Ernesta’s big idea: stop making the room fit the rug

The Peloton co-founders’ next venture sells rugs cut to the inch. Its more interesting experiment is making a custom purchase feel less like a gamble.

Consider the small indignity of buying a rug. You measure the room, admire a photograph, select an eight-by-ten, and discover that one chair sits half on it, half off. The furniture looks faintly undecided. Nothing is defective. Everything is almost right. Ernesta’s business begins in that gap between a perfectly respectable product and a room that refuses to cooperate.

The story in three cuts
  • Curated rugs, sized to the inch, for homeowners and residential designers.
  • Samples and consultations help buyers commit before fabrication.
  • Twelve showrooms announced by September 2026; thirty targeted by the end of 2027.

Founded in 2022 by John Foley, Hisao Kushi and Yony Feng, the company sells custom-sized rugs online and through showrooms. All three previously co-founded Peloton. The move from exercise equipment to floor coverings makes a diverting headline. But the more useful question concerns the customer: how do you make an expensive, unfamiliar purchase feel manageable?

01 / The inches everyone ignores

Ernesta lets buyers choose dimensions down to the inch. That matters because a rug establishes the relationship between furniture and empty space. A generous rectangle can gather a seating arrangement together; a timid one can leave it looking like several separate purchases. The company is selling the possibility of choosing that relationship deliberately.

Custom rugs already existed. Local carpet dealers, designer suppliers and established home retailers offer alternatives. Ernesta’s proposition is to make the process approachable through a curated assortment, visible pricing and help with selection. Its place in the market sits between the convenience of standard-sized retail and the guidance associated with a designer-led commission.

The distinction is custom size, rather than unlimited artistic invention. Buyers choose from existing styles and materials, then tailor the fit. Wool, natural fibers and performance options give different households different starting points. This is an edited shop, with measurement added to the transaction. Someone seeking a one-off pictorial tapestry has a different assignment.

02 / The square foot before the leap

A screen can show color. It cannot settle what a weave feels like underfoot, or how a pale neutral behaves beside your sofa. Ernesta’s twelve-inch-square samples move those judgments into the room where the rug will live. The customer gets to inspect a small piece before purchasing a much larger consequence.

At the May 2023 beta launch, a box of up to five samples cost $50, credited toward a rug. Current customer FAQs list five for $10 with a $50 purchase credit. The terms have evolved; the mechanism remains sensible. Make the uncertain part of the decision small enough to handle.

The company’s launch announcement says feedback from its invitation-only alpha informed sampling and delivery options. Access stayed gated during beta so Ernesta could manage demand. That sequence supplies a practical lesson for another retailer: test the service around the merchandise, because the box, the timing and the doorstep are part of what customers buy.

03 / A custom cut has consequences

Once a rug is cut for your room, it becomes harder to sell to someone else. Ernesta’s terms reflect that reality: buyers have twenty-four hours to cancel; afterward, ordinary refunds and exchanges are unavailable except under the limited warranty. Sampling and careful measurement therefore carry real weight. Admiration is easy. Dimensions deserve a second look.

Price also needs context. In a 2024 Forbes interview, Foley put the average order at about $2,000. That was a snapshot, not today’s quotation. Current listings show starting prices that vary by style; a larger rug, optional binding or pad changes the bill. Ernesta earns revenue by selling the finished rug and related options.

Timing is similarly conditional. Ernesta generally describes delivery in two to four weeks, with variation by product and service. A two-week arrival should not become the foundation of a dinner-party deadline. International buyers are outside its current shipping scope. Within the United States, customers should check their address before planning around an order.

04 / The internet opens a door

Ernesta opened its first showroom on Manhattan’s Upper East Side in April 2024. By September 2026, it announced Chicago as number eleven and Santa Monica as number twelve. A business born online was investing in places where people could sit with samples and another human being.

For designers, those spaces serve a working purpose. The trade program offers preferred pricing, free samples, account support and storage until clients are ready. Current trade terms specify residential use. A designer managing several rooms needs coordination as well as taste; keeping a rug out of an unfinished house can be a useful service.

The March 2026 Series B brought $20 million from Addition, True Ventures and Platform Capital Management. Ernesta earmarked capital for showrooms and technology, including trade tools and manufacturing improvements. The thirty-location goal remains a plan. Its success will depend on turning physical consultation into enough completed orders to support the physical expense.

05 / Pattern, without shouting

The September 2026 Modern Geometry launch shows where Ernesta’s merchandising is going. Seven styles use weave, construction and contrasting pile heights to make patterns through texture. Two further arrivals expand Earth Tones. The pleasure is quiet: a surface that rewards attention without requiring every other object in the room to apologise.

Ernesta’s name joins references to Ernest Hemingway and Bob Nesta Marley. That is considerable cultural company for something destined to sit beneath a coffee table. Yet the useful idea is modest and copyable: identify the compromise customers routinely accept, then organise selection, guidance and delivery around removing it. Here, the compromise is measured in inches.
