The Feedback Company That Grew Up Slowly, On Purpose

How a bootstrapped survey tool from Herndon, Virginia quietly grew into an experience management platform serving 100,000 customers - and why it still refuses to hide its best features behind an upsell.

In a software category built on giant funding rounds, six-figure contracts, and billboards at airports, Sogolytics is the company that did almost none of that. It sells surveys - or at least it started there - and it grew for more than a decade on customer money instead of venture money. Somewhere along the way it stopped being a survey tool and became something bigger, and most of the market did not notice until the customer count crossed six figures.

The company you now call Sogolytics spent its first nine years as SoGoSurvey. It was founded in 2013 in Herndon, Virginia by brothers Hamid and Suhail Farooqui, with a plainly stated goal: build a survey platform that produced serious analysis at a price a normal budget could absorb. That framing sounds modest. It turned out to be a wedge.

01 / What it actually doesFeedback in, decisions out

Strip away the acronyms and Sogolytics does one thing: it helps an organization ask people questions and then figure out what the answers mean. The people are usually customers or employees. The questions arrive as surveys, forms, polls, quizzes, and assessments. The meaning comes out the other end as dashboards, sentiment analysis, and - more recently - AI-written action plans that rank what to fix by effort and impact.

The homepage compresses this into three words: Turn feedback into growth. It is a tidy line, but the more revealing detail is what sits underneath it - a platform that has quietly absorbed the jobs of a research team, a reporting tool, and a program manager.

02 / Who uses itSchools, hospitals, and the unglamorous middle

Sogolytics's customer list leans toward organizations that hold sensitive data and cannot afford to guess: K-12 school districts, universities, healthcare practices, government agencies, financial firms, nonprofits, and academic researchers. It is not the flashy startup crowd. It is the institutions that get audited.

The case studies read like small operational thrillers. Bryan ISD centralized multilingual surveys across every stakeholder group. Foxborough Public Schools reported outpacing national safety benchmarks by a wide margin using a communication strategy rather than new hardware. A data-science consultancy, Namaste Data, scaled from 50 recipients to 70,000 and folded ten separate tools into one account. And Virginia Physicians for Women, an OB/GYN practice, used AI-powered surveys to lift its Google reviews by roughly 600% and push all six locations past 4.5 stars in under two years.

03 / The problem it solvesThe gap between asking and acting

Plenty of tools can collect a response. The harder problem is the distance between a pile of raw feedback and a decision someone will actually make on a Tuesday. That gap is where most survey projects quietly die - the data sits in a spreadsheet, nobody has time to read it, and the next survey goes out anyway.

Sogolytics aims at that gap directly. Its dashboards track NPS, CSAT, and CES in real time. Its text and sentiment analysis reads open-ended answers at volume. Its flexible tagging routes urgent issues to the people who can fix them. And its GenAI layer will draft a survey from a plain-language prompt, then hand back a structured, prioritized plan once the answers are in. The pitch is less "here is your data" and more "here is what to do about it."

The Virginia Physicians for Women story is a good illustration of the mechanic in practice. The practice did not beg patients for reviews. It asked the satisfied ones at the right moment and pointed them toward a public review page, letting the feedback loop do the work. That is a small design decision, but it is the difference between a survey that ends in a spreadsheet and one that changes a business outcome.

04 / How it's differentThe base plan is the whole point

The experience-management market has a familiar shape at the top: Qualtrics and Medallia sell deep, capable platforms with pricing floors that start in the six figures. SurveyMonkey, Alchemer, QuestionPro, Typeform, and Zoho Survey crowd the other end. Sogolytics planted itself in the wide, under-served middle - enterprise-grade capability, mid-market price - and it made a specific choice about how to package it.

That choice is anti-upsell. Core capabilities are included in the base plans rather than locked behind add-on tiers, and the company markets transparent, pay-for-what-you-use pricing with no renewal-time surprises. It is a boring promise. It is also, apparently, a persuasive one: the company reports that about 79% of its customers switched from a competitor.

05 / The productsFour names, one engine

The suite splits cleanly by who you are trying to understand. It grew out of the original survey tool, and the family resemblance is easy to spot.

SogoSurvey

The original AI-powered survey tool - build, distribute, and analyze surveys with advanced logic and instant reporting.

SogoCX

Customer experience management: listen across the journey, run NPS/CSAT programs, and act on what you learn.

SogoEX

Employee experience: engagement surveys, eNPS, 360s, lifecycle analytics, and sentiment-tagged follow-up.

SogoCore

The enterprise feedback engine that unifies insight from customers, employees, and partners in one place.

Around those four sit the connective tissue: Experience Navigator for mapping a strategy quickly, custom real-time dashboards, integrations with Google Analytics, Zapier, CRM and HRIS systems, and full-service managed research for teams that would rather hand off the whole project.

06 / The business modelSlow money, compounded

Here is the part that makes founders lean in. Sogolytics ran for roughly twelve years without outside capital, funding growth from subscriptions. By 2025 it was reported at around $11.4M in annual recurring revenue with a team of about 104 people, and it reportedly took its first institutional round that January - a notable reversal for a company that had made bootstrapping part of its identity. The revenue and valuation figures are third-party estimates, so treat them as approximate.

The model itself is straightforward B2B SaaS: a free tier, a Pro plan starting around $39 a month, custom enterprise pricing, and paid managed-research services on top. What is unusual is the restraint - growth paced to cash rather than to a fundraising calendar. For a category where the standard move is to raise big and buy market share, a company that expanded to three continents on subscription revenue is a genuinely different specimen.

There is a discipline hidden in that approach. When every dollar of growth comes from a customer rather than an investor, the product roadmap answers to the people paying for it. The features that survive are the ones customers renew for, not the ones that look good in a pitch deck. It is a slower way to build. It also tends to produce the kind of retention numbers Sogolytics likes to quote.

79% SWITCHED IN

The switcher's platform. Roughly four in five Sogolytics customers arrived from a competing tool. In a market where the giants win on brand and the small tools win on price, that number is the clearest signal of what the company actually sells: a reason to leave.

07 / The expertiseCertifications nobody frames on the wall

When you hold an organization's most sensitive feedback - patient sentiment, employee complaints, student safety data - trust is not a marketing layer. It is the product. Sogolytics carries SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001, HIPAA, GDPR, and PCI DSS compliance, plus an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau. None of it is exciting. All of it is why a school district or a hospital signs.

CEO Hamid Farooqui is not new to this corner of the world, either. Before Sogolytics he co-founded K12 Insight, an education-feedback company, and served as its CTO - which helps explain why schools show up so often in the customer stories.

08 / Where it fitsThe name finally caught up

The 2022 rebrand from SoGoSurvey to Sogolytics was not a coat of paint. "It's time for our brand to catch up to the work we do," Farooqui said at the time, and that sentence is the whole strategy in miniature. The company had spent years building experience management under a name that said "survey," and the gap between the two had become a liability.

Today Sogolytics sits in the space between the enterprise heavyweights and the light SMB tools, betting that the middle of the market is enormous and badly served. From three offices - Herndon, Mumbai, and Dubai - it keeps adding capability at a pace set by its own customers. It is not the loudest company in its category. Judging by the switch rate, that may be the point.
