Founded in Boston in 2018 by Justin Folkers and Cynthia Borgman, apiphani began with something unglamorous: on-premise SAP support. SAP is the software backbone that quietly runs supply chains, financial closes, energy grids and telecom networks. When it stops, factories idle and utilities scramble. The people who keep it running have historically been armies of contractors billed by the hour, often offshore, sized by headcount rather than skill.

apiphani took the opposite bet. Instead of scaling with bodies, it scaled with senior engineers and software. "CIOs and CFOs know that downtime is unacceptable," says Folkers, the company's co-founder and CEO. "It's our belief that a combination of expert engineers and AI-driven automation is the only model that scales with resilience." That belief is now backed by capital: in October 2025, apiphani raised a $25 million Series A led by Insight Partners, one of software's most active investors.

Seven years in, the company has evolved from a boutique SAP shop into an AI-native platform company. Its product, luumen, is a proprietary observability platform built for complex, business-critical workloads. Its differentiator, Deep Automation, is the layer that turns what luumen sees into action - resolving issues, the company says, before users ever notice them. The pitch to a CIO is disarmingly simple: your systems should be boring. Boring means they work.

The customers. apiphani sells to large enterprises, managed service providers and mid-sized businesses whose operations depend on systems that cannot fail. Its beachhead is in regulated sectors - energy, utilities and telecommunications - where uptime, security and compliance are not preferences but obligations. These are organizations for whom an outage is not an inconvenience; it is a regulatory event, a revenue loss, sometimes a public-safety concern.

The problem. Mission-critical IT environments are noisy. Alerts pile up, configurations drift, tickets multiply, and skilled engineers spend their days firefighting instead of building. The traditional fix - throw more, cheaper people at the queue - treats the symptom. apiphani argues the noise itself is the disease. Every incident that reaches a human is, in its view, a signal that could have been caught upstream.

The approach. Small teams of senior engineers, each empowered by luumen and Deep Automation, monitor and manage client environments. The software watches telemetry across the stack - the SAP application, the database, the infrastructure, the security posture - and unifies it in a single console. When it detects a familiar failure pattern, a self-healing run-book can act automatically. When it spots configuration drift, it flags it before it cascades. The engineer's job shifts from reacting to preventing.

The result. Fewer incidents, fewer tickets, and a client team freed to focus on the work that actually moves the business. apiphani frames this as its founding principle: all application managed services should directly and significantly benefit the client's business - not simply keep the lights on for a fee.

The model. apiphani is a technology-enabled services company - services plus software. Revenue comes from recurring application managed-services contracts and professional services such as implementations and migrations, with the luumen platform as the differentiator that lets a small team deliver what larger teams cannot. It is a deliberate departure from the volume-based, offshore billing that defines much of the sector.

The market. The company sits at the intersection of three large, established categories: SAP and enterprise application services, IT observability, and AIOps automation. Its competitors are the global systems integrators - the Accentures, Capgeminis and Infosyses of the world - along with SAP hosting specialists like Lemongrass and Rimini Street. apiphani's wedge is that it competes not on price-per-hour but on the one metric those firms are reluctant to publish.

The credibility. That wedge is sharpened by pedigree. Co-founder Cynthia Borgman spent 17 years building SAP hosting and managed services at Capgemini and served as CTO of Virtustream before helping start apiphani - she has run the incumbent model and chosen to build its alternative. In late 2025 the company added David McDougall, a 30-year enterprise-technology veteran, as Chief Revenue Officer to lead its commercial expansion.

The backing. Insight Partners, which has invested in more than 875 software companies, led the $25 million Series A with Moelis & Company advising. The capital is earmarked for scaling engineering and go-to-market teams across Boston and Lisbon and broadening the platform's industry reach - a bet that the "expertise plus automation" model can move from boutique to category.
