The quiet machinery behind the next useful tap

CleverTap wants every tap, swipe and abandoned cart to help a brand decide what to do next. Its bet is that customer data, messaging and AI work better in one operating system than in a crowded stack of disconnected tools.

A phone buzzes. A bank wants you to finish an application. A delivery app says dinner is nearby. A streaming service has found a new episode with suspiciously good timing. The tiny rectangle on the screen looks simple. Behind it sits an argument involving identity, consent, probability, copy, timing, channel, cost and whether sending nothing might be the smarter move.

CleverTap sells the machinery for that argument. The San Francisco-headquartered software company helps consumer brands collect behavioral signals, understand them and act across push notifications, email, in-app messages, the web, SMS, WhatsApp and RCS. Its customers include banks, retailers, airlines, restaurants, media services and game studios - businesses where an install is cheap compared with a lasting habit.

The company calls itself an all-in-one customer engagement platform. The phrase is broad because the job is broad. A marketing team can inspect a funnel, group people by what they did, build an automated journey, test two versions of a message and watch the result without passing the work through five separate systems. Product and growth teams can use the same behavioral record. The practical goal is less abstract: retain more of the customers a business already paid to acquire.

A decision engine wearing a messaging hat

Calling CleverTap a notification tool is like calling a kitchen a place where plates appear. Delivery is the visible edge. The harder work comes earlier: matching events to a person, preserving a useful history, recognizing a pattern and choosing what should happen next.

Imagine a shopper who browses running shoes on Monday, adds a pair on Tuesday and leaves when shipping appears. A blunt system sends a coupon immediately. A more careful one notices that the customer usually buys on Friday, prefers email, has already ignored two discounts and lives near a store with the shoe in stock. CleverTap is built to let a marketer turn those facts into a segment or rule, run an experiment and measure whether the intervention produced a purchase or merely trained the customer to wait for coupons.

The engagement loop
ObserveCollect app, web, purchase and profile events.
UnderstandBuild segments, funnels, cohorts and predictions.
DecideChoose an experience, offer, channel and moment.
LearnMeasure the outcome and feed it back into the loop.
Four beats, many drums. The customer sees a message. The platform sees a loop that should get less clumsy each time around.

Underneath is TesseractDB, which CleverTap unveiled in 2022 as a database purpose-built for customer engagement. Conventional marketing systems often keep a limited window of history or push older data into another warehouse. CleverTap’s pitch is that a long behavioral memory should remain available for quick segmentation and analysis. That matters when “visited twice this week” is less revealing than “returns every winter, buys only at full price and stopped after the last app redesign.”

One workbench, three kinds of AI

The product spans four large capabilities: customer data and analytics, experimentation, personalization, and campaign orchestration. Around them sit delivery channels, developer SDKs and newer tools. Product Experiences lets teams change and test parts of an app or website without waiting for a full release. Promos, launched after CleverTap acquired rehook.ai in 2025, pulls coupons, points, cashback, vouchers and gamified rewards into the same engagement loop.

CleverAI adds the industry’s unavoidable two letters, but its structure is more useful than the label. Predictive tools estimate churn, conversion likelihood or the best time to contact someone. Generative tools, including the Scribe assistant, help draft and adapt campaign copy. Agentic tools are meant to choose and optimize actions toward a goal. In plain English: one model guesses what may happen, another writes, and another decides what to try.

What teams can steal

Start with one measurable behavior. Keep a control group. Limit channel frequency. Write down the reason for every segment. A sophisticated platform cannot rescue a vague objective.

What teams can break

More context can improve relevance, but it can also make a message feel invasive. Consent, data minimization and a clear escape hatch belong in the campaign design, not in a later review.

This arrangement narrows the distance between seeing and doing. In a fragmented stack, analysts export an audience, marketers import it elsewhere, channel tools apply different rules and results return days later. Each handoff can make the audience older and the accountability fuzzier. CleverTap’s difference is not that every individual feature is unavailable elsewhere. It is that behavioral analysis and multichannel action share a real-time system.

