow with scale.
The company's newest expansion into Cloud NAC is logical but not automatic. Guest access and employee access share identity, onboarding and policy primitives, yet security buyers have different expectations, incumbent tools and tolerance for risk. Hedy faces a similar test. Its value will be measured in resolved incidents, trustworthy answers and reduced operator effort, not in the presence of a chat box.
Still, Cloud4Wi's twelve-year arc is instructive. It did not abandon the captive portal so much as keep asking what else the moment of connection could support. Marketing data led to integrations and location experiences; secure profiles led to roaming; identity and policy led toward NAC; years of platform data created a plausible opening for an AI assistant. The screen everyone wanted to dismiss became the front door to a much larger product.
