In vitro fertilization is one of the great medical achievements of the last century - it earned a Nobel Prize and has produced millions of babies. Yet nearly five decades on, the work still happens the same way: an embryologist, a microscope, and a set of intricate manual steps repeated by hand. Two labs running the same protocol can produce different outcomes, because the most important variable in the room is human.
Conceivable Life Sciences was founded in 2022 to remove that variability. Its platform, AURA, uses precision robotics, advanced optics, machine vision and proprietary software to standardize the more than 200 microscopic steps of an IVF cycle - from preparing dishes and sperm, to identifying eggs, to the delicate act of injecting a single sperm into a single egg.
The company frames the problem plainly. Roughly 750,000 IVF babies are born each year, but Conceivable estimates true global demand at around 12 million. The gap is not a science problem - the science works. It is a problem of cost, capacity and consistency. Automating the lab is how the company proposes to close it.
The approach has a philosophy behind it. CEO Alan Murray credits a principle from complexity science called "The Adjacent Possible" - the idea that combining existing technologies in a new way can produce something genuinely transformative. Conceivable did not invent IVF or robotics; it industrialized science that already works.

The problems Conceivable targets are concrete: IVF cycles cost roughly $12,000-$25,000 each, skilled embryologists are scarce, and outcomes swing from lab to lab. Most fertility startups chase the diagnostics or the apps. Conceivable went after the physical lab.
The global fertility market is projected to reach roughly $87 billion by 2034, with about 40% of large US employers now offering fertility benefits. Conceivable sits at the hardware-and-lab layer - the least glamorous, most decisive part of the stack, where capacity and consistency are actually determined.
Rivals like Nova IVF (AI embryo assessment) and SpOvum Technologies (robotics for sperm injection) automate slices of the process. Conceivable's claim is end-to-end: a full automated lab spanning all six workstations, validated by real live births rather than lab demos alone.
