Company / The audience business

Stirista sells the audience. Then connects the dots.

An email can win the open-rate contest and lose the sale. Stirista has built a business around the gap, connecting customer identity, email and digital advertising in one system.

The rival’s emails were doing beautifully. In a comparison described by Stirista, an automotive advertiser’s competing supplier recorded an average open rate almost 15 percentage points higher. If you were watching the inbox dashboard, you might have picked the winner right there. Then someone counted the cars.

The short version
  • Stirista connects audience data, identity matching, email and digital advertising.
  • Its bet: fewer handoffs between identifying a prospect and reaching one.
  • The lesson to borrow: judge acquisition by additional customers, with a comparison group.

Stirista says its campaigns produced 440% more incremental new vehicle purchases than the competitor’s, with an 11-times return on advertising spend for new vehicle sales. The manufacturer and rival remain unnamed in the published case. Treat the result as a company-reported example. Still, it poses a deliciously awkward question for anyone buying advertising: which number were you trying to improve?

The inbox scoreboard missed the showroom. Company-reported incremental new purchases, indexed to competitor = 100. A 440% increase equals 5.4 times the baseline. Absolute sales volumes are not shown.

The useful part was the plumbing

The work behind that result sounds less glamorous than an advertising pitch. Stirista adapted files to the brand’s requirements, cleaned audience data, excluded households already counted as customers, established holdout groups, and supplied reporting for matching responses to sales. These are the chores that make a claim about acquisition worth examining.

They also explain the company. Stirista helps brands and agencies identify audiences and run campaigns against them. It sells data, identity matching, email execution, programmatic advertising and services. Its customers include marketers in automotive, retail, financial services, telecommunications and B2B. An agency can bring a client problem; an internal team can bring a customer file. Both need an audience they can actually reach.

The distinctive choice is ownership of the connecting machinery. Stirista combines an identity graph with its own email service provider, or ESP, and demand-side platform, or DSP, for buying digital advertising. Its argument is operational: keeping these pieces together reduces the work of translating an audience from one vendor’s system into another’s.

A person has several screens

Consider a hypothetical retailer with repeat customers, abandoned shopping carts and a prospect list. Those groups should receive different treatment. StiristaOne combines first-party records with the company’s identity graph, third-party data and behavioral insights, letting marketers enrich records and build segments in one workspace.

The email platform supports acquisition, win-back and loyalty campaigns. The DSP activates audiences across connected television and digital inventory, with reporting and AI-assisted bid optimization. StiristaLink connects business and consumer identity signals, helping B2B advertisers reach decision-makers beyond a work email address. The unifying idea is continuity: the audience remains connected as the channel changes.

Scale supplies the raw material. Stirista states that its consumer data covers 247 million U.S. consumers and 121 million households, with more than 400 attributes for targeting. These are coverage claims, rather than a promise that every campaign can reach every record. The practical question is whether the people a particular brand needs can be matched and activated.

Orange shirts before outside money

Ajay and Candice Gupta founded Stirista in 2009. In an account republished by the company, early budgets did not stretch to flights or elaborate trade-show booths. They drove from San Antonio to events as far away as Boston and New York, wearing bright orange polo shirts to get remembered.

In June 2020, Stirista raised $13 million in growth equity led by Wavecrest Growth Partners, with Dennis Ainge participating. It was the company’s first outside equity financing. The money was intended to support acquisitions, leadership expansion and its customer data technology. The decision was to accelerate a business already operating, rather than fund an untested opening act.

That year also forced a practical change of direction. As the pandemic disrupted physical retail, Stirista shifted its own marketing attention toward ecommerce and telecommunications companies. Its account says the adjustment helped it meet revenue goals. The useful detail is the customer mix: when one market paused, it looked for buyers whose needs were moving elsewhere.

Buying the missing pieces

The acquisition strategy kept developing. In January 2025, Stirista announced the additions of creative agency Magnetik and data marketing company Andrews Wharton. In July 2026, it acquired Alesco Data, adding consumer data, first-party enhancement and customer intelligence expertise. Paul Theriot continued leading Alesco within the combined business.

A separate April 2026 collaboration with NIQ connects aggregated shopper intelligence with Stirista’s audience design and activation. Purchase-based insights can inform whom a consumer brand targets across email, CTV and digital. Together, these moves show the market position Stirista is pursuing: a provider able to define an audience, reach it and help interpret what happened afterward.

Copy the experiment

Commercially, Stirista combines data licensing and enrichment with platform access, campaign execution and managed services. A buyer’s calculation must include data, media and the people running the work. Scope matters more than a platform label.

The approach needs usable identity matches, appropriate permissions and enough conversions to evaluate results. A very narrow audience or weak customer records can limit both reach and measurement. Connecting more channels also demands discipline about who should be excluded.

The portable lesson is the auto campaign’s design. Suppress existing customers when testing acquisition. Keep a holdout. Match the campaign to purchases. Agree on the outcome before the first send. Those habits help any team ask a sharper question when an impressive open rate arrives: did we find an extra customer?
