In a lab in Boston's Seaport District, Allonnia is chasing a deceptively simple idea: that the same biology used to program cells can also clean up the mess industry leaves behind. The company was the first to spin out of Ginkgo Bioworks' Ferment Consortium, launching in October 2020 with $40 million and a mandate to attack waste and contamination problems that chemistry alone has struggled to solve.

Its most visible product is SAFF - Surface Active Foam Fractionation - a water-treatment technology that removes up to 99.99% of regulated PFAS, the class of “forever chemicals” now under tightening regulation across the United States. SAFF, created by EPOC Enviro and distributed by Allonnia in North America, works without chemicals or adsorption media. It uses rising air bubbles to lift PFAS out of contaminated water and concentrate them into a low-volume stream that can be destroyed.

That approach has been deployed at military bases, landfills and industrial sites. In its first two years operating in North America, SAFF raised Allonnia's PFAS treatment capacity to more than 160 million gallons of water - a figure the company likes to cite because it is measured in gallons, not slideware.

But Allonnia has been widening its aim. The same instinct for selective separation that removes contaminants from water can also recover value from rock. Under the banner of “critical materials biotechnology,” the company built D-Solve, a biological process that dissolves problematic minerals from ore to deliver cleaner, higher-value concentrates. By 2026 it had demonstrated the process inside a working North American nickel mine, compressing a natural dissolution process that takes years into one measured in hours.

That dual focus - forever chemicals in water and critical minerals in ore - is what makes Allonnia unusual. Two problems that sound unrelated share one core idea, and the company is betting that biology is the common thread. In December 2025 investors agreed, extending its Series A by more than $20 million and pushing total funding past $100 million.
