One inbox for every channel, and AI for the conversations nobody wants twice

One inbox for every channel, and AI agents built to handle the conversations nobody wants to answer twice.

A customer messages a company on a Tuesday afternoon. They pick WhatsApp, because that is where the rest of their life already lives. On the other side, a support agent is toggling between an email client, a chat widget, a phone, and two social inboxes, trying to remember which conversation they already answered. That gap - between how customers want to talk and how companies are set up to listen - is the whole reason Trengo exists.

Founded in 2017 in Utrecht, the Netherlands, Trengo builds what it calls an omnichannel customer engagement platform. In plainer terms: it takes every channel a business uses to talk to customers - WhatsApp, email, live chat, SMS, Instagram, Facebook, voice - and pours them into one shared inbox. Support and sales teams work from a single screen instead of five. Then, on top of that inbox, Trengo runs AI agents designed to handle the conversations that repeat.

The company is deliberate about which conversations those are. Its own numbers put the figure at up to 84% of repetitive chats that AI can close without a human touching them. That leaves the harder, stranger, more human queries for the people who are actually good at them.

Customer delight always wins. Trengo's operating principle

01 / The problemChannels multiplied faster than teams could keep up

The uncomfortable math of modern customer service is that channels keep multiplying while headcount does not. A decade ago, support meant a phone line and an email address. Now a mid-sized retailer might field questions on WhatsApp, Instagram DMs, a website chat bubble, Facebook Messenger, SMS, and email - often about the same order. Each channel has its own login, its own notification sound, its own way of losing context.

Trengo's answer is consolidation first, automation second. Every message lands in one inbox with the customer's history attached, so an agent who picks up a WhatsApp thread can see the email exchange from last week. Teams add internal notes, tag each other, and hand off without the customer ever seeing the seams.

02 / The betMessaging-first, when the incumbents were email-first

Trengo's founders - Patrick Meutzner, Marcel van de Weerd, and Igo Trampe - built the product around a channel that legacy support suites treated as an afterthought: WhatsApp. The reasoning is simple enough to fit on a sticky note. WhatsApp messages get opened roughly 98% of the time. Marketing email is closer to a fifth of that. If that is where customers actually read, that is where support should be fluent.

Being messaging-native from the start is the thing that separates Trengo from tools like Zendesk and Intercom, which grew up around the support ticket and later bolted messaging on. Trengo became an official WhatsApp Business Solution Provider in 2022, which lets its customers send and receive on the channel without stitching the integration together themselves.

SMS~90%
Live chat~60%
Email~20%

03 / The productsFrom a shared inbox to autonomous agents

The platform has grown in layers. At the base sits the Omnichannel Inbox, the shared workspace where messages from every channel collect. Around 2023, Trengo added AI Automation - AI that translates messages, summarizes long threads, and drafts replies, plus workflow automation for routine requests.

More recently the company pushed into agents. AI Agents handle repetitive conversations across channels on their own, escalating to a human when a query steps outside what they know. AI Journeys, a no-code builder, resolves frequently asked questions before they ever reach the inbox - Trengo markets it as delivering roughly 5x faster resolution. And Trengo Voice extends the same automation onto the phone line, the channel most teams dread.

04 / The customersRetailers, hotels, and Porsche dealers

Trengo's roughly 3,000 customers cluster in the mid-market - teams large enough to feel the pain of scattered channels, small enough to have no appetite for a six-month enterprise rollout. They span retail, ecommerce, hospitality, automotive, and travel. Named users include the rental firm Europcar, electronics maker OPPO, photo service Pixum, the Van der Valk hotel group, discount retailer Zeeman, and Pon's Porsche dealer group.

05 / The businessCharging by the conversation, not the seat

Trengo sells software the way most B2B SaaS companies do - by subscription - but with a twist worth noting. Instead of pricing purely per seat, its plans bundle a set number of users and a set number of conversations, then charge for overage. When an AI handles a conversation, there is a small per-conversation surcharge on top. WhatsApp, Voice, and SMS carry their own per-usage fees.

The published tiers run from Boost at around €299 a month on annual billing, to Pro at around €499, up to a custom-priced Enterprise plan. The effect is that a customer's bill tracks the volume of conversations they actually run, not just how many people they hired - a model that fits messaging-heavy teams better than a flat per-seat license.

06 / The backstoryThree years, no funding, then a $36M check

The part of Trengo's history that founders tend to fixate on is the beginning. The company ran for roughly three years and grew to about fifteen people on no outside capital at all. Only in 2020 did it take its first money - a €1.75M investment from Peak Capital. A year later, in September 2021, Insight Partners led a $36M Series A, with Peak returning.

That sequence - build something real and capital-efficient first, raise big second - is the opposite of the burn-first playbook, and it is a large part of why the round landed when it did. By 2022 the team had crossed 100 employees, still headquartered in Utrecht.

07 / The fieldWhere Trengo sits among the giants

The customer service software market is crowded and top-heavy. Zendesk wins large enterprises with complex, multi-brand SLA requirements and the budgets to match. Intercom leans into SaaS and B2B, where conversations happen in-app and behavior-triggered messaging matters. Freshdesk brings deep ticketing. Front, Gorgias, respond.io, and HubSpot Service Hub each carve their own slice.

Trengo's position is narrower and clearer: the messaging-first inbox for mid-market teams whose customers are already on WhatsApp and Instagram. It is not trying to out-enterprise Zendesk. It is trying to be the tool a growing retailer or hotel group reaches for when email-era support software stops matching how their buyers actually behave.

It is not trying to out-enterprise the incumbents. It is trying to fit the teams the incumbents were never shaped for.

Whether that gap holds as the giants ship their own AI agents is the open question. What Trengo has going for it is a product built around messaging and automation from the start, a capital-efficient culture, and a customer base that keeps sending it more than a hundred million conversations a year to learn from.