A relay race with customer data. This conceptual chart shows why consolidation appeals: every baton pass is another place to lose speed or context.

The customer is a habit, not a campaign

CleverTap’s natural customers are mobile-first or digitally active brands with recurring behavior to study. An airline wants the second booking. A game publisher wants tomorrow’s session. A bank wants an application completed and an account used. A subscription service wants the next renewal. The platform is used by marketing, lifecycle, CRM, product, growth and data teams because none of those outcomes belongs neatly to one department.

Recent company materials name more than 2,000 brands, including TD Bank, Burger King, Paytm, Levi’s, IKEA, Decathlon, Vodafone, Domino’s, Jio, Carousell, Zomato, StockX and Emirates NBD. The breadth is part of the sales story. Customer behavior changes by category, but the operating pattern - observe, decide, act, learn - travels well.

CleverTap makes money through subscriptions. Its plans run from Essentials to Advanced and Cutting Edge, with pricing linked to customer volume, data usage, capabilities and add-ons. A documented entry point starts at $75 per month for up to 5,000 monthly active users, while larger customers negotiate contracts. This creates a classic SaaS alignment: as a customer’s audience and use of the platform grow, so can CleverTap’s revenue.

A crowded market and a specific wedge

Customer engagement is busy territory. Braze, MoEngage, WebEngage, Iterable, Insider and OneSignal approach parts of the same problem. Salesforce and Adobe bring large enterprise suites. Amplitude and Mixpanel begin from product analytics. Twilio, customer data platforms, email services and homegrown warehouses can be assembled into a custom stack.

Analytics first

Understand the behavior

Product analytics tools are strongest when the question comes before the campaign.

Channel first

Deliver the message

Email, push and communications tools emphasize reliable reach and channel depth.

Suite first

Connect the enterprise

Large marketing clouds trade simplicity for breadth, governance and installed reach.

CleverTap’s wedge has been the combination of mobile depth, behavioral analytics and retention. It came from India’s mobile-first market, expanded through Asia, the Middle East and Latin America, and established offices across North America and Europe. Its acquisition of Leanplum in 2022 added customers and expertise in gaming, subscription and on-demand apps. The same year, a $105 million Series D led by CDPQ gave it more room for geographic and product expansion.

The company’s founding story is pleasantly unpolished. Sunil Thomas, Anand Jain and Suresh Kondamudi had worked together at Network18. They began in Mumbai in 2013 under the name WizRocket, acquired a first customer before the product’s public launch and changed the brand to CleverTap in 2015. Jain had helped create Burrp, an early Indian restaurant discovery service. Kondamudi had built complex event-processing systems. The eventual product joined those instincts: consumer behavior on one side, infrastructure on the other.

The best notification is sometimes no notification. Relevance includes restraint. The operational lesson

The difficult promise of an “experience of one”

In 2026, Gartner positioned CleverTap as a Leader in its Magic Quadrant for Personalization Engines. CleverTap describes its destination as an “experience of one” - individualized engagement at scale. The phrase captures both the opportunity and the tension. A useful reminder can feel like service. The same reminder, built from data a customer did not realize was being joined, can feel like surveillance.

Software cannot settle that boundary for a brand. It can provide consent controls, security, regional hosting, frequency limits and experiments. The operator still chooses the objective. Optimize only for a click and the system will find clicks. Optimize for a durable relationship and the work becomes slower, more interesting and harder to fake. Holdout groups matter. So do unsubscribes, complaints and the quiet signal of an app deletion.

That is where CleverTap fits now: between the torrent of customer behavior and the small decisions that shape a relationship. Its expansion from analytics and messages into AI decisioning, product experiences and loyalty suggests that the category is moving toward a broader operating system for customer lifetime value. Competitors are moving there too. The winner will not be the company that can send the most. It will be the one that helps a brand know what is useful, prove it worked and recognize when to stop.
