Long before Amir Reuveny had a company, he had a material problem. The electronics he studied at the University of Tokyo were supposed to survive what conventional circuits avoid: bending, folding, heat and contact with irregular surfaces. His doctoral work focused on organic thin-film transistors built on ultrathin foils. Some devices were tested at a bending radius of just 600 micrometers. Others were crumpled, stressed and assembled into circuits. The point was not merely to make a smaller component. It was to make electronics behave differently in the physical world.
That distinction follows Reuveny through the rest of his career. Wesper, the New York company he co-founded and now leads, makes wireless medical hardware backed by software and cloud analysis. Its origin sits in materials science, but its operating idea is more human: sophisticated technology earns a place in daily life when it asks less of the person using it.
Reuveny's route to that idea crosses several institutions and disciplines. He completed an honors double major in electrical engineering and physics at the Technion in 2005, earned a master's degree at Tel Aviv University, served in Unit 8200 of the Israel Defense Forces, and finished a PhD in Electrical Engineering and Information Systems at the University of Tokyo in 2015. He published with a large group of collaborators on tissue-machine interfaces, organic amplifiers, pressure sensors and ultraflexible transistors. By the time he left Tokyo, he knew how to make a device conform. The next question was whether a whole business could do the same.
The material taught the lesson
Flexible electronics are a useful education in humility. A device may perform perfectly on a rigid bench and fail once it meets skin, movement, temperature or an impatient hand. Reuveny's papers repeatedly dealt with that gap between controlled performance and lived conditions. One described transistors durable against severe crumpling. Another explored a transparent pressure sensor designed to ignore bending. The engineering challenge was to preserve the signal while the environment changed around it.
A founder faces the same pattern at a different scale. A product can be correct in a demo and awkward in a routine. It can produce impressive data while creating a new administrative burden. It can be technically elegant and still require too much explanation. Reuveny's later emphasis on comfort, familiar workflows and approachable language feels continuous with the lab work. In both cases, the design must absorb reality rather than demand that reality sit still.
A career in five bends
The runway between a paper and a company
In 2017, Reuveny joined the Runway Startup Postdoc Program at the Jacobs Technion-Cornell Institute. The program was built for researchers making the difficult transition from academic work to a venture. It supplied business training, mentoring, a research budget and, just as importantly, time. Reuveny later called it “the right program at the right time and in the right place.”
While in Runway, he co-founded Tatch with Ahud Mordechai. The early company concentrated on diagnostic technology. It would later broaden its product and identity under a new name, Wesper. This was more than a rebrand. The company had to connect a physical sensor to a mobile experience, cloud analysis, professional interpretation, logistics and support. The object on the body was only the visible edge of the product.

That sentence is a compact founder manual. New tools often arrive with a hidden invoice: new screens to learn, data to transfer, kits to manage and steps to explain. Reuveny chose to keep the kind of signals professionals already understood while changing how the information was collected and delivered. Familiarity became an interface choice.
The product is the loop, not the patch
Naming the feeling
Reuveny says “Wesper” combines vesper, an evening prayer, with whisper. The invented word carries the tone he wanted: calm, light and approachable. It is an unexpectedly lyrical choice from someone whose publication list includes phrases like “vacuum ultraviolet treatment” and “short-channel organic field-effect transistors.” It also shows that Reuveny understood translation as part of engineering. Technical language can prove precision; product language has to invite use.
He has described his interest in design and ease of use as central from the beginning. The company's visual and verbal identity leaned closer to a consumer brand than a laboratory supplier. The approach was deliberate. When a category feels unfamiliar, every detail either narrows or widens the distance between the technology and the person expected to trust it.
Away from the company, public biographies describe Reuveny cooking, traveling, spending time at the beach and being with family. Those are ordinary details, which is precisely why they fit. His professional work is full of highly specialized terms; his stated tastes run toward tactile, social pleasures. The same contrast appears in Wesper: difficult technology presented without the mood of difficulty.
Milestones, minus the montage
The company accumulated the conventional markers of a medical hardware startup. In November 2022, Wesper announced a $9.6 million Series A with participation from Valor Equity Partners, Breyer Capital and Spark Capital. In March 2023, the FDA recorded a substantially equivalent decision for Wesper Lab under the 510(k) pathway. Reuveny's name also appears on patents covering monitoring systems and animated interfaces.
Those milestones compress years of unphotogenic work: validation, manufacturing, software, documentation, shipping and iteration. Reuveny's public comments tend to distribute credit across the team and the people using the product. When Wesper announced a Gold award for Clinical Decision Support Tools in 2026, the company's explanation centered on hundreds of small decisions prompted by professional and patient feedback. The award was the visible punctuation, not the sentence.

One record is a strategy
At SLEEP 2026 in Baltimore, Wesper introduced Wesper Lite alongside Wesper Lab. Lab is the company's higher-fidelity respiratory product; Lite uses an optical sensor for a different level of testing. The strategically interesting part sits behind the products: both use the same platform, interpretation pipeline and patient record. A person can move from one tier to the other without being re-onboarded.
The release demonstrates how Reuveny's scope has widened. The early question concerned whether flexible sensors could capture useful signals. The later question concerns how a provider chooses among products without fragmenting operations. The unit of design is no longer a patch or even a test. It is the path through a system.
In July 2026, Reuveny published an essay arguing for richer diagnostic standards and ongoing management. A few weeks earlier, he appeared on SleepWorld Magazine's “Surfing the Sleep World” podcast to discuss the company's origins and his design principles. In that conversation, he returned to the idea that one night is not enough. Read as a business principle, the phrase is revealing: a snapshot can produce a transaction, while a longitudinal record creates continuity.
The return ticket
Founder stories often edit out the people who spent time before the outcome looked inevitable. Reuveny has been unusually direct about one of his. In a 2026 tribute to Uzi De-Haan, an early leader of Cornell Tech's Runway program, he recalled hours of one-on-one attention when all he had was a presentation. De-Haan educated him, challenged his thinking and refined his approach. Reuveny remembered the combination of belief and criticism.
By 2024, Reuveny had returned to Cornell Tech as a judge for a pitch event featuring new Runway and Spinouts teams. The symmetry is neat but the mechanism matters more. A researcher received rigorous attention, built a company, and came back to aim that attention at unfinished ideas. Startup ecosystems like to count capital. This exchange suggests another asset worth counting: experienced people willing to take an early idea seriously.
Reuveny's career is easy to summarize as a string of impressive nouns: Technion, Tokyo, Cornell, patents, funding, FDA, founder. The verbs are more instructive. He bent materials. He translated research. He preserved workflows. He widened a device into a system. He returned to judge the next cohort.
The common thread is accommodation with standards. Flexibility does not mean lowering the bar. It means designing a product strong enough to work amid the movements, habits and constraints that already exist. Reuveny learned that first from thin films. Wesper is the longer experiment.
