First, agree on the product.

Riversand built a business around a stubborn enterprise problem: every system has a different version of the truth. Inside Syndigo, that work now connects the product record to the places people shop.

At Beiersdorf, the company behind Nivea, selling a product involved another task: assembling its information. Salespeople exported facts from SAP. Marketing worked with country-specific Excel files, maintained in different ways. A website relaunch and an online shop made those arrangements harder to sustain. The product could be perfectly consistent while its description changed with the department holding the spreadsheet.

That is a useful place to meet Riversand. Its business lives in the distance between having information and being able to use it. A bottle, a component or a customer account may exist in several systems. Somebody has to decide which details belong together, which version wins and who can change it.

THE QUICK READ / 03 POINTS
  • Riversand governs shared business records and prepares product information for selling.
  • Its customers face complex catalogs, multiple systems and many people handling the same facts.
  • Syndigo bought the business in 2021, connecting that foundation with broader commerce capabilities.

01 / The argument inside the spreadsheet

Product Information Management, or PIM, sounds like filing. In practice, it is closer to coordinating a publication. Technical specifications, pictures, descriptions and translations must arrive, pass checks and reach the right channels. Master Data Management, or MDM, tackles the underlying identities and relationships: which supplier, which product, which customer, which location.

Riversand offered both. Its multi-domain approach matters when the product record cannot be understood alone. A supplier owns information; a location sells an assortment; a customer belongs to an account hierarchy. Keeping those connections coherent is a different problem from simply writing a better product description.

At Beiersdorf, introducing Riversand meant creating a central PIM and gradually bringing in countries and brands. It also required changes to employees’ daily work. That last detail in Advellence’s customer account deserves attention. A shared database becomes useful when people actually treat it as shared authority.

02 / The retailer that usually built its own

Jewelry Television provides a different test. JTV usually built its supporting technology internally. For richer product information, it chose Riversand. CTO Chris Meystrik pointed to the vendor’s focus and the ability to fit into JTV’s existing systems. The rollout began with selected categories before the full catalog went live in June 2018.

In CRM’s 2019 account, JTV reported 30 percent greater efficiency and three times as much website product data. Newly created products reached the website in seconds instead of tens of minutes. Those are useful operational results. They do not establish a universal sales uplift for every Riversand customer.

03 / More than a shop-window problem

The expertise extends beyond merchandising. Birlasoft describes implementing Riversand customer MDM for an unnamed multinational healthcare manufacturer. Salesforce, Riversand and JDE were connected so customer information could move coherently between relationship management, the customer hub and enterprise operations.

The project included address validation and credit-risk information. Birlasoft reports reduced reshipping and repackaging costs, without giving a monetary figure. Here, the consequences of inconsistent data are concrete: the wrong address creates physical work. A duplicate account or incomplete credit check can interfere with onboarding. The record has a life outside the screen.

That helps explain the product range: data quality rules, governance, supplier onboarding, asset management and publishing. Pictures and documents need to stay attached to the correct product. Supplier submissions need review. Updates need somewhere reliable to go. Riversand sells the machinery for those handoffs.

04 / A cloud platform meets a distribution network

Founded in 2001 by Upen Varanasi and Anil Kini, Riversand developed into an enterprise software supplier before its cloud-native platform arrived in 2018. Crestline’s investment history includes a $35 million Series A in 2017 and another $10 million announced in December 2019. The latter backed product development and expansion.

Syndigo acquired Riversand on May 27, 2021. The fit was straightforward: Riversand brought MDM and PIM; Syndigo brought complementary syndication, enhanced content and analytics. Governing information and delivering it to trading partners could sit within a broader portfolio. The deal’s terms were undisclosed.

Today, buyers encounter these capabilities through Syndigo. In the market, alternatives include Akeneo, Inriver and Salsify for product information, and Stibo Systems and Informatica across overlapping enterprise requirements. Riversand’s position rests on combining product enrichment with wider master-data relationships and Syndigo’s distribution capabilities. Selection still depends on the actual integration problem.

Schneider Electric’s Building Business offers an earlier example of expanding the system’s role. It had used MDMCenter for product information since 2010. In 2013, it added Riversand’s media asset management module. The sequence illustrates how the requirement grows: first organize the product record, then keep the supporting media within reach of that record. The work continues after the first catalog goes live.

There were people behind this infrastructure, too. A March 2021 Great Place To Work profile reported that 92 percent of surveyed employees considered Riversand a great workplace. Its photographs show colleagues collaborating, supporting the Houston Astros and participating in a local 5K. That is a historical glimpse of the company before the acquisition, rather than a measure of its present organization.

05 / The price includes decisions

The commercial model is enterprise SaaS, with implementation and integration work around it. A useful buying exercise includes subscription fees, data preparation, interfaces, partner services and the employees who will own the process. A licensing proposal alone cannot describe the effort of reconciling years of inconsistent definitions.

The cases suggest a practical approach readers can copy: choose a bounded catalog or customer domain, assign ownership, define approval rules and measure the handoffs. Expand after the first workflow works. A small, stable catalog with few contributors may need much less machinery. An organization unwilling to settle ownership disputes can carry those disputes into expensive software.

06 / Before the agent presses publish

In 2026, Syndigo introduced Synapse and its conversational interface, SynapseGo, for workflows including onboarding, enrichment and syndication, with human oversight. These are parent-company developments. They add a new reason to care about the foundation Riversand worked on: automated actions depend on usable, governed records.

The bottleneck has changed its clothes, but the question remains familiar. Before a salesperson, a website or an AI agent tells somebody what a product is, the business has to agree.
