Susan Macke's career begins with a useful contradiction. She is known publicly as a marketing strategist, a former CMO, an adviser to CMOs, and a digital transformation executive. Yet her first professional language was code. At IBM, she spent eleven years in software development, leading work on operating systems and embedded software for personal computers. At Motorola, she led software and electrical engineering teams building wireless data devices. Long before she was asking where a company should grow, she was learning what it takes to make a complicated thing work.
That distinction matters because the shape of Macke's career is less a climb up one ladder than a steady widening of the frame. The software had to work. Then the device had to work. Then the device needed a place in a portfolio, a customer, a route to market, and a story that could travel across countries. Each move added a new question without discarding the old ones.
Her public record stretches across several generations of business technology: IBM personal-computer software, Motorola wireless data, Sendo smartphones, Nokia enterprise mobility, HP handhelds, IGT gaming systems, Neopost communications, Lexmark print and process management, Forrester research, and Genpact's digital operations. The phone was a small computer before the world agreed
At Motorola in the 1990s, Macke worked near the engineering edge of mobile data. A conference paper from that period describes an industry-academic partnership around software process improvement and identifies her as a manager leading decoder and software engineering teams. The detail feels almost archaeological now. Its importance is that she learned management inside the constraints of development: specifications, handoffs, quality, deadlines, and the stubborn difference between an idea and a shipped product.
She then moved closer to the market. At Sendo, a British handset maker, she led the Smartphone Business Unit when the category was still being negotiated between Microsoft Smartphone and Symbian Series 60. Nokia followed, with roles spanning EMEA sales and marketing, portfolio management, product marketing, and strategic marketing. At HP, she took responsibility for worldwide innovation and marketing in the handheld business, including design, business development, communications, and operations.
In 2008, Macke said many people would make their first internet connection through a mobile phone. It was a practical forecast from someone watching computing shrink into the hand. It also captures the kind of bridge she had learned to build. A device specification becomes a human behavior. A technical shift becomes a distribution question. A product plan becomes a bet about how people will live.

The smartphone era gave Macke a compressed education in ecosystems. No handset succeeded through hardware alone. Operating systems, carriers, applications, enterprise buyers, consumers, and regional channels all had to cooperate. That experience would later reappear in her strategy work: a company can have sharp specialists and still fail when the choices connecting them remain fuzzy.
A CMO who had already lived inside the product
International Game Technology named Macke chief marketing officer in 2010. The appointment carried her from handheld computing into casino technology, but the mandate was familiar: customer-focused strategy, brand development, communications, and partnerships. A year later she moved to Neopost, now Quadient, to lead strategy and marketing. By 2013, she had joined Lexmark, where her remit covered a portfolio of hardware, software, solutions, and services for enterprise customers.
At Lexmark, the title expanded from global product marketing to global marketing and sales enablement. The sequence is telling. Portfolio work decides what a company will offer. Enablement asks whether the commercial organization can explain, sell, and deliver it. Strategy becomes visible in the quality of those connections.
Her work outside the formal job chart carried the same pattern into other settings. Macke helped Lexington Catholic High School create a five-year integrated strategic plan, an execution process, and monthly dashboards. The result led to a wider assignment: a comprehensive plan balancing the goals of 12 schools and 3,300 students. At Lexmark, she also helped form a group that made Quilts of Valor for US veterans and served as an executive sponsor for veterans and women's initiatives.
Define a shared destination, give it an execution rhythm, and make progress visible. The setting can be a global company or a network of schools. The operating problem is recognizably similar.
Those details offer a more human view of Macke's management style than another title could. Her public work favors structure, but not structure for its own sake. A dashboard is useful when it helps a community coordinate. A specialist group is useful when it teaches the larger organization. A plan is useful when people can see their part in it.
The strategist becomes the analyst
In 2018, Macke crossed from corporate operator to research adviser at SiriusDecisions, which Forrester acquired the following year. She studied the questions she had spent decades living: How should marketing contribute to business strategy? How do product, sales, and marketing agree on a destination? When does a center of excellence help, and when does it turn into another silo?
Her Marketing Strategy Compass placed business choices before the annual marketing plan. At the first level, leaders agree where long-term growth will come from and how it will be reached. That shared destination informs decisions about customers and markets, internal capabilities, and investments. Only then does strategy cascade into portfolio, field, demand, and other marketing functions.
The useful feature is the order. Marketing does not begin with a channel calendar and work backward toward a rationale. It begins with the same business context that should govern product and sales. This makes alignment less about harmony and more about shared decisions. Teams can disagree vigorously and still leave with one destination.
Macke's advice to CMOs was equally direct. A seat at the strategy table is earned by improving the decision. She pointed to market insights, market opportunities, competitive intelligence, brand health, and customer needs as evidence marketing can contribute. In one analysis, CMOs providing at least three kinds of data were 59 percent more likely to be involved in defining corporate strategy.

Build the special team. Then teach everyone.
Macke's writing on centers of excellence contains another practical idea. A center gathers scarce expertise, tests methods, improves processes, and provides a consultative service to the organization. But it should not become a permanent island. Once its capability is rooted across the business, it may become a normal function or dissolve into a new operating model.
This is an unusually unsentimental way to think about organizational design. The team is not the outcome. The capability is. A demand center succeeds when better demand generation no longer depends on scattered individual efforts. An innovation center succeeds when experimentation becomes a repeatable habit elsewhere. Leaders should be willing to redesign the container once the learning has traveled.
The point fits Macke's own career. She did not abandon engineering when she entered marketing. She carried its habits forward: define the problem, understand the system, test the process, measure what changes. Marketing added the customer and market. Executive work added allocation and alignment. Research gave those practices names other leaders could use.
The latest technology cycle, with familiar questions
Macke joined Genpact in 2022. Public descriptions of her work have spanned digital transformation and Sales and Commercial. Her recent activity centers on customer experience, data-led decisions, AI-powered sales analytics, and generative AI in sales and marketing. An October 2023 executive discussion placed her alongside Genpact and AI leaders to examine use cases, implementation barriers, prioritization, and the places where human judgment remains necessary.
The vocabulary has changed since IBM operating systems and Nokia smartphones. The organizational questions have not. Where should a new technology enter the workflow? Which outcome makes the experiment worth doing? What data is ready? What risk is acceptable? Who owns the change after the pilot? Which human relationships become more important when the tools look similar?
Macke's career does not supply a slogan for those questions. It supplies a method. Get close enough to the technology to understand what it can do. Get close enough to customers to understand what matters. Bring evidence to the decision. Align the functions around a shared destination. Then build the operating capability that turns the choice into work.
There is a career lesson inside the method. Reinvention does not require discarding the chapters that came before. Macke moved from software to engineering management, from devices to portfolios, from marketing leadership to executive advice, and from research to transformation. Each transition widened her field of view while keeping the earlier tools available.
The machine room and the strategy table can look far apart on an organization chart. Macke's path joins them through a long chain of translations. Code becomes a device. The device enters a market. The market changes the portfolio. The portfolio requires coordinated sales and marketing. The strategy has to survive contact with operations. The work, at every step, is helping people make a complex system legible enough to move together.
