CJ and the price of a recommendation

A sale has many helpers. CJ connects brands with the publishers and creators who influence a purchase, then tackles the awkward business of deciding who gets paid.

Twenty-eight publishers disappeared from a retailer’s affiliate program. One had ranked among its top twenty. Removing them might have sounded like an excellent way to lose money. According to CJ’s account of the migration, revenue held steady. The retailer redirected savings toward compliant partners and, six months later, revenue was up 24%. The case is anonymous and company-reported. Still, it poses a deliciously uncomfortable question: what, exactly, had those departed partners been contributing?

The story in three points
  • The job: connect brands with publishers and creators, then track and reward agreed outcomes.
  • The distinction: CJ combines a partner network, measurement software, and people who help run programs.
  • The useful lesson: inspect the quality of a commission before celebrating the quantity of sales.

01 / THE CREDIT PROBLEMA recommendation needs an accountant

Affiliate marketing begins with an appealing bargain. A publisher introduces a customer; a brand pays when the customer takes an agreed action. A travel blog recommends a hotel. A shopping guide links to a jacket. A cashback service rewards an order. CJ supplies the machinery between these parties: discovery, tracking, reporting, and commissions.

That machinery has been running since 1998, when Commission Junction began in Santa Barbara. Its founding team included Lex Sisney, Per Pettersen, and Todd Crawford. Crawford later co-founded competitor impact.com, a small reminder that this industry’s family tree contains some awkward dinner invitations.

ValueClick bought Commission Junction in December 2003. A later regulatory filing put the aggregate purchase price at approximately $62.1 million, including stock, cash, transaction costs, and converted options. That was an acquisition price, a useful distinction from venture funding or a present-day valuation.

Today, CJ belongs to Publicis Groupe. It says it serves more than 3,800 brands. Its customers span retail, travel, finance, and home services; its partners range from individual creators to established media businesses. The company’s scale matters because an advertiser needs relevant relationships as well as working software.

Anatomy of an affiliate transaction
  1. 01Recommend
    A publisher introduces an offer.
  2. 02Act
    A customer buys or qualifies.
  3. 03Record
    The integration reports the event.
  4. 04Reward
    Program terms determine payment.
Four steps. Plenty of room for an argument about step three. Simplified transaction flow.

For publishers, the practical appeal is consolidation. They can discover advertisers, create links to particular product pages, review performance, and receive commissions through one platform. For brands, CJ adds recruitment, program management, and analytics. Its APIs also let technical teams bring affiliate data into their own systems.

The bill has several parts. Publisher account creation is free; advertisers discuss pricing with CJ. Brands also fund commissions and devote staff or agency time to the program. Evaluating the economics means counting those costs alongside discounts and returns, rather than treating every attributed dollar as profit.

Awin, Rakuten Advertising, and impact.com occupy overlapping territory. CJ’s proposition combines its existing relationships, international operations, and service teams with its technology. The sensible comparison is specific: which provider has the partners your customers use, the integrations your business needs, and terms your margins can support?

02 / WHAT THE CLICK MISSESA hotel room. A dry brush. A phone.

Consider IHG’s challenge. Travelers were booking through online travel agencies, increasing the hotel group’s cost of sale. CJ’s European campaign with IHG promoted direct booking and loyalty membership, including content with Head for Points alongside cashback and voucher partners. The objective was to change where a booking happened. A higher booking count alone would have missed the point.

Then consider goop, preparing for a national television shopping segment. Viewers could see the product but could hardly click the television. CJ used a unique promotional code through Clickless Tracking to record redemptions. CJ reports that over 90% came from new customers. A familiar retail device, the discount code, became a measurement instrument.

Mobile shopping introduces another complication: a customer taps a link on the web and completes the purchase inside an app. CJ and Button tested enhanced shopping flows against existing experiences. Their published analysis reports a 38% conversion-rate increase versus the control. That is a result from participating advertisers, not a forecast for every merchant.

These examples explain why CJ has several named offerings. CJ Influence covers creator discovery and campaign work. CJ Leads handles acquisition campaigns and lead quality, including cleansing with Databowl. CJ Marketplaces gives Amazon sellers control over publisher relationships and commission rates. Different jobs, sharing the problem of making a recommendation commercially accountable.

03 / THE NEXT CHECKOUTFollow the shopper, then question the credit

In July 2025, CJ announced an integration for US TikTok Shop that lets publishers earn seller commissions from referrals outside TikTok. A newsletter can supply the recommendation while TikTok supplies the checkout. Keeping those events connected is increasingly the work.

In January 2026, CJ added AI Visibility and Optimization. Its managed service measures brand presence in AI answers and uses publisher and creator campaigns to pursue improvements. CEO Santi Pierini described AI search as “a new front door to commerce.” An appearance in an answer, however, still needs a commercial purpose.

The transferable idea is to define the outcome before choosing the incentive. CJ’s audience and situational commissioning tools let advertisers vary rewards using additional parameters. A program seeking new customers can set different priorities from one clearing inventory. The commission structure tells partners what the business actually values.

Customer-level analysis offers another check. CJ’s Affiliate Customer Insights separates new and returning customers and examines online and offline purchasing. A partner that appears modest in a web-only report may influence store sales; a busy partner may largely reach existing buyers. Those differences matter when deciding whether to increase a payout. They also explain why the person managing a program needs access to business data beyond the affiliate dashboard.

This approach requires an audience that fits the offer, a store that converts, workable margins, and people who maintain tracking. A free publisher account supplies no readership. A large advertiser program supplies no automatic proof of additional demand. Attribution records credit; the question of what would have happened without a partner requires further investigation.

That leaves a useful discipline for anyone copying the playbook: audit partners, test the purchase journey, and judge results against the customer behavior you hoped to change. Sometimes the revealing number is the revenue that remains after somebody stops getting paid.
