Company / Media · The business of being understood

Iyuno makes the world laugh in another language

A subtitle is a tiny piece of text with a very large job. Iyuno built a global business around getting it right, then bought the studios and built the software to make stories travel.

David Lee had a sensible plan: do some subtitling, then leave for graduate school. In his 2023 founder interview, he recalled three founders putting in roughly $2,000 each through cash advances. He wrote software to speed the work. Yet the DVD business lost money within eight months. The customers paid poorly. Efficiency, it turned out, could make an unsatisfactory bargain happen faster.

The story in four lines
  • Iyuno turns finished content into local-language releases.
  • Its customers include studios, streamers and broadcasters.
  • Acquisitions connected local studios to a wider production network.
  • CLOE now aims to carry story context through AI workflows.

That beginning supplies a useful question for everything that followed. How do you make the work travel without making the meaning disappear? A subtitle can contain perfectly respectable words and still arrive late, spoil a joke or flatten a character. The trouble starts when we mistake translating a sentence for recreating an experience.

01 / The joke has to clear customs

Iyuno sells the work between a finished production and an audience who speaks another language. Its dubbing service covers casting through final mix, alongside voice-over and territory-specific narration. Its wider offering includes subtitles, captions, audio description, media processing and creative finishing. A client can commission language work, technical delivery or a combination.

Consider The Chosen. In May 2025, Iyuno reported up to 56 dubbed languages and 66 subtitled languages, working with Come and See and theologians. Biblical terminology had to remain accurate while dialogue accommodated local usage. Iyuno also supplied English audio description, promotional localization and digital cinema packages for theatrical events. This was one programme generating several quite different production jobs.

Up to these totals, reported by Iyuno in May 2025. The language sets overlap.

The practical value is coordination. A broadcaster or streamer needs language specialists, performers and files that satisfy delivery requirements. Hiring Iyuno puts those tasks within an organized service relationship. The viewer encounters the result as a voice or a line of text. The buyer encounters it as a collection of deadlines.

02 / Buying the room, keeping the accent

The company’s expansion combined local production with shared systems. Lee describes an early approach of winning work through a local vendor, then adding owned operations. The transferable idea is modest: let demand justify capacity. Once the business needed a larger geographic presence, acquisitions offered an established route.

Investor Altor records the BTI Studios merger in 2019 and the SDI Media acquisition in 2021. In January 2024, Iyuno acquired São Paulo’s Unidub Brazil. Its announcement left financial terms undisclosed. The strategic attraction is easier to see: an operating studio brings local casting relationships and production knowledge that a distant headquarters cannot simply download.

There was substantial capital behind the expansion. SoftBank Vision Fund 2 announced a $160 million investment in April 2021. A subsequent IMM financing announcement in January 2022 put enterprise value at $1.2 billion. That figure describes a historical enterprise value; it is not today’s share price. Altor reports 2024 turnover above €200 million.

03 / A good room still matters

The photograph below offers a useful corrective to an entirely digital account of localization. Iyuno’s 2025 São Paulo renovation included recording rooms, mixing facilities and a Dolby Atmos room, with interiors shaped around Brazilian creative culture. Even an international workflow eventually arrives at a person trying to deliver a convincing line.

São Paulo’s mixing room. A comfortable place to spend an unreasonable amount of time on one syllable.

Iyuno’s Burbank facility lists ten recording studios and eight media quality-control bays. The distinction matters. Producing the performance and checking the deliverable are separate disciplines. A beautifully acted dub can still become a troublesome file. Media engineering is the unglamorous work that makes the creative work usable.

Central processing helps connect those rooms. In April 2026, Iyuno and SDVI received the NAB Show Project of the Year award for Media Operations for a cloud-based supply chain using SDVI Rally. The project coordinated ingestion, processing and international delivery. That is tangible operational work beneath the company’s software ambitions.

04 / Give the machine a memory

Iyuno introduced CLOE in March 2026. By September, it described Enterprise, Sub, Script, Dub and Live as a commercial suite in production. The architecture uses specialized AI agents and a persistent graph of story context, intended to reduce repeated interpretation. Treat the company’s cost and consistency promises as claims to evaluate against your own material.

“Every title we process makes the graph more capable, not more expensive to run.”

The problem is familiar to anyone who has watched a sequel forget its own rules. A character’s title, a relationship or an invented place name needs to survive across episodes and deliverables. CLOE Enterprise lets teams review and edit that shared memory. CLOE Script applies context to production scripts; CLOE Live carries names, terminology and style through broadcasts.

05 / The brief comes before the button

Iyuno occupies the broad-service end of the market. VSI also operates an international studio network. Local specialists offer another route. Buyers should compare the actual language teams, creative review, technical specifications and delivery commitments. A large network alone does not decide which performance will suit a particular audience.

Security belongs in that comparison. Iyuno acknowledged unauthorized access to confidential content in August 2024; it announced ISO27001 certification in February 2026. Certification is a useful signal about management practices, rather than a promise that future incidents are impossible. Early access to unreleased entertainment makes confidentiality part of the service itself.

The lesson worth copying is to coordinate repeatable work while protecting local judgment. For a small, single-language project, maintaining an international production network may be unnecessary. For AI-assisted work, review the shared context before multiplying outputs: an error remembered consistently is still an error. Iyuno’s proposition is most persuasive when the assignment actually needs the combination it sells - creative adaptation, production capacity and dependable delivery.
