Australia has more rooftop solar per person than anywhere on Earth. That is a triumph and a headache at once: the grid was built to push power one way, from big stations to homes, and now millions of homes push power back. SwitchDin exists to make that reversal manageable.
The company, founded in Newcastle in 2014 by Dr Andrew Mears, builds two connected things. The first is Stormcloud, a cloud platform that monitors and orchestrates distributed energy resources - the industry term for small, scattered assets like solar arrays, home batteries, EV chargers and controllable loads. The second is the Droplet, a small internet-connected controller that sits at a site, optimises that one system, and reports to Stormcloud as a kind of “virtual inverter.”
The trick that makes it work is translation. Every inverter and battery brand speaks a slightly different dialect. Mears realised early that clever control algorithms were useless if they could not talk to the hardware already bolted to people's roofs. So SwitchDin built the plumbing first: a common language that lets mismatched equipment be commanded as if it were one machine.
With that layer in place, a utility can do things that were previously impractical - run a self-sufficient microgrid, spin up a virtual power plant, or enforce a “dynamic operating envelope” that lets more solar onto a constrained network without destabilising it. The unglamorous middleware is the point.

When a neighbourhood floods a feeder with solar, voltages rise and networks historically respond by refusing new connections. SwitchDin's answer: give operators real-time visibility and control so they can say yes instead. In Horizon Power's remote regions, that flipped refusals to zero and let 5+ MW of rooftop solar onto the network.
Many rivals are hardware makers whose software favours their own kit, or DERMS vendors focused on the utility control room. SwitchDin sits deliberately in the middle - brand-agnostic, standards-based, and equally at home on a single roof or across dozens of microgrids. A decade of Australian deployments is its moat.
