Tobii Dynavox turns eye movements into speech for people who have lost their voice. Here is how a Pittsburgh-and-Stockholm company built the tools that let hundreds of thousands of people be heard.

Tobii Dynavox builds augmentative and alternative communication technology - AAC, in the field's shorthand. That means speech-generating devices, eye-gaze hardware, and communication software for people who cannot rely on their own speech. The core ideaHow a glance becomes a sentence

The mechanism sounds like science fiction and works like plumbing. A small camera below the screen tracks where the user is looking. When their gaze rests on a symbol, a word or a letter - a technique called dwell - the device registers a selection. String those selections together and the device builds a message, then speaks it aloud. No hands, no keyboard, no speech required at the input end; fluent speech at the output end.

Access is not limited to the eyes. The same software supports touch, physical switches and scanning, so the method meets the user wherever their motor control is strongest. That flexibility is the quiet design philosophy running through the whole catalog: the person should not have to adapt to the machine.

What that unlocks day to day is broader than conversation. A user can compose an email, browse the web, control a phone, write a school assignment, or run parts of a smart home - all from the same gaze or switch input that speaks their words. For many, the device is not a single-purpose speech tool but a general-purpose computer they can finally operate. OriginsForty years from a Carnegie Mellon lab

The lineage is older than most of its users assume. It traces back to 1983 and a device called the EyeTyper, developed at Carnegie Mellon University for people with cerebral palsy. That work became DynaVox, a name familiar to a generation of speech therapists, which went public in 2010 and later hit hard financial trouble.

The Swedish half of the story starts in 2001, when Tobii AB was founded and went on to release an early eye-controlled computer in 2005. In 2014 Tobii acquired DynaVox, joining a mature eye-tracking sensor business to a mature communication-device business. The combined operation was spun back out and listed on Nasdaq Stockholm in December 2021. In mid-2024 the listed parent was renamed Dynavox Group AB, trading under the ticker DYVOX, while Tobii Dynavox continues as the operating brand.

For full-year 2024 the group reported revenue of about SEK 1,972 million - roughly USD 190 million - up 22% year on year, at a gross margin near 69%.
