The Domain Said Everything

When Wei Zheng registered the company website at a.xyz - not "adotsearch.io" or "web3findthings.com" but simply a.xyz, one of the shortest possible addresses on the internet - it was less a branding decision than a statement of intent. He wants Adot to be foundational. Alphabet-level foundational. The search layer the AI internet runs on.

That is an audacious goal for a 2022 startup. It is less audacious when you understand who is running it. Wei spent the better part of two decades inside Google's core machinery, helping build the mobile search advertising ecosystem from scratch as a founding member of that team. The group he worked with did not just launch a product - it built the monetization engine that would fund Google's dominance for a generation.

Then he left. And now he is building something designed to compete with it.

"By implementing economic incentives, we encourage users to actively participate in AI-assisted Web3 content searches."

- Wei Zheng, CEO & Founder, Adot

Adot's premise cuts against how search has worked for 25 years: your queries are yours, your contributions to the index should be rewarded, and the data that powers AI search does not need to flow exclusively through a single corporate silo. Wei's pitch is that blockchain provides the trust layer Google never had - and that the Web3 generation will demand it.

Inside the Machine

The Google mobile search ads team that Wei helped found was not working on incremental improvements. Mobile internet was about to swallow desktop, and Google needed its ad business to migrate with it. Wei was in the room when that infrastructure was being designed from first principles - the auction mechanics, the relevance signals, the systems architecture capable of serving billions of queries while returning relevant paid results in milliseconds.

Twenty years is a long time to work on one company's problems. By the time Wei left, he had watched the search landscape evolve through feature phones, smartphones, voice queries, and into the early stirrings of AI-driven answer engines. He also watched something else accumulate: the concentration of power over what the world finds and does not find.

The Google Legacy

Wei's former employer controls approximately 90% of global search traffic. The mobile ad infrastructure he helped build contributes tens of billions of dollars annually to Alphabet's revenue. He understands exactly what he is going up against.

Between Google and Adot, Wei ran multiple startups - a serial entrepreneur's record that included deploying search services to hundreds of millions of mobile devices globally. Each iteration sharpened the question he eventually decided to answer with Adot: what does search look like when the index is open, the data is verifiable on-chain, and the people who contribute to it actually earn from their participation?

What Adot Actually Does

Search engines have a data problem most users never think about. When you type a query into Google, you are querying an index that only covers what Google's crawlers have reached and chosen to include. Blockchain networks - the on-chain universe of smart contracts, transaction histories, NFT metadata, and decentralized storage - exist almost entirely outside that index. A question about a specific wallet, a DeFi protocol's transaction volume, or data stored on Arweave returns nothing useful in traditional search.

Adot indexes both. Traditional web content and the on-chain world - unified, AI-ranked, and delivered through a search interface that runs as a web product, a Chrome extension, and an API and SDK for developers building Web3 applications.

The AI layer sits on top of all of this - providing relevance ranking, natural language querying, and the kind of answer-engine experience users now expect after ChatGPT made conversational search the new baseline. Wei's team averages 10+ years of search and AI experience: the algorithm lead studied at Peking University and has 15 years in search engineering; the backend lead built systems serving 200 million+ users. This is not a team learning search on the job.

The Part That Makes Crypto People Excited

The blockchain pitch in most Web3 companies is decorative - a token attached to a business that would function identically without it. Adot's token mechanics are structural. Wei's team has built an incentive system where users are not just consumers of the index but contributors to it.

Search to Earn launched in Q2 2024: users earn token rewards through daily search activity, turning passive consumption into active participation. Index to Earn follows the same logic - contribute URLs, data sources, or on-chain indexing to the network and receive a share of the value generated. Compute to Earn extends this to processing power, creating a distributed computing layer for the search infrastructure.

It is the economic argument for decentralization made concrete: not "trust us because blockchain" but "here is what you actually receive for contributing to the network."

The $6M Build

Adot has raised incrementally and deliberately - seed rounds used to prove product, then a Pre-A to scale, then strategic investment from a key blockchain ecosystem partner. The investor list reads like a who's-who of serious Web3 capital.

From Human Internet to Machine Internet

Wei's framing for where this is going is specific and worth understanding. The current internet was built for humans browsing with eyes and fingers. The next internet - the one AI agents navigate on your behalf - needs a different kind of infrastructure. Agents do not click through three search result pages. They need machine-readable, verifiable, structured data they can act on.

Blockchain is not just Wei's bet on decentralization for its own sake. It is his bet that the trust layer AI agents will require - the ability to verify that data has not been tampered with, that a source is what it claims to be, that a transaction happened when and where the record says it did - can only be provided by an immutable public ledger.

The Adot Thesis in Three Lines

AI needs verifiable data. Blockchain provides verification. Adot combines both into a search network that is open, transparent, efficient, and owned by the people who build it.

The mission statement from the company is blunt: "Build a decentralized search network that all-round surpasses traditional search engines to make all high-quality data openly accessible to every user and developer." The words "all-round surpasses" leave very little ambiguity about the competitive intent.

With 140 people, $6M raised, strategic investment from one of the most well-capitalized blockchain foundations, and a founder who helped build the system he is now competing against, Wei Zheng is running mid-stride. The question is just how far the stride goes.
