Carolina Reis Oliveira Put a Biotech Lab Behind the Beauty Counter

A Brazilian biochemist crossed from tissue engineering into consumer beauty, then spent five years and 900-plus peptide tests turning laboratory discipline into a direct-to-consumer company.

The useful way to understand Carolina Reis Oliveira is to begin before OneSkin had a bottle, a brand, or a beauty customer. Begin with a sheet of human tissue in a Brazilian lab and a scientist frustrated by the distance between an academic result and an ordinary person's life. Oliveira had studied biochemistry, immunology, stem-cell biology, and tissue engineering. She knew how to grow cells and measure what happened to them. What she wanted was a route from that knowledge to the world outside the university.

That route did not arrive as a clean business plan. In 2014, Oliveira co-founded CellSeq Solutions in Brazil. The company worked with human-cell models and bioinformatics, including lab-grown skin that could offer companies an alternative to animal testing. It was technical, service-oriented work. It was also the apprenticeship for the company that came next.

CellSeq did not become Oliveira's final venture. Yet its tools and questions traveled with her. When an opportunity brought her to IndieBio in San Francisco in 2016, she arrived with more than a theory. She had spent years learning how to reproduce human tissue, design an assay, and ask whether a product's promise survived contact with a model that could be measured.

The test became the thesis

OneSkin's first idea was not to sell skincare. The team planned to test products for other companies. Their human skin models gave them a way to evaluate cellular effects with more precision than a mirror or a consumer questionnaire. The founders examined products already on the market and concluded that the category's claims often ran ahead of what they could observe in the lab.

The pivot followed from an awkward realization: if their testing platform could not find what they wanted on the shelf, perhaps the better opportunity was to develop it. This changed the company from a backstage research service into a vertically integrated consumer business. It also made the problem harder. The team now had to discover a candidate, formulate it, validate it, manufacture it, explain it, price it, and convince someone to put it on their face.

Oliveira built this version of OneSkin with scientists she already knew through Brazil's research community. Alessandra Zonari brought expertise in skin regeneration and became chief scientific officer. Mariana Boroni brought bioinformatics and genomics. Juliana Carvalho brought molecular biology and immunology. Their disciplines formed a practical chain: build a model, read the model, search for a molecule, and test again.

The search took more than five years and ran through more than 900 peptides before the team chose OS-01. OneSkin describes the molecule as a senotherapeutic peptide, meaning it was selected for how it acted on senescent cells in the company's models. In 2020, members of the team published a skin-specific molecular-age algorithm. In 2023, a peer-reviewed paper in npj Aging reported results from human skin models treated with the peptide. Those publications mattered to the company for a simple reason: the evidence was not supposed to disappear when the packaging arrived.

Learning the other half of the company

A scientist can be right in a way that never leaves the lab. A consumer founder can be clear in a way that sands off every caveat. Oliveira's job required her to live between those failure modes. She had to raise capital from people who did not share her technical vocabulary. She had to hire marketers and operators. She had to explain molecular biology without pretending that a customer wanted a lecture with every order.

Her interviews reveal a founder willing to describe the rough drafts. Years ago, an accelerator accepted her on the condition that she find a co-founder. She had less than two weeks. She rushed into a partnership, and it failed. Her conclusion was not a slogan about moving fast. It was a warning about allowing another person's deadline to distort a decision that would last much longer than the program.

A founder's margin note

Oliveira's lesson from the failed partnership was precise: urgency can solve the visible requirement while making the important problem worse. A co-founder is not paperwork. Trust needs time.

The later OneSkin team looks like the correction. Its core relationships grew from shared scientific work rather than a countdown clock. The founders could disagree from a common base, and each owned a distinct part of the technical system. That structure became more valuable as the business added the messy functions a lab does not teach: supply chains, retention, creative direction, retail, and brand.

Oliveira also learned to recruit by listening for motivation. One question she has used in interviews asks candidates which project from the previous five years made them most passionate, and why. She believes the answer surfaces values, commitment, and how a person moves through obstacles. It is a researcher's question applied to people: do not ask only for the conclusion; inspect the process that produced it.

A business with the lab left visible

OneSkin finally launched its first face product in February 2021. The timing is useful. By then, five years of work sat behind a single item. The company was direct-to-consumer, but its difference was upstream: a screening platform, human tissue models, a molecular-age measurement, and a team capable of running the next experiment. The bottle was the visible end of a longer machine.

That machine began attracting recognition and capital. Fast Company included OneSkin among its Most Innovative Companies in beauty for 2024. The same year, Oliveira and Zonari were selected as Endeavor Entrepreneurs. In November 2024, OneSkin announced an oversubscribed Series A led by Selva Ventures, bringing the company's disclosed total funding at the time to $20 million. Investors included Unilever Ventures, PLUS Capital, Able Partners, SOSV, Meta Planet, and individuals such as Camila Alves McConaughey and Kevin Rose.

Then came an unusual second act. In August 2025, OneSkin announced that Prelude Growth Partners had made a $20 million investment completed the previous month. According to the announcement, OneSkin had not been actively raising. Prelude approached the company, and the transaction replaced an early seed investor with a growth partner. It was capital framed less as rescue or runway than as a choice about who should sit at the table for the next phase.

By 2026, Oliveira was talking publicly about widening distribution, building the leadership team, and making OneSkin more legible outside its first circle of science and longevity enthusiasts. She was named to the Inc. Female Founders 500 during the company's tenth anniversary year. The work had moved well beyond an assay. Yet the company continued to present research as its operating center, not a decorative origin story.

The free bird and the feedback loop

Oliveira has called herself a “free bird,” borrowing a phrase from the independence her parents encouraged. It fits the geography of her career, from Universidade Federal de Viçosa to UFMG, a visiting doctorate at Rutgers, an early company in Brazil, and a second one in San Francisco. It also fits her tendency to treat institutions as platforms rather than destinations.

There is playfulness around the edges. As a child, she joked with her mother that she might become a dancer. Friends once nicknamed her “the bride” because she was habitually late. She loves Brazilian cheese bread, named Up as a favorite movie, and said acting class taught her about herself by asking her to bridge her experience with a character. These are small details, but they complicate the familiar image of a founder-scientist as a person made entirely of whiteboards.

The through-line is translation. Oliveira translated tissue engineering into a testing service, the service into a product company, and a technical platform into a story customers could repeat. Each translation created a feedback loop. The lab informed the product. Customer response informed what the team built next. Investors supplied a different form of scrutiny. Publications exposed the work to another one.

That is the part of her playbook worth borrowing. Expertise becomes a business when it can survive movement: from specialist to operator, from experiment to shelf, from a careful claim to an understandable one. Oliveira did not shorten that distance by hiding the lab. She made the lab travel.
