CHEGG expands into internship matching, applications and interview preparation

Company / Education · The next assignment

Chegg has a new homework assignment: get you hired.

Chegg built a business around the stuck student. After AI disrupted paid homework help, it is betting that the harder problem comes after graduation.

A college textbook has an awkward economic life. A student needs it intensely for a few months, then may never open it again. Chegg built its first substantial business around that mismatch: buy the book, rent it for a term, and rent it again. The clever part was recognizing that ownership was an expensive answer to a temporary need.

The quick study
  • Chegg sells academic help, language learning and workforce training.
  • Free AI answers and changing search traffic have squeezed its subscription business.
  • Its newest bet connects skills, internship applications and interview preparation.

Twenty years after its founding, the company is confronting another mismatch. Students spend years preparing for work, then encounter a fragmented collection of job boards, application forms and interview rituals. Chegg wants to organize that transition. The company that helped you get through the assignment now wants to help you get hired.

A rental solved the first problem

Founded in 2005, Chegg launched online print textbook rentals in 2007. Aayush Phumbhra and Osman Rashid are the founders celebrated in its corporate history; Josh Carlson belongs to the earlier Cheggpost story. The name compresses “chicken” and “egg,” a reference to the familiar trap of needing experience to get a job and a job to get experience. Its current direction gives that old joke fresh relevance.

The rental model required real capital. Books had to be purchased before they could earn their keep, and profitability depended on repeated use. Chegg’s 2013 offering priced 15 million shares at $12.50, a $187.5 million gross offering that included shares sold by an existing stockholder. Even then, the company was building services that could travel without a shipping label.

Homework help was a natural extension. A book delivered the syllabus; an explanation helped a student survive it. Chegg Study offered step-by-step support, while writing tools addressed citations and drafts. Bundling those needs into subscriptions gave the business more occasions to be useful than the beginning and end of a semester.

The answer became easier to find elsewhere

For a student, the attraction is practical. Type a question or upload an image. Work through an explanation. Use Mathway for a calculation or consult writing tools for a citation. Chegg’s pitch rests on a purpose-built study experience, subject expertise and a substantial solution library. A general chatbot offers an increasingly familiar alternative, often with a free entry point.

Chegg did respond. In April 2023 it announced CheggMate, built with GPT-4, combining conversational AI with its own learning material and experts. The following month, management acknowledged that rising student interest in ChatGPT was affecting new customer growth. Adding the technology that was changing the market did not automatically restore the old reasons to subscribe.

Another problem appeared at the front door. In its second-quarter 2025 results, Chegg attributed falling traffic largely to Google AI Overviews, while reporting improved retention and revenue per user. That distinction matters: people already paying could still find value while fewer prospective customers arrived. The acquisition channel could deteriorate before existing customers abandoned the product.

A smaller business, a different buyer

The financial reset was severe. Annual revenue fell from $617.6 million in 2024 to $376.9 million in 2025. Chegg recorded $51.5 million in restructuring charges during 2025. Those charges are a specific accounting cost of the reset, rather than a complete bill for everything the company lost along the way.

2025

A shorter bar, a much harder assignment. Revenue fell 39% in a year.

The alternative direction already had pieces in place. Chegg bought language-learning company Busuu in January 2022. The original announcement estimated a $436 million cash transaction; its subsequent filing reported approximately $417 million at completion. Alongside languages, Chegg Skills gave it a foothold in workforce learning and employer-funded education through channels including Guild.

That changes the buying conversation. An individual student weighs another monthly bill. An employer asks whether staff can apply a new skill at work. Chegg Skills offers ready-made programs, tailored pathways and content that can sit inside another organization’s learning system. It competes for training budgets as well as personal attention.

The next deadline is an interview

In September 2026, Chegg introduced an integrated internship experience: discover suitable opportunities, tailor a resume and cover letter, approve applications for submission, practice interviews and identify skills gaps. Students retain approval over application materials. The promised convenience is the connection between steps that normally require separate tabs, separate tools and repeated typing.

01 Find a fit02 Build the skills03 Apply & prepare

A job board can show an opening. A course catalog can teach a skill. Chegg is trying to connect the opening to the missing skill and then to an application. That puts it near Handshake and LinkedIn on one side, Coursera and other training providers on another. Its claimed advantage is continuity around the learner. Whether that continuity earns a lasting subscription remains an open commercial question.

Recent figures leave little room for a victory lap. Second-quarter 2026 revenue was $51.8 million, down 51% year over year. Skilling revenue increased 2% to $17.5 million. The company reported positive free cash flow alongside a $3 million net loss. A leaner operation and a growing training segment still have to contend with a contracting overall business.

Copy the sequence, question the outcome

There is a useful lesson here for builders: follow the next costly obstacle in an existing customer’s life. Chegg’s sequence runs from obtaining the book to understanding the work to getting work. Each step offers a reason to extend the relationship. Each also introduces a new competitor and a new standard of proof.

For learners, the sensible test is equally concrete. Does the explanation help you solve the next problem yourself? Does the course improve something you actually do? Does the application tool save time while preserving accuracy? Answers copied into assessed work can undermine learning and conflict with academic rules. Applications generated faster will achieve little if the candidate lacks the required skill. Chegg’s new promise becomes valuable when preparation survives contact with the classroom, the interview and the job.
