A software business can have a working product and still be missing the machinery of a business. Someone must find buyers, organize delivery, improve quality, and decide which opportunity deserves the team’s time. Code offers little assistance with that last question. Fumsoft, the Minas Gerais Software Society, has made a profession of working on the things surrounding the code.
- A nonprofit association serving technology businesses, from university ventures to established companies.
- Acceleration sits alongside software quality, research projects, data governance, and international business support.
- Its 2026 STEMulheres program funds testing before choosing larger pilots.
A collective answer to an individual problem
Fumsoft’s anniversary account places its beginning in July 1992, when a group of businesspeople decided that the emerging information and communications technology sector needed organization. The founding idea was collective: a promising market still needed institutions to help it develop. The association’s own history begins with entrepreneurs noticing a change and arranging themselves around it.
Today, Fumsoft operates from Belo Horizonte as a nonprofit business association. It reports research-institution recognition since 1994 and federal OSCIP status since 2010. It represents Softex in Minas Gerais and is accredited as a SebraeTec agent. These roles place it between businesses, public bodies, researchers, and support programs. That position explains an offering broader than the familiar accelerator pitch.
Five things a product cannot do alone
The acceleration program divides development into market, technology, capital, management, and the entrepreneur. The fifth item is revealing. A founder is treated as someone whose capabilities need development alongside the venture’s product and finances. Mentoring, consulting, talks, and training are adapted to the business rather than presented as a uniform cure.

Its published open-acceleration offering describes six months of support. University pre-acceleration helps students develop and validate a minimum viable product; corporate programs begin with the problems an organization wants solved. The methods draw on Lean Startup, Customer Development, People Analytics, and CERNE. The practical appeal is the ability to bring several kinds of expertise to the same venture.
A first-half 2023 benefits booklet names Moip, ioasys, Dito, and AppProva among accelerated businesses. It reports more than 120 companies accelerated by 2019. That is a historical participation figure, useful for understanding experience. It should not be mistaken for a current cohort size or a promise about what happens to the next applicant.
The certificate begins with a diagnosis
Established software companies have a different problem. A team can deliver a product while struggling to repeat the performance reliably. Fumsoft has worked on MPS.BR process improvement since 2005, offering consulting and evaluation for software and services. Its account says more than 100 companies have applied these process practices.
The published sequence is instructive: choose the domain, diagnose existing practices, identify gaps, and decide the maturity level to pursue. Management awareness and team training come early. Certification requires changes in how people work. A business unwilling to give staff time or management attention to those changes has a poor starting position, however attractive the certificate looks.
Data governance consulting adds another neighboring discipline. Research projects add a different institutional capability: Fumsoft’s R&D page describes CATI accreditation since 2011 to manage qualifying research resources under Brazil’s Lei da Informática. For businesses with eligible projects, the association can help organize research work within that framework.
Connections need somewhere to lead
Internationalization is another part of the offering. Fumsoft lists business programs involving Lisbon’s Web Summit, New York’s NRF, India, Israel, France, Britain, and Silicon Valley. Its service combines missions and introductions with consulting and training. The logic is straightforward: a foreign contact becomes more useful when the company is prepared to do business with it.
A collaboration with Stanford Center for Professional Development reportedly trained 100 entrepreneurs from 50 technology companies. At home, Fumsoft co-founded MGTI with Assespro-MG, Sucesu Minas, and Sindinfor. Shared workspace and meeting facilities provide the physical setting for some of these connections. There is an unromantic advantage to having somewhere people can actually meet.

R$15,000 to find out; up to R$120,000 to go further
The 2026 STEMulheres no Rio Doce program makes the approach unusually concrete. With financial support from the Fundo Socioambiental CAIXA, it seeks solutions that help girls and women enter and continue in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The proposed setting is 13 municipalities in Minas Gerais’ Rio Doce basin.

Selection precedes funding. These are program terms, not completed results.
Eligible organizations need an active Brazilian CNPJ, a developed or minimally validated service or product, and a solution connected to the challenge. They must attend mentoring and assessments and be willing to adapt to the territory. The program website lists applications through October 14, 2026. Its structure offers a useful lesson: spend on learning before committing to broader implementation.
The team is part of the experiment
Fumsoft’s June 2024 advice on intrapreneurship identifies a recurring selection error: giving ideas more weight than the people who will execute them. It says experience led it to improve team selection and combine objective questionnaires with semi-structured interviews. Expectations, previous experience, complementary skills, and familiarity with the challenge all matter.
“Good ideas cannot be carried out without good teams, under any circumstances.”Fumsoft’s team-selection guidance, June 2024 · translated from Portuguese
That is advice a reader can copy: describe the opportunity clearly, ask what participants expect, and check whether the program suits their maturity. Fumsoft warns that mismatched expectations produce frustration and weak engagement. This is an observed operating lesson, rather than a named failed venture with a tidy redemption story.
The association’s business model includes membership payments, services, and supported projects. Its 2024 board election brought Daniel Monteiro to the presidency through 2027, with connections and demand for local technology among his priorities. For a prospective member, the useful question is specific: which constraint needs help? A founder seeking validation, a software team improving delivery, and a company preparing to sell overseas need different work. Fumsoft’s breadth matters when it can connect that need to the right people.
