Surtr Wants to Be the Operating System for Drone Defense

Two engineers who shipped combat autonomy at Shield AI looked at a battlefield full of sensors that don't talk to each other. Their answer wasn't more hardware. It was software.

A cheap quadcopter you could buy online can now destroy a vehicle that costs several million dollars. That single fact has reordered how militaries think about the sky, and it has created a strange kind of clutter. Armies have bought radars, radio-frequency detectors, cameras, and acoustic arrays by the crate. They have bought jammers, nets, and guns to knock drones down. What almost none of it does is work together.

Surtr Defense Systems, a Y Combinator Spring 2026 startup based in San Francisco, is built around that gap. Its product, ParallaxOS, is pitched as a hardware-agnostic operating system for drone defense. In plain terms: take whatever sensors and weapons an operator already owns, plug them in, and get one screen instead of ten.

The company's own description of the product is dense but worth reading slowly - it fuses "sensor data that turns any mix of sensors into one decision-grade picture, and that picture into human-authorized fire control for any effector." Strip out the jargon and you get three verbs: detect, decide, and - only with a person's approval - defeat.

Brave1, Ukraine's government defense-tech cluster, found the founders online and invited them to test through its "Test in Ukraine" program. Surtr's bet is that the durable value in drone defense is software, not another piece of proprietary hardware. Its customers - military operators and government defense organizations - already own the sensors and effectors. Selling them a competing sensor means fighting for a slot they have filled. That framing has a name in consumer tech: be the Android, not the walled garden. ParallaxOS is designed to run on an edge compute unit and stay compatible with the command-and-control platforms operators already field.
